Right, the VAG blue temp sender has the VAG stamp & number on the metal part and marked 'ELFA' (I think) & 'Made in Luxemburg' on the plastic case. Replacing it has definately improved running from cold, before it was gutless for first five mins, I was having to slip the clutch to get going! The GSF sensors have no markings. While fitting the blue sensor I also fitted a new 4-pin yellow temp sensor (from GSF), now the rad fan isn't working after switching the engine off, and the temp gauge is reading alot higher than it used to do. Maybe the new sensor is duff, or maybe the GSF ones are not right for the VR6, will post more info when I get to the bottom of it.

I fitted a new 4-pin temp sensor (from GSF, black with yellow band, which they assured me was correct for a '95 VR6) yesterday while I was fitting a VAG blue temp sensor, now my water temp is up to 110 deg. in traffic and the fans don't seem to be coming on at all. I thought it just controlled the aux. water pump and fan run-on, so why would it affect the fan while the engine is running? Wish I'd bought both from VAG now!

Surely you'd need to get a custom map for it to work properly. Your engine might take it but from what I've heard you'll be having the charger rebuilt often

I've noticed that the whine gets quieter after about 5 mins and is non existent after a couple more mins, exactly the same each morning. Not had chance to do a cold start with head under sump yet, but priced up a new oil pump at the stealers - £115 inc. vat. Euro car parts list a genuine one at £105 inc. vat but states AAA eng. code so need to double check that its suitable.

I've just noticed that my VR was filled up with this on its last service - has anyone used it before with good/bad results? I've done a search but found nothing on this oil. My VR has 90K on the clock, should I ditch it and refill with an oil recommended on here? I've not really driven it enough yet to comment on the oil consumption if any! Cheers.

Just found this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NGK-spark-plug-BK ... dZViewItem Best price i've found for BKR5EKUP platinum plugs recently, £6.00 each or £37.94 for a set of 6 inc. delivery. Sparkplugs.co.uk now want £48.65 for a set, some other online sellers want £58 or more!

having one of those weeks! (thinking of selling my vr!)
Andy T replied to randomist's topic in General Car Chat
Don't let the discs get to you - you could buy something newer/more sensible and still have to bigger & more expensive problems than discs. Newer car's can have random electrical nightmares whereas the C is pretty damn reliable in that area because its much simpler. Change the discs yourself it's easy- see the Wiki forum. -
Anyone ?[/quote:1f109] If it was lower geared, which I doubt, It wouldn't make the car quicker. The G60 is pretty low geared so going any lower will make first gear useless and the other gears wont be matched to the torque curve. There's no point changing ratio's unless its a proven mod like Andy665 mentions about VR higher ratio 1st & 2nd gears - usually done to complement an upgrade in power.

Just came on to do the very thing.... 1995 VR6 blue temp sensor is 906 041 A, and costs £9.68 + VAT (I was expecting a lot more!) O-Ring seal to go with it is 903 168 02 , £0.87 + VAT. Altogether they come to £12.40 inc. VAT, not bad. When I pick it up tomorrow, I'll see if it looks any different to the GSF ones.
-
Cheers, thats made my mind up then, I will get one from VAG.
-
Blue sender talks to ECU for fuelling/timing, shouldn't your temp gauge be running off a black temp sender? they are definately different. Did the blue senders all look different or could they of been made by the same company? Flusted, have you got problems with your GSF one? Cheers lads
-
Need to replace this - are the VAG ones better or just the same as the ones from GSF? any differences in longevity? GSF seem to list the same sensor part number for the mk2 8V GTi, G60 & the VR6, is this right? When I've been to GSF in the past for blue temp sensor they never seem 100% if its the right one for your engine, they just say 'oh well it looks the same as your old one so it must be right' !? hmmm.... cheers for any help
-
Hmm think I might buy a spare set of Pagid FR if any GSF's near me have old stock left...
-
Got pagid FR pads (VR6 but same as G60) from GSF last week but had to ask the guy to order them in, he didn't offer! When I picked them up another guy asked if I wanted greenstuff instead, they must be pushing other brands at the moment.

golf/corrado recaro seats are mounted to the subframe by four bolts, i'd imagine all recaro's would use the same mounting system but you'd still need to source recaro golf/corrado subframes, or get someone to professionally fabricate/mount them to standard subframes (alot of people did this with Ford fit Recaro's)
-
Are they definately corrado recaro's? seems strange that someone would take the subframes off them. Are they electric?

Cheers guys. I'll have to get under the car after a cold start and listen again. Worn oil pump sounds preferable to it being something in the head, but its a noise i've never heard on any of the ageing 4 cyl. VW's i've owned. Annoyingly the G60 always sounded fine from cold. The engine doesn't have to be that cold for it to happen either, it will be whining again after only 4 hours stood. It's quite embarassing especially when firing her up for people wanting to know what they sound like  it sounds like a tired electric motor or a food procesor on slow

I've had a listen at the tensioner and I can't hear anything there. Defo seems to be coming from the back of the cylinder head. PAS pump was replaced last year with genuine part and is very quiet when steering. Car is only lowered 30mm and sump is fairly new so oil pump should be ok. I had a VR6 auto for a while last year with the 115k on the clock and that made the same engine whine when cold but slightly louder. Could it be anything to do with the valve train/chains/bearings in the head?

My VR6 engine whines for first five mins after a cold start, its noticeable even inside the car with the windows shut. It is there at all rpm above idle, and is noiser the higer the rpm is. I did a search but the only thing that came back was that it could be the alternator. The noise is coming from the back of the cylinder head area, the alternator is pretty silent. Once the car has warmed up a bit, it goes away. What causes this, is it anything to worry about? cheers

Just for ppl's future reference - I measured how far VR6 front calipers stick out from the disc/hub face today with brand new discs & pads fitted, it was around 32-35mm (whereas on early 4-stud hubs the distance is only about 22-25mm, on which 16" RS's fit on okay) Reckon its going to be very close, I'll have to trial fit them but maybe i'll get away with some very thin spacers.

Fitted a set of Brembo max discs (£70-odd + VAT for the pair) yesterday with Pagid FR pads, loads of initial bite, very quiet and smooth underfoot, they aren't even bedded in yet! They feel so much better than the pagid grooved I took off, they looked ok on the outside but the inside of the disc was worn past the grooves and was all cratered and lumpy, no wonder the brakes were crap. Pics here - http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic. ... 751#568751

It feels/drives completely different to the G60, but then its on a better suspension kit. It's alot smoother to drive whereas the G60's power was very jerky, off-on. There's not as much low down torque as a chipped/pullied G60 so you have to drive it differently, but it makes up for that higher up the rev range, the engine sound at 4000rpm plus is fantastic even with a quiet magnex exhaust! Getting back in the G60 now is like getting into a go-kart, it does feel a bit lighter & more chuckable in tight corners but I prefer the VR overall. All I can say Is go and test drive one!
-
Took off the tired Pagid Grooved front discs and found they were all cratered on the inner pad face  Fitted nice new Brembo Max discs/Pagid FR's and a new caliper, after stripping & painting the carriers & calipers in Silver caliper paint 8) Still up on axle stands but should be finished early tomorrow!

Is anybody in the market for a pair of Electric recaro front seats? They are currently in my G60 which is up for sale - http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?p=569106#569106 I'm thinking of putting standard black cloth seats in to reduce the selling price of the car. They are totally unmarked, no wear on the bolsters/foams, fully working electric tilt & height adjustment, and came from a 1994 Corrado VR6. I'm going to miss them but I can't justify the cost of having them retrimmed in leather to suit my VR6. The Ideal would be a part ex for someone's black cloth front seats in very good condition. Any thoughts on what they would be worth? Cheers.

When its parked near the G60, the RC's look much bigger than Design 90 16's for some reason!
