Assumed that this may be the case if mine do turn out to have 28mm & 30mm :( Will look into boxster/S fronts and the APs, although they sound huge! Thanks for the advice, will have to start reading the definitive guide although I have been told in the past that if going down that route to go 312 as 288s aren't really worth it? Would it be similar if I got the ferodo/brembo combo on stock 280s? This is why I'm doing my homework :D Cheers, Nick

Ah! I definitely was having a stupid moment then! Cheers boost, failed to see the "/4" that fla mentioned...d'oh! So can anyone tell me the piston diameter for a VR6 caliper? Or is it 54mm, same as the 288s? I got some porsche 996 4 pot rears I wanted to slap on the front which have yet to arrive (I heard it's a good setup), from what I've read I think the piston sizes are 2x28mm and 2x30mm (will have to check). I'm guessing I only have to take into account 2 of the pistons? (i.e one side) so I've got: 28mm area: 616mm^2 30mm area: 707mm^2 Which gives me 1323mm^2 overall surface area (Am I doing this right, maybe I take into account all 4 pots to give 2646mm^2?) If the 288s have a similar-ish surface area to the 280s, then that's a significant difference! But how does that translate into real world braking? To me it seems worse...Like I said, I'll have to check the porsche piston sizes once they arrive, I could be basing them on a different caliper but it's still interesting to know. Obviously putting rears on the fronts sparks more debate, i.e. balance and whatnot, but I still need to read up about floating vs fixed calipers, weight, clearance etc. Thanks in advance for any input. Nick

Thanks for the reply - that would I guess make sense, so maybe I'm missing out something or asking the wrong question! From trawling the net it appears that: "288mm caliper with 54mm piston has a total area of 2290mm^2" Unless i'm having a stupid moment (and it happens often!), using 54mm as the dia doesn't work with the standard circular area formula. Just wondering how they arrived at 2290mm^2 I guess i'm looking for the above using corrado dims (280 with Xmm piston?)

As per title, Does anyone know the Piston Surface Area of a std VR6? And if possible, the formulae behind it? I think i'm failing in selecting good google keywords! I bought some calipers on a whim and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth putting them on. Cheers, Nick

Unfortunately so...need to pull my finger out! lol :) btw great to see you again over the weekend, and thanks for everything. Next time you're in Croydon give us a shout for a drink! Hi, I believe they are 996 911 4pot rears, basically the same as boxster 968 fronts I hope! ha, just need to find some carrier adapters and get some custom lines made...I See from your sig you have cayennes - did you have to source the same kind of parts and if so...help!! Cheers, Nick

Bought on a whim...now to get the buggers to fit! So for the autumn/winter, I have the following that I've hoarded to fit/sort ready for spring: Wheels (being refurbed as we speak) KW V2s & mounts (fit) Milltek Exhaust (fit - Cheers alex303!) Brakes (fit) Dashboard (;x) It's gonna be a long one!:

A wise choice sir, I am currently looking for a small, cheap-to-insure motor for miss banaan. Unfortunately, being a woman, her only requirement is "Yellow". Saw a yellow 500 and wasn't impressed! Nevertheless, I'll still bear one in mind. Let us know how you get on with it! Nick

From what I remember, the only thing to take care of is the wiring to the window switch - make sure you know how it goes back together.

Excuse the angel eyes! That's my old valver. 16x7.5 ET20 fronts, 16x9 ET15 rears -60mm all round using 205/45 i believe (could have been 205/40) on the rear and 195s on the front. Coilovers were Weitec Hicon GTs which were fine when lowered around 40mm but after that became too harsh for my liking. Probably wouldn't go for 205s again either as I found they looked a bit too extreme! Had the rear arches rolled btw, without that you will scrub like mad! As for the fronts, I think later cars (bulgy bonnet) have slightly wider wings which may help. Hope this helps... Nick

I believe so...they'd better have for the price I paid! But glad to know that you're happy with them :) Cheers!

Ordered KW V2's today...hope I made the right choice! Had Weitec Hicon GT before and found them a bit crashy tbh Nick

Hi Wayne, nice seeing you too - it was a pleasant surprise! Yours looked ace when I saw you again in the evening, I think the brocks work really well and the car is looking a lot tidier overall since the time I'd seen it a few months back. You'll be pleased to know I just ordered some KW V2s - no more 4x4 ride height for me! See you around, Nick PS. The fully polished pic looks great!

Is it easy to cancel insurance mid term (i.e. after the cooling off period)? Curious! And are you going to do your test in the rado? :norty:

So I was after some BBS CH's, which predictably didn't come up with any potential sellers :(. Scouring the net I managed to get something else which took my fancy though. They need a full refurb which Reuben at Tuningwerkes is undertaking for me. I'm giving too much away already so you'll have to see what the result is! BBS RS145 7x16 ET36 and RS146 9x16 ET49 5x130PCD Needed to know of arch clearance so I got 2 scummy part worn 215/40/16s on a front and rear (btw I'm not gonna keep a 215 on the front!!). Rears were fine with 15mm adapter, might even get away with 20mm. Fronts also ran 15mm which was ok. Could even have 205 on the rear but I think that's a bit too extreme ¬_¬. Tyres now off and wheels left at Tuningwerkes. Yes! The car will finally be lowered too! It took 2 burly guys weighing down the rear to check clearance. I am ordering KW V2s this weekend...anyone know what they're like? Bad quality pic, sorry about that. Expecting to put them on in the spring, so it will make a nice winter wallet lightener :)

Not usually a fan of that style merc, but yours actually looks nice! How are you finding driving an auto though? Nick
-
Had something similar, turned out to be some kind of driveshaft weight that had broken loose. Could have been on the drivers side though...sorry not much help! :) Worth a look though
-
Up to you if you can afford the insurance. Factor in running costs though, and be prepared for when things break!

Recently repaired a front end damaged mk3. Door sagged, new hinge and it's fine with a bit of adjustment. Do you have to lift the door at all to get it to shut?
-
Get your engine diagnosed imo...might not be as bad as you think!
