The Monkey's Daily - Mk2 Golf GTi 8v [straight through MOT]

Edit: found out more about the Knock Sensor: Knock Sensor This is basically a microphone that bolts to the block and detects pinking by listening for sounds waves of a specific frequency. When the knock sensor detects pinking the ECU is then able to retard the ignition timing accordingly. The signal is passed from the sensor to the loom via a shielded cable. It is essential that this cable is in excellent condition, if there are any nicks or tears in the cable then the knock sensor should be replaced (£45, VW only part). It is simple to replace and merely plugs into the loom at one end (the plug can be found near the fan and distributor) and bolts onto the block at the other. It must be torqued up to 15ft/lbs, any more or less and it will be under or over sensitive. Thought it was 20lbft, will have to cross check the Haynes and the Mk2 Bentley to see what they say (or Corrado Bentley under G60). Also the sheathing on my KS is really bad, I can see the inner core in a number of places so I'm glad I've got that new one on the way. -

Well I found some info about testing the blue temp sensor: The part number for this sensor is '025 906 041 A' (always check with your Volkswagen dealer for the most updated part number). The resistance of this unit is appriximately 3.2 Kohm at 10 degrees C. If it measures open circuit this will explain erratic idle and throttle speeds especially when the engine is cold...Once the new sensor has been installed, start the engine and disconnect the blue coolant temperature sensor. Rev the engine through 3,000 rpm three times, each time allowing the throttle to close completely. This clears the Digifant ECM fault memory. So I'm going to grab a multimeter and hopefully test it this lunchtime. I'll also do my spare pattern one (not ideal I know) but interesting to see how good it is. At £10 delivered I'm not expecting much. -

Very true! The big big one starts at 40 I think. I generally only use that for wheelnuts these days. The smaller one is my bro's, ProdigalSon, i'll try to find the info. Ah yeah, the big one is 30-150 lbft, the baby is 6-45lbft :) -
as david says, try greasing the slider mech. Don't use copper grease as it's slightly abrasive and can eat through seals. something like LM grease should work fine.

If you want a beater, perhaps a mk3 tdi would be better (and cheaper?) than a mk4. I'm sure companies do short term insurance, even some of the specialist VW people do. Brentacre springs to mind.

I've got the small Halford orange and black one which I think goes down that far. I think it's relatively accurate. Just realised you're in Northants DW! I'm going to be starting my new perm design job in Brackley on Monday :salute: -

Hey now, don't let the missus hear you say that! I'll be sad if I sell it as I'll just hanker after another Mk2 based car and out of the Golf and the Corrado I think we know which is lower maintenance...! Ah of course, thanks buddy. I'll order one and get it on. 20lbft on the bolt! :D ---------- Post added at 03:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:51 PM ---------- found a genuine new knock sensor on Ebay for £27 delivered. Just need to order bolt number N 0102336 from the dealers and I'm all set for some anti-knock fun. -
ba dum tssshhh :D welcome oh VR6.
-
I'd get the MOT place to do it before they test the car. But yeah probs about an hour's labour. Have to disconnect wishbone/steering rack from hub, undo driveshaft, dismantle driveshaft, swap the boots over and redo all the undoing stuff :D
-
^^^^^^
-
The bit about the hub is very true.

track width is measured between the centres of the tyre contact patches so depending on wheel offset and tyre width then I guess it's possible for the track width to change. Or am I talking horlicks?

Lucky number 7 - sold but 911 in its place

It sounds like the thumbs are intake manifold upper and lower and the grass is the gasket then! Glad you found the issue :D -

That makes sense I guess. they do the same with the brake m/c (4 outs iirc) and have a seperate part number for M10 bungs. ---------- Post added at 12:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:36 AM ---------- I'm going to pick up the Golf this lunch as I decided to get the rears fitted with Uniroyal Rainexperts along with the front. A few weeks ago, did a nice rear end shuffle on a roundabout as the fronts gripped and the backs didn't. Seems that I don't even have matched tyres on the back :? one Conti EcoContact and one Cadac with an off-road tread pattern! This is actually the first car I've kept (and driven) long enough to change the tyres on out of almost 20  -

Yeah :? Completely unrelated but my knock sensor is really fraying now. It can't hurt to replace that too (although I think the KS is much more fundamental and when it goes the car runs like áss). I'll grab one of those too. ---------- Post added at 11:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:15 AM ---------- so you have 2 blue temp sensors? Does that mean one is running your coolant guage on the dash david?! -

a loose manifold would cause a huge vacuum leak which would deffo affect the running. Can you get a vid up of the shrieking noise maybe? -
AFAIK, They're still available from VW...? Part number has lots of 0000000000 in!
-
Hi mate, I'm afraid they are gone :( but water pumps are only about £20 from the dealers IIRC. They are for a 4cyl engine anyways. hope this helps! If you do replace your pump, buy a mk2 pulley as it's solid and will last. The C one is clutched and mine broke leaving me 40 miles away from home....the last time I drove the Plum about 3 years ago!

Good points matey. I'm a bit reluctant to fit the new BTS as it's pattern despite believing it was OEM (bought online). I guess a pattern working one is better than a dead genuine one. I'll drop jonny a PM on cgti :D Edit: I was waiting to do the "unplug BTS with a timing light and see if the ignition advance changes" trick to see if it's dead or not, but I think you're right. I should just put it in. I could do it at lunch actually. -

Very good point Ant, it may well have been adjusting for an air leak at the airbox which I have now fixed! One of the little white plastic lines did seem to have some of the rubber L joint wedged inside it so perhaps now it's overfuelling and obviously no lambda to tell the ecu otherwise. Cheers! Thanks Steve, another very good idea! Saves me buying/hiring a gas analyser and a strobe :D -

So, I get the leak fixed, the ignition switch is done and for a while all is well. Now the car's drinking like George Best. I've even had cyclists tell me that it's running seriously rich as they can smell it when stuck in traffic! :/ I'm also a bit concerned as I've read the rubjonny guide on CGTI about tuning a digi 8v, and it seems to mention that unplugging the BTS to check whether the ECU is changing timing for cold/hot running mode is a standard. But also the Bentley states that this should never be done with the car running as it will screw up the ECU. It seems that a screwed up ECU will affect fuel economy so is my poncuter dead? I also hear that bad earths will do this but AFAIK I have done every last one of them. I have never ever had the car stall on me, apart from once when there was a bit of water in the dizzy but it's never happened since. The revs don't even drop off when coming back down to idle from any speed and it generally runs great. Aside from getting a CO analyser, can anyone suggest any way of looking into this? I'm thinking at the very least that I'll get new plugs and leads, dizzy arm and cap, air filter and look for a good coil. At least I know I have a good base to go from. I have a new BTS that i haven't fitted yet, but then it doesn't seem to run that bad when cold. If someone can point me at anything in particular I will appreciate it! -

Also the sensor that controls the rad fan is inside the radiator itself, one of the bottom corners IIRC. -
I think perhaps the browser may resize them and I'm runnig IE6 at work. My res it 1280x1024, and the pics are 3106 x1857 and showing at full scale :/ Probs just this old computer then! Sorry about that :bonk:
