So this is what happened - can you spot where the big plastic pulley should be?

VR6 belt tensioner bearing replacement - how to.
stormseeker replied to PhatVR6's topic in Suppliers Forum
as an incentive to sort out a noisy bearing sooner rather than later... here's what happens when you don't! Bearing has almost completely seized - the heat generated had melted the plastic pulley and the belt was running on the (hot) bearing  -
Spot on. It's the date of fitment that affects the classification.

On Monday I had all the plastic engine covers off the VR, as I was checking/cleaning the ISV. So, I thinks to myself lets give them a bit of a clean (as the silver top cover has a nasty brownish tinge to it ). So had them washed & scoured and then propped up on the back kitchen windowsill to catch some Sun to help dry them. Went back round the front of the house to carry on working on the C only to hear an almightly crash round the back of the house a few minutes later. Sure enough the B4st@rd wind had blown the silver top cover off the windowsill and it had snapped one of the back mounting lugs off as it hit the ground :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( Anyway, had to resort to the old soldering iron again, "plastic welded" it back on. Didn't really expect it to stand the vibration & heat stress of the engine, but fingers crossed it's holding together so far ... :-) Think I'm gonna have to paint the cover to get it silver again, as it's really nasty looking.

Could be a test bed for an R32 conversion :-) Run the 2.8 for a while, then go R32????
-
I take it these jobbies won't fit in the standard manifold's plastic guides tho? 8mm sounds too big :-( (Of course you're not bothered 'bout that with your Shrek )

There are plenty more works in progress and other mad bits & bobs lying around at Dubsport to have a look at while you're there.
-
I bunged another 256M of RAM in mine and got another 15BHP....
-
Ahhhh that screw - the big brass screw on the side of the ECU ;-)
-
As far as I know there is no screw! ...it's all done with the ISV under the complete control of the motronic ECU.
-
I used some of that thick flexi-wire from an old exhaust bandage kit - couldn't find a Jub. clip big enough, and the two biggest ones I had joined together were too big!
-
I think the only characteristic you can be certain of is that it will break :-( I don't think the replacement/repair of the mechanism is really too difficult, just extremely fiddly in the removal of all the headlining.

Ideal Corrado Passenger Seat Companion.....?
stormseeker replied to kvwloon's topic in General Car Chat
I'd have to polish up the leather ready for Kelly Brook, or the bird from MI2. Aww go on then, why not both - plenty of room in the back :-) "Sorry Kelly, these Corrados are notoriously unreliable, we've broken down and we'll have to get a room..." Edit: backseat passenger Thandie Newton from MI:2... -
Mine's still creaking as it tilts - even after I greased it up. I always cringe when I use it, just waiting for a BANG... :-(

http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8909 If only I'd made time to do mine last weekend.... boo hoo

Yeah - I saw the "adaptation" section "for modules that support it" like you say, if you know the channel number. I'll have a plough through Bentley (fnarr fnarr) when I get home to see if it's mentioned.
-
Just ordered mine this afternoon, along with my tensioner... Got quoted £16.80 +VAT for the tool
-
That was the area of debate - certainly things like TPS vs. mass airflow & TPS values for closed & open throttle might be learned then, but mixture adaptation (the legendary "learned O2 values") & some other minor variable bits & bobs were re-learned every 24 (or was it 26?) starts of the engine.... Anyone know any firmware engineers in Bosch :-) ;-) we need a good contact on the inside
-
Sounds like the belt tensioner bearing to me!
-
Ahhh - I'll check back with him then to see if it's changed... There was a bit of debate between the car's owner and the CCGB technical guru and the consensus was a reset wasn't needed after the CPS change. The CPS fault logged in the ECU was "intermittent" anyway, and the owner reckoned he could tell when it was working and when it wasn't as some days the car felt a lot more "livelier" than others!
-
Sorry - cam. That had been changed on the Storm with the smooth idle with which I was impressed... according to the owner it was smooth idling before the cps change too before anyone asks...
-
Had a sit in another VR6 (Storm) last week after I'd given the owner a hand changing the CPS - idle was much much smoother than mine - but noticed while my VAG-COM was plugged in the idle speed was 800rpm. Mine idles at about 680-700rpm - I'm wondering if it's the slightly lower speed that makes mine seem rougher. I've cleaned & checked the ISV and that seems to have made the cold start idle a lot better, but when warm it still seems rough. I know the VR is characteristically rough anyway, but if mine was as smooth as the storm's I'd be well chuffed :-) Both are within spec. but I'm wondering if there was a way to prod the Motronic to increase the idle speed with VAG-COM :? :?:

Sounds right to me - that 97,521 figure used to be on the Karmann website, but I think it's gone now. But 9000 into the UK is the widely accepted figure. Compare that with when Ford first launched the Ka - they were a little worried 'cos it was only selling about 11,000 a month in the UK  9000 Corrados sold in the UK over 6-ish years.. :!: :!:
-
Well - after phoning round every breakers in the back of Autotrader and local Yellow Pages I've finally bitten the bullet and ordered a new tensioner assembly from VW £63.52 + VAT  No one seems to have any VR6 engines for breaking - they're all sold as complete units, such is the demand for them. One good thing :? the 6203 bearing is also used in my Discovery belt tensioner  so if that goes, at least I've got a spare :-)
-
Yeah I'm sure :-) I had mine to bits on Monday when I was cleaning out my ISV - there's a solid pip on the top left of the box that plugs into the mounting hole on the side of the hose - no air going through there at all :-)
