this may sound like a silly question but im new to working with engine internals and i want to learn more, when reading about cams etc i understand the idea of increased lift and duration but what difference does a ported and polished head make and what exactly is ment by this? Are there any real gains to be had by porting and polishing over just changing to KR cams in a 9a? Thanks in advance and sorry if it a daft question Rob

Changed thermostat and engine running too cool
timthetinyhorse replied to timthetinyhorse's topic in Engine Bay
mine used to run around the temps you mention but it runs much cooler now, might get a sts from the dealer and see if that opens at a higher temp -
i use mine to hid the current chips and also the scratches that some pikey twat created when they tried to rip it off the other night

Electrics/speedo problems,help please
timthetinyhorse replied to vagingit.co.uk's topic in Engine Bay
mine did this a little while back and i had a play with the headlight switch and they came back on again, still occours now and again but disconecting the battery overnight tends to solve all my electrical woes, first point of call for me would be the bonnet earth strap, i had some problems with crazy engine oil and water temps showing and replacing the earth strap solved ll of these problems :-) sorry i couldnt tell you more but hope this helps you a little rob -
changed the thermostat on my 9a a few weeks back and since then the oil and water rarley get above 80deg, as the stat isnt a dealer part is it possible that it is opening at a lower temp? if so should i get the dealer part and fit that? is running it like this going to cause problems if the oil is not warm enough? cheers rob

ok here is the backgrownd to my worsening problem, a few months back when i was driving home from work with headlights on i lost all power to the gauges, radio, heatercontrols etc intermittantly, this problem carries on for about a week and then vanished never to occour again Last month i had a problem with my oil temp showing 180 and the water sitting over 120 but car was running fine, solved this by changing the bonnet earth strap ad this worked for a few weeks then the problem re occoured but on then driving one night i turned the lights on and the temps went back to normal so since this i have just flicked the lights on then off to reset the problem and thought nothing more of it Today heading to work same temp readings fault occoured, flicked lights on only too loose all power to all gauges and radio, as soon as lights were turned back off everything was back to normal, this happens with either sidelights of headlights on however when side lights are on the blue light for high beam lights up, any healp realy would be appreciated as asmuch as im good with mechanical stuf im scared of car electrics thanks in advance

the belt that drives the PAS pump or the one from the engine? to remove the PAS belt there is a tension bolt on the underside of the PAS pump, you will have to loosen some of the other bolts sometimes to allow the pump to move, if it the belt driven from engine i would presume there will be a tension bolt somewhere on the pump no doubt someone will correct me here though

welcome, iv had a 9A for a while now and my car holds 2k revs for a while on startup and then setles down, as for the temp reading mine usualy shows water temp of about 70-80deg and a oil temp (digital) of around 90deg, it used to run about 90deg water temp but i have changed the thermostat recently and this has caused lower running temps, the other thing you may want to try if you feel the car appears to be running hot (i only noticed this when watching the oil temps) is that the bonnet to body earth strap is in good condition, it sounds mad but i was showing oil temps of 160deg nd water off the scale with warning light flashing, changed the earth strap and it reads great most of the time, now and again it still goes crazy and this is solved by turning the lights on and off...............sounds mad i know but its sorted mine out :) hope some of the dribble iv written there makes some sense to you rob
