best source / ALTERNATIVE vr chains, guides, tensioners
herisites replied to H8RRA's topic in Suppliers Forum
America! I got my new chains/tensioners/guides through Kev (cheesewire) from the states for £100 8) I think THESE are the ones people go for, much cheapness and they have the upgraded plastic tensioner which doesnt wear out. -

Urgent advice needed (petrol filled into a diesel car)
herisites replied to DEL VR6's topic in General Car Chat
Yep, petrol in a diesel car is BAD but you can get away with a bit of diesel in a petrol car. -
I am indeed after the RSs mate and i cannot think of anything else id be happy putting on the car... Well in that case it will look stunning 8) the sooner you get them the better as cant wait to see your car rolling on some nice shiny RS's :D
-
Agreed that some new wheels will set your car off nicely Michael, its beautiful as it is but like you say it just needs that something and i think wheels are the way to go! Are you still after RS's?
-
Car's looking fantastic Dave, good effort!!

Cheers Kev! Yeah im thinking the tapping will sort itself out, just needs all bedding in again! I will change it all back to standard fuelling and try to flog the storm reg, maybe even back to them as its w*nk! As for my MAF, i originally had all the flexi but this time i have just put it straight off the elbow from the charger as didnt you say that mine is the latest MAF which doesn't need to be at a specific angle? If thats not the case then the schitt running may be partly down to that as well. Anyway i shall perservere with it and wait for you to get back from your flashy holiday, alright for some

If you only have a 'few hundred quid' to spend and not planning on doing the work yourself you wont get it done as its all labour especially if you have any troublesome bolts! I helped do Mic_VR's bushes few weeks back, took us about 8-10 hours all in to do all front bushes. We replaced the whole wishbones, ball joints, drop links and arb bushes but we had to hacksaw and drill a wishbone bolt, the ball joints were a pain, the arb bushes took ages! So its all labour. We still need to do the rear axle bushes and thats an axle off job so you could potentially run into more problems, but it can be done with the axle on the car which is how we are doing it. As said GSF stuff isn't supposed to be that great. I was on a bit of a budget with mine so i used some gsf parts but only the small parts like drop links, track rod ends etc, the wishbones and any bearings i have done have all been VW, as will my axle bushes when i come to do them!

Yeah i know the feeling :(

Started it for the first time in 4 months after rebuilding the engine :D

Im planning on doing a very similar trip with mine in the summer with my mate, me in my rado and him in his 350Z and using CV radios to stay in touch. Not sure which way round we are going but basically we will be covering mainly germany visiting Karmann and Wolfsburg etc, down to Switzerland (through the Davos to Stelvio pass road ofcourse ), maybe in to Austria not sure yet, into Italy to Modena to visit the lambo museum, up into southern France Monaco etc and back up. But we might go the other way round and drive down to Monaco first then down to Italy and up into Switzerland etc. We worked out it will be around 3000 miles  but should be fcuking awesome cant wait! My mate has driven through france and down to portugal before so he knows which roads are expensive etc so i will just be following him mainly as well as have sat nav. Cant wait!! :D

Ok maybe a tad off with £1600 but not by alot as fitting the supercharger is simple, it just bolts on to the side of your engine and runs off the pullies, if you go rotrex you dont need to tap into the sump etc as they have their own oil supply and Storm sell a ready to go custom fuel pressure regulator that you can fit and use with a charger up to about 8 psi (knocking on 280bhp) that requires no ecu mapping. So not entirely impossible but i suppose you would need some knowledge of how a spanner works, although i started without a clue and now im pretty useful with a spanner and its all down to help from the forum!

