Alex, good to hear you are still around and about, matey. Yeah, the Spearco is gonna work just fine. It's a very neat install job. Just got back from hols yesterday and have yet to pick the car back up again, but am reassured all the niggly little bits that needed finishing have been completed by the Phirm. I just need to stick some miles under its wheels now and run the old (new) girl in! ....Then, like Shaun says, we can turn the boost up! :clap: I can't wait to get it on the dyno once its all run in. 'Bay pics to follow soonest..

In all honesty Karl, its no credit to me. I just paid the bill! Its Tim and his band of merry mechanical magicians that deserve the credit. Seriously, The Phirm rock!! They have had two cars featured in PVW this month (Mk2 Golf VR6 and audi TT), both of which are fantastic in the flesh (having seen them at various stages of build over the last few months). ...to follow, James. Like I said, there are some little details left to sort in the 'bay, and I'd be doing The Phirm a diservice to show it looking less than its potential. All in good time. The car is back in for more mapping now whilst we're away for a few days.

Well, I finally got the Corrado back from The Phirm last week, and this is the first opportunity I've had to post up about it. I am delighted with the way the car has turned out. Tim and his guys have done a fantastic job, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Its the attention to the little hidden details that impresses. At no stage have corners been cut or brackets bodged to fit. Everything that needed fabrication has been made beautifully and much of it is not visible without getting under the car. I'm still running it in and will be for a while (max 3000rpm), so no rolling roads or high revving yet. Its also only on a low boost setting (8psi), again to run the turbo in and just allow everything to bed in and settle down. From the first time they started the engine after completing the conversion, there was only one minor oil leak, from the turbo oil return pipe into the sump (for which a custom pipe was fabricated). All it needed was a wipe and a bolt tightening and that was all in the workshop before I left the premises for the first gentle journey home. The 3in exhaust system sounds fantastic with a deep rumble. Its not as intrusive inside the car as I expected to be honest, but its no shy and retiring violet either! There a couple of pics of the car as it is now, below. I have deliberately not put one up of the engine bay yet as the induction pipework is not fully fitted whilst the mapping process continues. The car is going back for fine tuning of the DTA - and to sort the cold start mapping - in the next few days . Once everything is right, I'll stick some photos of it up. Suffice it to say that it already looks pretty good under there, and there is no doubt the car will be a beast once its fully mapped and run in. :D Oh, and a couple of pics of the venerable VR6 Golf that has been getting all the abuse whilst the Corrado has been away..

Good man, James. You definitely will not regret the addition of a rebuilt 'box and a diff to curb all that torque steer. Now you'll just spin up both wheels at the same time! :lol:

Take it to a tyre fitter with laser alignment. They'll know how to adjust it and set it up properly. They'll also tell you if anything is amiss re ball joints etc. £70 well spent, versus £150-£200 for new tyres!

Great car, mate! I had a 1987 325i Auto 5-door in Silver until last Summer. I loved it to bits, and it never let me down (...well ok, just once with a flat battery). I had some bodywork tidied up on it, put it on refurbed 15in BBS cross spokes, kept it as mint as possible for a daily, did 55,000 miles in it over 5 yrs and loved every second :D . It took us to France and Spain twice as well as a trip to Le Mans in 2007 - all without a hitch. I only got rid of it because I fancied a change (and bought the Golf). They have a real cult following now, even though the bulk of them are not worth much, and I love to see good ones driving around. Best of luck with yours.

You could try contacting Bill Brockbank at Badger 5. Look him up on Google - he's based in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. He also posts on the Club GTi forum. He fabricates spacers and brackets and can supply all your braking needs. He's really easy to deal with and definitely knows his onions, as he builds and races his own cars. You may have to send him your caliper so that he can make the bracket up though. I got all my Brembo kit from him. HTH

Its worth pointing out that the R32 brakes are really heavy. They'll slow you down alright - if they'll fit behind your 17in wheels (of course, R32s use 18in wheels) - but you really do increase your unsprung weight by fitting such heavy calipers and discs. If you can stretch to a Brembo set up, which occasionally come up second hand (off a Leon Cupra R ideally), then you'll dramatically improve braking but without any great weight penalty over a 288mm set up. HTH

James, Your car is up for a steal of a price, given its spec. I am paying to have my VRT built and I might have well bought yours for the price its going to cost in the end ... So there you go folks, if you want a VRT, buy this one, 'cos they cost way too much to convert yourself. :D And anyway, if anyone out there is really interested in your car, and is reasonably certain about their job security, there has never been a better time to get a cheap loan!! :wink:

Yeah, I did my tank commander training down there 10 years ago. Its great fun whizzing 'round in a Challenger 2 on the tarmac, at what feels like breakneck speed (but which is only about 30mph) in 60 tonnes of armoured box. In a car, it'll be great too. I hope it dry though, as that concrete surface can be quite slippery when it rains... You'll see but will miss out on the knife edge experience...now that is good fun! :D

I was at The Phirm recently when my 263s were put into the head and the chains out on, having had an 8:1 spacer plate fitted. The effect is slightly more pronounced than you see in that photo of yours. However, because it is out of alignment by less than a tooth on the cam sprockets, it is just something that will be mapped around when its all set up. AFAIK the only way to get around it is to fit low comp/turbo pistons.

Best way to improve the handling without changing suspension

Another big vote for ARBs. I had Eibach ones fitted to mine long before I changed the standard suspension, and they make a tremendous difference, whilst still retaining the nice and comfortable standard ride. Defo uprate them. I would not bother with braces until you have really stiffened the suspension up (ie fitted coilovers and lowered it). I recently enquired at The Phirm about strut braces and it was mentioned to me that fitting a lower front strut brace is more effective than fitting an upper. Note I have no front strut braces fitted currently. HTH. -

Inheriting my dads trusty old Mercedes 200TE. Free as well! Nice, reliable, W124 estate. Can't wait! :) Hey, well done Fay! Glad that nice Jetta is staying around. I'm sure it'll do you proud... Well done on the Mercedes, Jim. My dad had one of those in 300TE estate guise and it was flippin' brilliant. I so regret never chucking him the £1800 he sold it for 3 years ago. It was leggy but mint (he loves his cars too!) and was such a great workhorse :D . I know you'll love it.

I thought I'd take a few quick pics of the Golf this afternoon whilst I had the camera handy, then thought I'd put a couple on here. Its a pretty low mileage autobox Highline and is a really easy car to live with and pootle around in, A/C, mulberry leather etc. I'm fortunate in that I don't have to drive to work either so I can keep it relatively clean too. :D I had the Solitudes refurbed (just powdercoated) and that made a real difference. It was decat'd when I bought it (I have the cat' in the garage), I have debadged the rear and I'm trying to resist the temptation to modify it further...... and failing! :wink: Update on the 'Rado: Its still away atm. I went to see it a couple of weeks ago, and the engine was in pieces - new uprated conrods going in before the head spacer and head go back on and all the other bits. Soooooo looking forward to getting it back! :grin:
