oddly enough, same here. moonroof had completly died, unplugged the switch, plugged it back in and it worked. weird.

yea that loom looks like about 1/3 of the "full" loom youd want to do all the headlights. the loom i made for the passat has 3 relays and 3 fuses- one relay/fuse for each dip beam, and the other ones for both the main beams. my thinking was that i dont very often use the main beams but if that fuse goes then ive still got both dip beams. You could add another relay+fuse to have both the main beams independant tho. i soldered all the connections and raided a mk3 passat that was in the scrappers for a bunch of plugs so i didnt have to cut any of the original wiring :) whack a set of osram silverstars or similar and your sorted, loads brighter+safer. what made it even more fun was fitting a mk4 passat bumper on whioch had extra indicators in, i put clear bulbs in and wired them into the main beam loom which gave me another 44 watts of light on the road :) before the mod i measured 10.1volts accross the bulb, after the mod i measured 11.8volts. That was without the engine running btw.

id also like to know, bit worrying seeing as i have a set in a box in my boot waiting to be fitted . . .

Corrados and wet corners and hedges don't mix!

woh sorry to see that dude glad your ok well slippery out there today, had a couple of "ooooo the steering has gone really light and the car wants to go straight" moments on a few roundabouts today, and that was taking it slowly! -
thats pretty scary tbh, hadnt even considered the rasism issue towards cars with german looking plates (although they must be pretty stupid to not notive its right hand drive? guess it goes hand in hand . . .) maybe im a bit naive about things like that- my best friend is half german half italian- but i honestly hadnt even thought that having a german lookalike plate on the car would lead to threatening gestures or vandalism.
-
mine was backdated when i bought it from the dvla office, and im sure the form said it could be back dated up to 14 days so they must give you 2 weeks before they issue a fine? I know it was a bit naughty tho ;)
-
im sure one day will be fine ;) i had to go for 2 days with no tax back in january as i had just sold the old numberplate and due to the DVLA not updating their database very often they wouldnt issue me a new tax disc as the car didnt exist with its old H plate back on. Sod getting the train to work tho. us guys on forums like these seem to worry so much about stuff like this, making sure the cars booked in 2 weeks early "just in case" and such like, then worrying for a week that their "baby" will fail :( then I hear stories from (mainly) girls at work who realise theyve been driving round in their corsa with no mot for 3 months without getting pulled over lol
-
do you mean just the D at the side on the blue panel or full german font? ive had a VW roundel instead of a GB in the blue panel at the side fora year and never been pulled, passed an mot fine last week too with them on. Mine are UK font tho . . .

are there any pivots or mechanisms to clean and lubricate? just an idea, but if somethings jammed then the motor will stall and draw laods more current till the fuse blows.
-
hahaha funny thread ive got a huge box full of random bits of trim from when i swapped out the interior, might take a few bits to some shows and deposit them in ppls cars, get some heads scratching hehe
-
they look really good those borbets billcor, what tyres you running on them? 215/40's? got a set exactly the same for my passat :)

this man speaks the truth! not only does a prius use battery packs that involve the use of heavy metals and cannot be recycled, the fact it has to be shipped on a hulking great boat which uses a huge amount of fuel oil from japan to great britian means that before youve even driven the car its created more pollution than youre going to save by driving it compared to keeping an older but not quite as clean car on the road. something like a volvo or saab, where all the energy needed to create the car comes from nuclear or hydroelectric power is much more green if you really need a new car. my 17 year old passat isnt going to be seeing the scrap man for a good few years yet, ive got big plans for the old girl :) and one of my excuses is that im being environmentally friendly by re-using all the bits of other passats that havent been so lucky ;)

