  1. An E reg Mk2 Golf 1.8 GL 5-door 4+E in Champagne Gold, no less - E891 YHR IIRC...yes I am sad!! :D ) Bought it with 87K on the clock having paid 2.5K for it from a trader in Bristol. Did an honest 40K in it. It was a little ropey when I bought it - had been quite neglected - but was in great condition when I sold it. The brown velour interior was ace  . I had an accident in Brussels in it when I slid into the back of this Peugeot 205....completely totalled the Pug - bent the bonnet and front wings of the Golf but was quickly and properly repaired - brilliant!! The next owner got a complete bargain when I sold it for only £400. What it lacked i brakes, it made up for in character. I always regret selling it!
  2. Good to meet you on Sunday, James. Seems you are picking up the right advice here. A couple of things: 1. If you go for a Magnex, you'll be alright. Same goes for KW, or (imo) Koni coilovers. 2. Drilling you airbox will be noisy. Depending on how much you drill it, it can be louder than any induction kit, so decide what you really want. A panel filter in a standard airbox might be the answer. Or buy a K&N induction kit and fit the cone down in the front bumper, in place of the carbon canister. This will give the gains associated with an induction kit but whilst keeping the noise down. Having said all this though, I've not yet come across anyone who doesn't like the induction roar of a VR6...that gutteral sound as it builds up from low revs under big engine load...absolutely fabulous. I've lost that with the 'charger, and I really miss it!!
  3. Nice pics there Stormchargedvr6. Interesting to see that you are still running the Shrek, but how does your pipework run? Surely the pipework from charger to chargecooler and back to TB is really long so you are losing a fair amount of psi. Wouldn't short runner be better in order to cut down on boost lost, just like on Kev's and Dave's cars?
  4. Hmm. Just read a good chunk of an old thread about enlarged throttle bodies. That is one diference between my car and Nickvr6's. Might help explain his 10 bhp and 10 ftlb advantage over my engine. Just as thought. Thing is, I suppose I'll need a remap if i go and fit one of those now, being mafless. :? Probably not worth it at the mo'.
  5. Kev, thanks for the tidy-up on here. Tbh I had never got around to reading the whole thread as it was just too long, so this is a great, pared down, what you need to know guide. A couple of questions re my 'charger install: 1. Firstly, I was slightly disappointed to be only seeing 276 bhp and 246 lb ft with my recently fitted Stg 2 kit. Now it could be down to the fact that the engine has only done 2500 since a complete Stealth rebuild, so may yet free up a bit. It this likely? 2. I am still playing around trying to get the Aquamist to kick in. The DDS3 appears to be working fine, but I still have managed to trigger the sensor into life to get the WI working. I have unwound that flathead screw 1 whole turn now, and still nothing. Anything else to try before I give Vince a call, or shall I continue to persevere with the screw, and carry on unwinding? TYIA :D
  6. I would have thought the Red stuff pads are recommended for the R32 because a) it is a fast car b) it is a heavy fast car... I reckon you will be fine with Green Stuff pads. That is all I am going to use, with 288 Black Diamond discs. :D
  7. Your post makes it sound as though you have either done your homework or that youa re a discerning owner, which is excellent. Either way, you are suggesting some quality kit. My thoughts: If you can afford it, I would always go coilovers. It seems your budget will stretch to a decent set. Manufacturers, after extensive testing, have matched springs and dampers to give the optimum balance between comfort and ride height. Also, a decent set of coilovers will allow you to adjust that ride height to your requirements. I have recently been in a very well set up C with KW coilovers and I have to say it rode so much better even though it was lower than mine, which only has the Koni TA / Eibach spring combo. Might I suggest you consider Koni coilovers or KW Coilovers. Owners of FK equipped cars on here have given some mixed reviews of FKs. Suffice it to say, coilovers will be my next purchase. As Karl says, the wheels will be fine. They should look great once the ride height is sorted. Re exhausts, Magnex will be louder than the others. Supersprint is not made of stainless steel, like the others, but is a quality item and is not too loud, I believe. The Jetex is also a good system, and sounds nice, but not too loud. I believe all of them are a good fit on the car. Despite having one, I would recommend not going for Milltek as they are loud like Magnex and also not a great fit. HTH Charlie
  8. Brilliant, just brilliant.  An ace advert too. Well done to Skoda. The car doesn't look too bad either.
  9. Only my opinion Michael, but I'm just not convinced about a debadged grill on your car. Granted, they are normally not colour-coded, but I've never liked them. I only hope you are happy with it. Will still be pleased to see the results though. And the rest of the car is absolutely cracking!! :)
  10. Just my twopence worth, but I really don't think you should be too worried about this heat dissiption issue. You've really got to drive it like you stole it all the time, or do some serious track use to get calipers so hot that you damage them. The roads in this country seldom allow the former, and if you are into the latter, then I suggest you fit a proper brake set up like Brembo, Tarox or AP Racing anyway. I have just painted a set of 288s in Hammerite smooth silver and intend to fit them soon. Even with a 'charger fitted, I won't be doing them any damage. I certainly haven't damaged my standard 280 calipers yet. They are still a clean and shiny gold colour, and to contradict someone else here, haven't discoloured - through either heat or brake dust, despite using very dirty Pagid FR pads.
