  1. yes, but I have owned/driven mk2 gti's with lowered suspension in varying degree's, with higher milage than my C, and never come across the steering lock 'clunk' that the C suffers from. With early C's suspension/steering being the same/very similar to that of mk2's, I can't see it being track rod angles, it's surely got to be something unique to the C?
  2. The vr6 has a wider track (not just because of wheel offsets either), won't that be a problem? and are the number of turns 'lock-to-lock' different between models? elsewher its been mentioned that the vr rack requires more pressure from the pump, and that the fittings are different.
  3. 195/45's all round, the rears are 8" so you get a nice slightly stretched look, the pic doesn't do em justice though.
  4. Thanks. When you say heat gun, do you mean the electric type or a blow torch?
  5. Use a hexagon socket bit rather than an allen key, much more secure. I got them undone using that with a 18" breaker bar with a 3/4" square drive. Soaked the bolts overnight with plus gas, need to be careful to support the carrier with a axle stand so that the force is going through the ground, and not bending the hub carrier/suspension.
  6. Err, certain people used to do that in this country, but that was the 80's! Behind with the times again!
  7. Yeah the adjustment screw only takes up the play at the straight ahead position, so winding it too tight can cause it to become tight on full or partial lock and loose the self centering - have to be very careful.
  8. Maintenance on the g60 engine should be cheaper even when taking into account charger rebuilds, there is alot more room in the engine bay and things are simpler, the VR6 will need timing chains replacing which is very expensive, alot of other vr6 jobs also require major dismantling just to get at things due to poor access etc.
  9. The test specs will be the same are the old ones where, the headlamp 'aim' is what they are testing, not the height. My C needed the headlamp aim adjusting after lowering, last year my MOT man adjusted it during the test for free, not every garage would do this though. If they are being more strict with the new test, hopefully they will fail the newer RangeRovers with those badly angled HiD headlamps that completely blind you when they are in the rear view mirror!

    MOT fail

Had a look on etka - on the headlamp page there is a part no. 535 941 297 (Adaptor with adjusting screw for vertical adjustment) its it made up of an adjusting screw and a seal. I can't guarantee its the right number but there is nothing else listed as an adjuster. The part number is the same for all years 88-95, but note that the headlight housing/glass etc. itself changed in 1992.

Robbing barstewards, so now we'll be paying out more money unless our cars are perfect. I think some garages will take advantage of the situation by inventing faults that don't exist(as they do now), then most owners will agree to have the work done then and then to save paying for a retest, whereas before you had time to get a second opinion or repair it yourself. I use an mot station that doesn't do repair work(and therfore does honest mot's) but now I'll be in the situation that if the car fails on a major point, I'll have only one day to source parts and repair it myself, there'd be no chance in getting it done at a decent specialist at such short notice.. :x  Rick, why don't you ring/call in at a VAG dealer, they should be able to tell you if you can buy them seperately.

you get two weeks for a free retest, not two days, tell mot place to chill out!
  13. the struts are not made accurately enough anyway, you'd never get the same amount of camber on both sides, get it sorted properly! and not by some monkey at a tyre/exhaust place. :|
  14. removed all 136 of the mostly corroded nuts & bolts from my bbs 3-piece rims, what a boring, repetetive & knuckle scraping job!
  15. :) once had a go in C 16v that has rear polybushes, it just felt weird to me (I've always had vw's with the passive rear steer) the car felt less nimble, and twitchy, just my opinion though!
  16. wiring problem? maybe the altenator isn't charging it does/did the battery light come on as normal for a few secs when you first turn the engine on?
  17. I have the steering clunk in the mornings too, but it happens when I reverse park when the car is warmed up too. I have a genuine g60 rack in the garage that is all brand new, not a recon, that I will be fitting soon. My mate paid a fortune for it 'special order' at the dealers, but he told them the wrong year so it wouldnt fit his earlier G60. Once its on, along with new track rods/ends, I'll let you know if the knocking goes away. Can't believe racks have gone up to £800+ now, they used to be around £450+vat. Wonder if GPC can get them at a good price from germany?
  18. Forget the venom kits. As Jay says, use OE parts for most/all things, polybushes are good for wishbone/crossmemember & steering rack mounts, please don't use poly bushes on the rear axle, it spoils the handling!
  19. I don't think the rubber 'window guides' are supposed to fit tightly against the glass, just sit close, otherwise they would give the window motors a hard time. They are there to deflect most of the rainwater away, but the rest of it runs down the glass, through the door and out of the drainage holes, just the way that VW design 'em. The plastic guide piece that is attached to the glass, and runs up and down the metal guide can become loose, this will cause the window glass to move around and rattle.
  20. Will do, might aswell include caliper removal & replacement too.
  21. RAC in Salford keys replaced my windscreen in january, I'm insured with brentacre so RAC were the approved repairer. I was worried when I dropped it off after reading horror stories on here, but they did an excellent job, I took it to their depot (they advised against doing it out in the elements) and left it for 4 hours, but most of that was curing time. The glass was Sekurit (VAG OE supplier?) and the rubber seals were new (the fitter told me that the plastic A pillar trim parts were now obsolete) The fit is perfect, the seals are all flush and the lower scuttle trim lines up properly. If I was being really picky, I can see a little of the black sealant from inside the car behind the n/side trim pillar, but that could be trimmed back anyway. They left the car and the screen perfectly clean, and the rear view mirror doesn't wobble at high speeds anymore which is a bonus! SO thumbs up to that place, but I guess it depends which fitter does the job...

  23. Replaced both mirror glass with new items yesterday, they were corroded around the edges and the heating elements had both stopped working within a week of each other. I found that the lack of heating was just corrosion between the heating element and the spade connector tabs (they push into a slot on the back of the mirror) 'early' model mirror glass has a different type of connector on the back which are flimsy and prone to snap, so be careful when pulling off the wires!
  24. do you use passat front or rear mechs with those handles? are they a straight fit? Replaced both the corroded wing mirror glasses yesterday, the heating elements had both died recently too, can see whats going on behind me now in bad weather!
  25. Yes it was, thought the name was familiar.....Car looks fantastic  .Is it the same car you came to collect the teledials in?. yeah it's the same car. Never did anything with the teledials, sold them to a porsche owner in scotland recently! you had a mk2 gti at the time didn't you?