My Efforts at a Wheel Refurb - pics - Now with Lacquer P2!
Lufbramatt replied to djmac56's topic in Exterior
i would never sand a basecoat surface before i laquered it- and you should generally apply the laquer no more than 2 hours after the basecoat is applied (ie before its cured fully) so it adheres properly. Otherwise you're more likely to get issues with the laquer lifting over time and getting white watermarks behind it. -
that should look great. and you will be happy you went with 215s. what are the wheels? 16x 7.5 Borbet c's :) and theyre going on this: (but it now has mk4 passat GL bumpers which are colour coded black, and its gonna get lowered 40mm on koni TA shocks and PI springs which are in my boot, just need a spare weekend to fit them!)
-
ok i think ill stick with the 215s then. the wheels are et 30 vs et38 for the stock wheels, so combined with the extra width the new wheels will sit about 20mm further out in the arches i think. cheers for your help :)

had a look on the web and mytyres seem to have some good prices on 215/40/16's. toyo proxes for about £49, avon zz3's for £56 and pirelli p-zero neros for £58. Ill probably get the tyres fitted when i get the wheels refurbed, I was going to spray them up myself but might just take them to BJV and let them have the hassle :) would 225's have any rubbing issues if the car is lowered 40mm? one of my mates got a really good deal on a pair of 17" p-zero rossos for £99 with 7mm of tread on them from a garage on ebay so might have a look on there for any deals :) possibly shouldve thought a bit harder about the wheel width but id been looking for a set of C's in 16" for ages and they came up at a good price so i snapped them up.

get some osram silverstars or those mental philips one in and its even better 8) defo best mod on these old volkswagens, prob one of safest too. i had a similar voltage drop on my passat and the headlights were pathetic and yellow- now with the new bulbs theyre bright white like HID's :D
-
to get rid of the dim-dip just unplug the big resisitor thats tucked under the inner wing with 2 yellow wires. feel around underneath the top of the wing for a cylinder about the size of a packet of polos and unplug the wires, sorted :)
-
just got them out cheers :) turns out on mk3 passat ones the spring tab is at the top rather than the side. annoyingly looks like i need to change the bulb holders to mk3 golf ones tho for the smoked repeaters to work :(
-
so whats the best way of getting the old ones out? I had a go on my passat the other day but didnt want to risk breaking the old ones as im not sure if i like the smoked ones yet and might want to put the orange ones back in lol

i recently helped a mate refurb a set of alfa romeo teledials that were kerbed to hell. to rebuild the lip of the rim, we found a bit of a rim that was undamaged, then used the Metalic version of p38 filler to make a "mould" that we could use to reform the edge of the rim. we carefully layed selotape over a good bit of rim, then made a golfball size blob of filler and moulded it round the selotape and let it set, then took it off. then whe we put the metla filler on the rim, we could skim it round with our little mould and it matched the profile of the lip perfectly, very little sanding was needed after :) not sure how durable it will be but hes always mega careful with kerbs so it shouldnt matter too much ;) we then primered up the rim with etch primer and painted+laquered. before: after: on the car: -
yea should be a bit better than the budget "teflon tyres" 185/65/14's that are on it at the mo hehe Runway Enduro 656's got them fitted to pass an mot last year as i knew id be putting bigger wheels on it- proper scary in the wet! although a bit of tail out action in the passat makes the bloke in a merc whos been tailgating you for the last 2 miles back RIGHT off lol so yea i know its not a corrado but this forum seems so much more helpful, friendly and knowledgable than a certain other vw based forum . . .
-
ahh good idea going to 40 profile, bigger selection there. will investigate that plan :) a guy at work whos into tuning up old fords keeps raving about toyo tyres. might give them a whirl. what model are you running?
-
a while back I bought a set of 7.5 x 16 borbet C's off the for sale forum and have just got round to looking at tyres for them. Looking at tyre calculators it seems the best size for these to match up with whats on the thing currently are 215/45/16's but they seem to be few and far between and a bit more expensive than what i wanted. Considering the 7.5" width, are 205 width tyres ok to run? I dont really want it to be stretched too much. What makes and sizes do people run on this size rim? cheers :)

1990 mk3 passat 1.8 GT estate, black, got it for 300 quid with 168K on the clock but had gone through an mot fine the week before and had 6 months tax on it, had a private plate on it which i sold for £350 hehehehe done another 12000 miles in it in 10 months without any problems (touch wood) is great fun to drive and brilliant for carting mates+ their luggage to devon on holiday and gets me to work every day. Hopefully will be getting a 'rado in the summer tho :) and my gf can drive the passat, the old bus is too good to get rid of yet!