  11. Yeah, I ended using Road Angel to check what speed I was doing! :D
  12. Not much help probably mate, but exactly the same thing has happened to me. The lights on my dash have gone out, after Tekara and I had a go at fitting my SWG vent gauge pod at the weekend. Only noticed it driving home in the dark last night. Not too amused tbh. Still, I reckon we must have disturbed a wire when messing around feeding the gauge wire down through part of the heater/blower pipework, and around the area of the headlight switch and dials. I will have a look when I get a chance (and it stops raining). Poss dislodged a wire into the back of the headlight switch (?) I will also check the relays and fuse board. If I find the culprit, I'll let you know.
  13. No Michael, I'll have to wait until next week and take it to the local garage. We just couldn't undo the blessed nut ourselves. It seemed we aere starting to round it off, which is bad karma, so we stopped!! :( Nevermind. Are you going to the Bristol meet tomorrow? Loving your car in the new avatar. Looking properly mean and low on that suspension. :D
  14. Nice work, gotta ask where did you get hold of the heat wrap (i've seen a few different manufacturer's / types outs there) as i've managed to get hold of one of those Raceland's too and need to do the same to mine before it goes on! Also roughly how much (metreage) did you need to wrap it fully. cheers Alex Alex I used Thermo-Tec heat wrap, which I think I paid about £50 for, off the 'Bay. The size was 2 inches wide by 50 ft (15m long). It was only just enough and I had to plan how much to use for each bit to make sure I was going to have enough. I wrapped the headers first, then the centre section, then the bottom. I wrapped each section from bottom up, so that, for instance, the centre wrap overlapped the bottom of the wrap on the headers. To save you the trouble here are the approx lengths I used for each section: headers (x6) 5.5 ft centre section (6 into 2 section) (x2) 5 ft bottom (2 into 1 section) 7 ft (total = 50 ft) The other thing I did was use a spray bottle filled with water to soak the wrap as i put it on the manifold. This way it becomes a bit more pliable and slightly stretchy and sticks a little better top the manifold surface. I used a total of 20 snap staps to fix the wrap in place. Around the centre and bottom sections, I had to join 2 together, which is not a problem, but I did use all 20 I had, so again, plan where you put them. I reckon the whole thing took me about 4 hrs while I watched the telly. Oh, and you'll get covered in tiny flecks of (in my case) copper-coloured metal fillings that come off the wrap. I have ordered some heat-resistant fixing spray to coat the wrap in, to 'fix' the whole thing, before I have it fitted. That should arrive early next week. Good luck with yours, mate. :D
  15. Well, had a reasonably productive day today. Ross (Tekara) came over and we had a crack at fitting the 288s, which I've been sorting out. Unfortunately, an overly tight brake hose connection put paid to that. :( Thanks must also go to Nickvr6 for helping me out at very short notice with a set of 288 discs :thumb right: , although as it turns out, all to no avail. I'll have to take the car to the local specialist and get a proper brake spanner on it. Still we made the most of the time, and sorted out the fitting of the SWG vent gauge pod and DDS3 gauge. Looks great now. Also, I spent last evening wrapping my Raceland 6-branch manifold, ready to fit it soon. 16. Dave, Well done. Glad you got the leak sorted and it all back together. Looking forward to seeing the you and the car again on Monday. :D
  17. This is a really lovely car. Great colour and I do really love the ZW1's. Proper Corrado wheel porn imo!! I'd love a set... one day maybe :D
  18. I've had my manifold a while and it is still sitting in the box watiting for me to get round to wrapping it. I too have a roll of the Thermo-Tec stuff. Think I got it off the 'Bay. My wrap is copper in colour. Steve @ - What are you using to spray yours with once you've wrapped it? Sounds like a good idea. I read that its recommended to do that.
  19. Michael, You should get a pic up of your shiny new Schrick for us all to oggle at! Good work on the polishing, and all the more satisfying knowing you did it yourself. :D
  20. Right, here are some piccies of the new engine bay. Enjoy! Makes me want to drive it just looking at it!! :D
  21. Right mate, I see what you mean now! :) I am not sure about the MAF, but a piece of Samco or similar to move the filter away from the MAF looks like the ticket.. You may also have to look at supporting it. I think my Ramair came with a support bracket. Behind the headlight should be fine, but if you are prepared to remove the charcoal canister, you could relocate down behind the bumper. You will probably lose some of the lovely induction roar if you do that though....
  22. I can't think what a JR kit looks like. Nevermind. You can use a length of Samco to do the job. When I had my Ramair on, I had a short piece of Samco between the MAF and filter, all held together with jubilee clips. Worked fine. HTH.
  23. Sorry to hear about this mate. Still, follow Karl's advice and you should be able to replace them pretty cheaply. Look forward to seeing the car again at the end of the month.
  24. Steve, I have still got to pick up my printouts from Nickvr6 who has hold of them after I left them up with Vince by accident  . The answer re power is I'm not sure 'til I've seen them, but Nick seemed to think that - with our maps being very similar now - about 290bhp is what I reckon. :D Reminds me: I must get onto Nickvr6 to get the printouts off him!
