  1. Buckle yourself in Captain Six-pot! Ok, so we got back up there yesterday around 11am, feeling quite confident. Popped the bonnet and instantly saw the brown 2-pin connector which goes underneath the oulet pipe (the one surrounded with 1-pin connectors?) so stuck that back on. With the help of White2505, plugged all the 1-pin connectors in their right place - half weren't connected or in the wrong place - plus sorted pretty much all the earths I could find. Stuck the new ISV on, but was again frustrated by failure :( as it would only click once... ProdigalSon aka the Emperor of Electricity 8) got to work on the wiring diags from Yan (top class!) We got to continuity checking EVERYTHING. we pulled the ECU connector out and literally checked every pin in turn, and did the same with the ignition module. Everything was perfect... but we did find something out...we worked out that the ISV connector is in line with the connector on the header tank which measures the coolant level and from the diagrams looks like it won't let the car idle AT ALL if the connector isn't working etc. So we jimmied that up with a paperclip (we're real engineers obviously) but still no good. So we traced it back to the fuseboard... Ah ok, there's a relay that controls it.. Now, if I said Relay #42 to you, would at least some of you realise where ALL my idling problems stemmed from? A dodo had more active life in it than this stupid thing. Luckily someone had done the uprated headlight loom on the car, so we took the fullbeam relay and stuck it in. The ISV buzzed! Ok, one problem down. We checked the timing, but the cambelt was fine. We did the TDC trick too (cheers to red raddo owner who told me about that!) but that was fine too, so we moved onto the dizzy. With the help of the Golf Mk2 Haynes (using it for the 16v diagnosis) we realised that at TDC not only was the rotor arm / dizzy pointing at completely the wrong cylinder, but all the leads were wrong too  how we had got it to idle the week before was anyone's guess, but it was dumping fuel like it was illegal so maybe it was a brute force thing? SO... we sort all the leads out, and turn the car over... It purrs up perfectly to 1200rpm...and then dies. Instantly. :( :( :( From my previous KR engine swap, I know K-Jet can be a stubborn little biatch with regards to vacuum readings, and as we had the cam cover off I thought maybe I had disrupted the intake pipes and the vacuum lines underneath. Oh yes. Two vacuum leaks (one fat pipe that goes from the roar pipe to TB down into that over-run valve. That was venting to atmosphere, and the other was one of the fiddly little white vacuum pipes) This is literally last chance saloon. It was getting on for 8pm (after starting ~ 7 hours before) and we needed to go cos starting cars is loud! I leant over, trusting in the throttle switch to sort it's act out, and turn the key. keh-keh-vrrooooooooooooommm-brrrm-brrrm-brrrm-brrrm...    idled at 1100rpm!! After a double high five with the P Sizzy, we cranked the brass TB screw around a bit and left it idling at 1000ish whilst we checked the timing. After that, we hightailed it back down the M6 south to the O-town after enjoying a tank @ 99p per litre! Aaahhhh.... and it's still outside! The paranoia has begun already
  2. I'd whip off the sump nut and let out a pint if I was you, I absent-mindedly overfilled my 1.3 mk2 golf years back, and it got through all the seals etc etc and shot out of the exhaust on WOT at mid range revs. But then I'd put about 2litres too much in. Ahh, what a newb.
  3. j00 kan haz hai fyv? niec!!1111 sleepytimes bro-manian farm lord, I'm gonna hit the sack as if it just called my mother a street-lady. Laters!
  4. So... HUGE thanks to all that helped with getting my 16v running, it is now sat happily on my drive ~100 miles from it's starting place :bounce2:  :turn-l: :lol!: :bday: :new-bday:  :compress: :shaking2: :thumb right: (will elaborate on the eventual problems tomorrow) @Yan, those diagrams were superb. Serious beer tokens for you my friend! Proper update in the morning, me and the Prodigy are only just back and I'm k n a c k e r e d! Jon
  5. White 2505, do you have a 2-pin brown connector that fits on the WUR and CSV but isn't actually connected to anything, or is it connected up to something i have missed?
  6. helps massively thanks so much :D :D :D
  7. i deffo know the green/red isn't connected to anything, maybe that is what is tripping out the engine so much...
  8. Hey dec, are you sure this is the right one, 14mm? I picked one up today but 14mm looks tiny small.
  9. EXTREME UPDATE ATTACK!! So, my new ISV and cold start valve came today plus the WUR i've had all along, so I'm hoping to do the following when I go back up tomorrow: Put petrol in via Mr. Jerry Can, Stick ISV on, Stick CSV on, Stick WUR on (maybe), Check wiring again - continuity tests with Multi-Meter (All - is it worth leaving that LED plugged into the ISV connector and then swapping around all the 1-pin connectors until I find one which gives a continuous 12v+ signal to the ISV connecter, as opposed to the tiny little pulse?) Swap ignition switch with Prodigal's G60 (cheers bro :thumb right: ) Check head to cam timing via TDC measurement through spark plug hole. Compression test using gunson after taking spark plugs out. If anyone can think of anything else please feel free to add it here, as I'm looking for pretty much a ticklist of stuff to do tomorrow. Want to drive it home! :D
  10. Aaaah, thanks. Yes, it was serious
  11. Surely someone is willing to go pop their bonnet and take a few pictures...? I'm going back up tomorrow.... anyone???? Anyone at all? :(
  12. Sounds like someone needed an early night!
  13. halfords today? is that like the express version? I found a 3.5mm allen to adjust the CO, and continued to wait for my ISV and CSV to arrive (tomorrow, fingers crossed!) and placed an order for an engine crane. Oh, and printed out the wiring diags from Yan :D 8)
  14. Ah, the irony of the Landy's licence plate, considering your username!
  15. have you checked the little brass screw on the throttle body? This will adjust the idle speed at any engine temperature.
  16. from mine? No extra pics yet. I remember wirebrushing and regreasing the following though: Ignition coil to cylinder head ribbon strap earth, battery earth just next to washer bottle, earth point next to distributor (on the corner of the head) all of them were very corroded, and probably weren't helping but the same symptoms persisted after this.
  17. Wow, that is hardcore Traverse!  I've deffo lost plenty of time on my VWs in general, so far the Corrado owes me 6hrs and a radiator and I haven't even bought it yet! :?
  18. Cheers zeal, will bear that in mind! So far possible problems are: no petrol (obvious) ISV shot, wiring might need looking at, weak spark - checked earths, could be ignition switch, probably a couple more things i can't remember... Anyone around stafford on saturday, drop me a pm!
  19. my 14mm socket won't fit over a spark plug i don't think... hmm, i guess it's easy enough to find out.. Broooo..... :D :D :D :D :D
  20. Well, Being almost wise and taking on what is currently a rado project (are they ever finished, really?) I've been selling stuff that I've been hoarding over the years to fund potential problems with my almost-collected Corrado and also a bit of a slush fund... This is where I admit to being a geek, as I listed pretty much my whole old school playstation games collection on ebay which isn't huge but is worth a bit of cash. At time of writing, I've made ~£300 which has paid for another KR engine on 83k (needs collecting still), a new engine stand and an engine crane. Always wanted one! :new-bday: What have you given up for your love of the C? (Marriages / children / kidneys don't count  )
  21. that thing looks amazing, will deffo pick one of those up. Cheers!
  22. aaah ok gotcha. yeah i remember you have to wiggle the bar around a lot to get it all back out together! will see if i can find one then.
  23. Thanks, Supercharged. What is a locking extension bar? Is it like a ratchet?
