  1. actually, the power steering belt tensioner bolt faces upwards, so if that had worked itself loose and fallen out the whole thing might have swung round and made a clunk noise. But then again, you should have been able to tell that cos the belt would go slack. Ill keep on thinking...
  2. Could be wrong, but a sound like that would normally be something mechanical. I have a couple of PAS racks on the cheap if you need one, hopefully it won't be that major though :salute:
  3. Hmm, sounds like the steering rack itself has thrown a valve out or something. You really need to be under the car to inspect that though.
  4. I guess you can put it anywhere, it just absorbs the heat from whatever it's attached to which then changes the internal resistance. When the resistance falls to zero, the wire obviously earths and the fan comes on. Then when the jobby cools down, the resistance goes up and the fan shuts off.
  5. yeah, look next to the big blue 4Litre square bottle on the right. PAS fluid is in a small mustardy coloured cylinder bottle with a red lid :salute:
  6. YEP just seen this topic, check out the first post.[/quote:2ogwgbrg] Not sure what you're referring to mate
  7. I would be surprised if there were 16vs without it, it's a safety feature which keeps the radiator fan on after the engine is turned off. Obviously the water pump won't still be going so the cooling is limited to just the coolant in the radiator, but it should still be working I would have thought.
  8. The pump runs off one of the pulleys down the left hand side of the engine, might as well do the twist test (belt tension should be sufficient enough do that you can only twist the belt through 90 degrees) on all of them whilst you're there. The fluid reservoir will be a square bottle to the left of the battery on an early car, and a cylindrical bottle wedged in next to the windscreen washer reservoir on a late car.
  9. It's that bolt matey, looks like you don't have one. Maybe someone took it off? When I dig this other one out and test it, I will let you know.
  10. *bookmarks* I need a whole set of tools tbh, my main stuff got robbed out of My jetta over a year ago, which has left me with some set of 1/2" drive sockets 8-19mm, a spattering of spanners and a few random other bits and bobs
  11. c l e a n   keep the updates coming Neil!
  12. Blimey, that IS cheap! CHeers was8v, looks like we're even on the help front :salute:
  13. If you just want to do the pistons and seals it's a really simple job, I did them on CazzaVR's car before he unfortunately had to sell. Could easily write a wiki guide for it if needs be. Got a pair from a scrapper that I need to overhaul sometime.
  14. Try a new Cold Start Valve and Warm Up Reg, although they won't be in use when the engine is warm. Sounds like your engine is a bit tired to be honest, or perhaps some of the sensors are dying?
  15. I guess VAGCAT is wrong then
  16. For those of you who are having issues with working out the right part numbers in VAGCAT, please see these screenshots I just mocked up: This is how some people are reading it. You are correct in presuming that the dark grey lines indicate each item's 'box', but they do not. You need to look at the 'box shading' as follows: This is correct. I'm not sure why it is this way round, but it is  Hope this helps, Jon.
  17. I'll copy and paste that post into the VAGCAT stickied thread :salute:
  18. Part number was checked against a 1991 Corrado and a 1994 Corrado, I doubt they would made the foam a different shape, there seems to be no reason for it.
  19. Yup, same part number for early and late Chris: 323 863 950
  20. My good man, let me demonstrate to you how the odd-listing world of VAGCAT works :salute: Coolrado is completely correct, the part number is above the description, have a look a these screenshots I just mocked up: This is how you were reading it, you are correct in presuming that the dark grey lines indicate each item's 'box', but they do not. You need to look at the 'box shading' as follows: This is correct. Hope this helps, Jon.
  21. Outer CV was posted today, so should be here tomorrow (although hoping not, as I may not be in to sign for it what with the resit and all) or preferably wednesday. Also got the Tax renewal to sort at the end of the month; if things are still looking bleak it will get SORN'd.
  22. Ah cool, glad you found the right fuse. Not sure about the earth lead, but it sounds like it's something which will need replacing either way.
  23. £350k! Wow, that'd do. The new 'wagen was on last night, no road test as of yet though.
  24. If the wire has fried to the point of the insulator sleeve melting then it definitely needs replacing imo.
  25. Looks so fresh mate! I love the Aquas, the blue is such a good colour.