SHE'S ALIVE!!! Put it all completely back together yesterday and today i filled her up with oil/water/fuel etc and double checked everything then fired her up for the first time since about October! Man it was a good feeling hearing her fire up :D The battery is fcuked so need a new one (most likely get a diesel one!) but once jump leads were connected up to my mates 350Z she started on the button. Only issues is its still running like a bag of w*nk but thats because i have just connected it back up as it was before as waiting for Kev to come back and set the charger up properly so at the minute its still massively overfuelling at idle but thats not a problem. But once it got warmed up, i turned it off and started her up again and she's now developed quite a loud tapping noise which isn't as fast as the engine revolutions, more like 3-4 taps per second so im thinking maybe a tappet not getting oil to it?? Anyway it doesnt matter for now, i have tucked her back up again in the garage and will wait for the expert that is Kev to come and help! But still grinning like a cheshire cat from it starting :D :D :D

That's typical behaviour of a dead cam sensor. My thoughts exactly. Im sure i have heard this before, a vr has healthy power one day then next its down on power by quite a bit (would be by quite a bit with the mods it has) and it nearly always turns out to be the cam sensor. Either way i think they are low figures so something isn't right, my vr got 203bhp and 196lb/ft standard with, at the time, 130k! Its a bit more now mind  I think you need to get it on VAG-COM (diagnostics) and check its not something like cam sensor etc. And with regards to shrick manifold and cams, imho i would just save a bit more and get a supercharger if you want proper power figures! As mentioned you will get the manifold and cams for about £1,200 2nd hand and probably get 220-230bhp max most likely whereas you could probably get a 2nd hand Vortech charger ready to bolt on for around £1600 and get 300bhp  would be charger for me every day of the week.

Looks fantastic Karl mate good work! Was very impressed with the brakes when i saw them last weekend, just hope they fit under your new LM reps
-
Have you used the search? Most likely been covered loads of times and you will no doubt find something helpful. Lambda seems logical. Best bet is to find someone with VAG-COM and get it scanned.
-
I personally dont see the point in shrick inlet and cams myself to gain a bit of power for quite a large wedge of money when you can just spend a bit more and get a supercharger setup 2nd hand, bolt it on and away you go. Jon mentioned mine didnt go to plan, thats true but i went rotrex which isn't a well known charger and the problems i had were only simple anyway. I have only been rebuilding my engine because i havent been using it all winter and thought i might as well whilst its off the road. When i put the charger on (at 140k!) the engine was fine and didnt go bang, although it would just be on borrowed time as my chain tensioners turned out to be fooked! But mine was high miles anyway so if you havent done as many miles you should be ok just bolting a vortech on or even a rotrex as there is enough information on them about now.
-
Yep maybe a good idea to start budgetting for them!
-
For the hassle of fashioning up a press i would just take the hub down to a garage and they will press out the old and press in the new, might only charge about a tenner to do it and you know they are pressed in straight/properly.

As promised here are a couple of pics of what they call a well and truly fcuked upper chain tensioner from a VR6. As you can see from the pics the top of it has just been eaten so much the rivets have fell apart and its actually split! My engine was on 142k when we took it apart and i had never heard the slightest rattle from the engine and it always ran very smoothly and it ran good figures for standard so dont think you have to hear your chains rattling before they are nackered! To inspect your upper tensioner as said you just need to remove the rocker cover. Its not that difficult to do, just remove your plug leads and engine cover plastics, then basically undo all the big bolts holding the inlet manifold onto the injector rail/head. The throttle body/ISV etc all come off with it in one, you just need to remove any wiring plugs that connect up etc. Then once the inet manifold is off you can remove the rocker cover to inspect the top tensioner (NOTE: Don't move the cams around etc when you have the rocker cover off!). It may be a good idea to renew the rocker cover gasket whilst you do this as its only about a tenner from VW and they can leak. Also a good opportunity to give it all a good clean as well. Hope this helps! Rob. (Mods, might be a good idea adding to the thread title that there is an example pic of the tensioner to help with the search?)
-
You will be able to inspect the top tensioner with just the rocker cover off. I will get a picture of how mine looked to give people an idea of what to look out for!
