Another thought: The brake or clutch does not get depressed for this to happen, so therefore if the switches were fitted they would be passive anyway. Do you reckon it could be the custom-code chip causing it? My mate reckons it sounds similar to the digilag that mk 2's used to suffer from, but obviously on a DBW car. Any thoughts?

There is also a mobile one near by, mey even be the same place. I'll get details tomorrow. Also, my mate used one in Blackpool, or Preston, for £45 per wheel mate. Where in NW are you?
