  1. Arse, I filled it with synta silver... and It'll take me ages to do that kind of milage, I'm starting a new job in two weeks and get a company car.. I suppose I'll have to drop the synta out and put mineral oil in and just use my car for some work driving...
  2. Finally finished my VR6 re-build. Was just wondering how I should run it in, ie: stick below a certian rev limit, for how many miles etc, how soon should I change the oil? Its supercharged if that makes any odds. Thanks.
  3. YESSSSSS!!! Finally all done, and sounding sweet, well I think it is, I cant really hear much over the s/c. Had a leak or two to sort and need to remember where a couple of bits go - brackets and wires, nothing cruicial, but no more smoke! Taken it out for a quick spin, made me remember why I bought it, feels so good, been three months since I drove it last!! Didnt really get into the rev range at all - taking it steady and it felt so fast compared to the 106 - not difficult, running feels quicker than that :lol: Just need to sort insurance and tax now :(
  4. Thanks Karl, mk2 16v plugs it is then. No didnt find chain tensioner so going to the stealers today to pick one up, should be firing her up tonight! :D At long last.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; "buy cheap, buy twice" I know this has been covered before, but what spark plug shall I use on my stg 2 V9 set up, I was running iridium (sp) plugs, but have been told Mk3 Golf 16v plugs are good for the job, but I'm sure I read on here a while back that someone said Mk2 Golf 16v plugs are the ones?? I just had a quick look on GSF's website, the MK2 and Mk3 16v plugs have a different part no, but the mk3 16v is the same as the 2.8vr6 part number (not getting them from GSF, just using it for an idea). I dont have the luxury of ordering off the interweb as I need them for the morning. can someone shed some light please. Cheers.
  6. There should be a very small notch in the crank pulley.

The power leeched from running a supercharger is almost purely mechanical, the pulleys are made of ally and are very light and belts weigh sod all, as for the internals being cast or machined from lighter materials, that could help matters but its the internal frictions which are fairly high. Holding a supercharger in your hands if you turned the pulley you would feel quite a resistance, as soon as you stop turning the pulley the impellor blades will stop moving. With a turbo you can very easily spin the impellors using your finger and they'll carry on spinning. Not clued up on 4WD. :(
  8. I finally managed to get all the pistons in on wednesday night then got the new oil pump and sump bolted on. Everything nice and clean. got stuck in today, had some welcome help from my brother to speed things up, was doing well even with a long liquid lunch down the pub :lol: Hit a bit of a snag, my chain tensioner has done a disapearing act..... really pi$$ed off, would have been running tonight otherwise, now its going to be next week :( Still not much left to do now. Off to the pub again now :D
  9. I used to get the creaking noise, but when I did my clutch I replaced the release fork and slave cylinder and now its silent, I'd go with the release fork being the problem.
  10. Thanks for the replies. Now I can get the pistons in, I can finish it pretty quickly and get it on the road, but I'm going to have to leave it untill next week, got too much on this week. :( I really cannot wait for a blast, been way too long.

I have been very busy (worked 3 weekends in a row) and a bit lazy so this re-build is taking longer than planned, not been too bothered up untill today, but now I'm having some serious withdrawal feelings, been two months since it was on the road, and my works transit connect and girlfriends pug 106 just are not doing anything for me. :lol: Little bit of progress this evening, had a go with the proper VW tool for fitting pistons back into the block with, works a treat, its really not worth messing around with grinding a standard spring compressor or struggling at all. It cost £18 inc vat from the stealers, well worth it. Most annyoing thing now is that the raddo is blocked in my parents garage as they are having a new roof put on and the scaffold has covered the drive! :(
  12. I had a quick go this evening with the tool, been too busy to have a go before. Works a dream, to anyone who thinks they may do a set of rings on a VR, dont mess around with grinding a standard piston spring compressor base to an angle or struggling, just buy this tool. Or PM me if your too tight to shell out the £18 and I'll lend it to you. Pic's for those interested:

  14. I'm picking one up in the morning, I have read on VWvortex that people have used them on 2.9's. Looking at a photo of one its a plastic tool which looks like it'll give fine. I'll make it work! :lol:
  15. Yes I'm re-using old pistons, cleaned the lands with an old ring snapped in half, they are spot-less, the new rings fit in nicely. I tried to order the tool from VW but they seemed to think I was talking Greek. I have just rang them again, so hopefully I'll have some luck this time, bloke didnt know how to order one.... he's ringing me back. I dont see how it can be done with a standard ring compressor with out modding it, unless its well used and worn and can be contorted into shape, I'll happily buy the correct tool if I can. Thanks for the info Crasher, basically the same as my Bentley manual reads, helpful all the same though. :D

  17. I'm doing a rebuild on my VR6 at the moment, everything is all clean or new and ready to go back together, I went to put the first piston back in earlier and hit a problem. The face of block is flat but the bores are at an angle so as I went to tap in the the piston the ring compressor rests on the front of the block as it should but is raised on the other side, so as the piston is tapped through the ring compressor one side of the ring enters the block ok but the other side pops out.... A quick search on the tinternet brought up a thread on the Vortex forum, somone said you cant do it with standard piston ring compressor and you need an angled one. I've tried a few local motor factors, tool shops and no-one knows what I'm on about. Can anyone shed some light please.... Thanks.
  18. Welcome aboard mate, you've already posted on my oil pump thread, was literally on the phone to the stealers a second ago. I noticed in your sig you are interested in thermodynamics, well thats good news for me, I've already done some but am expecting to be covering some more over the next year, so I know where to come for help now... :D

  21. Sounds like you had a right time of it with the brakes! Good work with the 1.8t temp sensor, do you think it would be a worthwhile upgrade for mine, running standard management?
  22. No point being a fanny about these things!! :lol: More boost is the plan, although I've never really experienced the true performance of this set up due to the map not being spot on. Few updates, bad news today found a couple of cracks in my oil pump and also plate on the pick up is stoved in, guessing someone drove over a boulder at some point - I know the car had a new sump on it when I bought it.. All the bores are now honed out, pistons cleaned, ready to bolt up, will try to finish this week in the evenings, but I'm in real hurry, but its now a month since I have driven it!!   23. I'm doing an engine rebuild at the moment, I was inspecting my oil pump today and noticed two cracks in the casting, also it looks as though the plate on the pick up is stoved in. I guess this has to be replaced really... (I've posted a wanted ad up if anyone has one)
