  1. The French police are very hot on speeding offences now also. We get off pretty lightly here compared to the residents over there. The French police speed traps/cameras are rarely in plain sight. Cameras are often hidden in old cars parked by the roadside. In some ways I consider us to be the lucky ones.
  2. I did know that, you're right. I was just being perdantic. I'll do more than dismiss the 'camera thing' - I'll call it complete fantasy. While there may be a government white paper that suggests how the camera partnerships choose camera sites, there's no obligation for them to follow it. This discussion was about speeding and police hiding in horse boxes. The use of mobile phones whilst driving is a completely seperate issue, and one I imagine would be viewed unanimously. I'm amazed that you can regard speeding and drink driving as an offence of the same magnitude. If we're talking about 100mph past a primary school then fine but is, say, 85mph on a motorway comparable to *any* drink driving offence? It's no excuse of course, but it's easy to find yourself creeping to 85mph on a motorway while concentrating on the road ahead and the drivers around you. Drink driving requires a concious effort.

    Power Gains

I'm sure that most people will point you towards a supercharger. They certainly seem to be the best value per bhp.
  4. What I was getting at is that it's a bit of a daft phrase. If *everybody* was stationary then there'd be no crashes therefore, obviously, speed is going to be a factor in any collision. Breaking the speed limit can not always be classed as being inconsiderate towards others. I have no sympathy for people that blatantly shatter the speed limit in built-up areas though...much like the d**k in the Escort that must have been doing 70 over the 30mph blind crest close to my work this evening (with a full car-load of chavs). Puuuurrrllleeeeaassseee. Do you really believe that to be the case?! It sure as heck isn't around these parts.
  5. Of course it is. You can't crash into something if you're stationary. My opinion is that speed limits have their place but they're outdated and laughably enforced. That is all.
  6. Blimey, you must be doing something right! Range Rovers don't do much for me really, at least not ones with road tyres, but I can see how that thing could surprise a few people.
  7. Is it just the fuel gauge that does it, or the temperature gauge too? The voltage regulators on the back of the clocks can cause some gauge-related strangeness. It's unlikely to be the cause though if it's just the one gauge at fault.
  8. Where do BMW store their sub-machine guns there days? If it's in the glove compartment then they're jolly well going to have to change the name to suit.
  9. There's nothing quite like asking for advice then ignoring all of it! I'll be interested to see what the Eaton can do though.
  10. My Leon produces 206g/km officially. That means the road tax has increased from £200 to £210 for 12 months. That's pretty-much what the annual rise was anyway.
  11. I meant VW A4 platform, not A4 as in the Audi model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_A_platform
  12. The last time I filled up it was 107.9 for V-Power, but that was almost two months ago. I'm down to a quarter of a tank so I'll have to fill up again soon, and I suspect it's going to be quite a bit more expensive this time.
  13. I dunno. You tell me? I said "should be" as it's an 04 plate, which is when the MK5 came out. The Mk1 Leon is definitely based on the same A4 chassis as the Mk4 Golf. The Mk2 Leon and Mk5 Golf share the same A5 platform. I stand by my previous comment about the Fabia vRS though. It's the one diesel car I find tempting.
  14. What a beautiful example that was. I remember being very impressed with those wheels when I first saw them on the car. That 'plate isn't showing up on the insurance database though so at a guess it's either off the road, wearing a private 'plate, or *GULP*....dead.
  15. All the cars in that poll are based on the A4 platform, are they not? For me, this is a no-brainer. I can't fault my Leon for build quality or reliability. Considering it shares more than the odd component with the Mk4 Golf and Audi A3 you get a much newer/lower mileage car for your money, compared to VW or Audi eqivalents. That said, if you read through the seatcupra.net forum you'll find that most major faults with Mk1 Leons seem to occur in the FR diesel models. Have you considered a Skoda Fabia vRS?
  16. I'm amazed that you haven't got a trade insurance policy. With the amount of vehicles you go through it'd be so much simpler. * EDIT * Holy cow. I just checked all my vehicles on that 'askmid' site and one of the bikes isn't showing as insured. I added it to my policy a few weeks ago and was riding it until the tax ran out at the end of last month. Sure enough I just tried to bin the SORN and apply for tax and it's shown as not insured. That's really shady. Thanks for that link! I'll be giving my insurance company a good talking to tomorrow. I'm in shock that not only have I been riding the bike but it's been sitting in the garage uninsured as well. I can only assume they got the 'plate wrong when I gave it to them over the 'phone.
  17. I think Corrados did have speed sensitive volume. IIRC the problems often occur because the wire to the stereo is blue, the same as the remote output cable on most aftermarket stereos. When the speed input and stereo 12v output are connected together, it screws the speed signal for the spoiler too.
  18. My Leon was re-mapped by Custom Code. They offer a service where they come to you for no extra cost. If your car is standard, or lightly modified, then you'll only need a generic map. They're very reasonably priced too.
  19. A chap I know had a Peugeot 205 with a 240bhp Turbo Technics conversion. He bought it from a Rolls Royce (I think) engineer who had made one of those exhaust valves himself. It worked very well.
  20. Somewhere around £700 as a rough estimate. Hard to say without seeing pics though. With half-decent VR6s coming along for £1500, the 16v is fast becoming a give-away motor!
  21. Nice ride. I'm half tempted to trade my ZX-6R in against a 675, but the ZX is such a great bike. I think I'll take a 675 out this summer and see what's what.
  22. It's hard to tell from those pictures. I quite like the door handles though.
  23. A new-ish 1000cc sports bike will produce well over 1000bhp per tonne....for about five grand. Ok ok, not quite the same but still a lot of fun.
  24. Four-stud wheels are the first clue.
