1) Solved my light steering. 2) New bosch isv. 3) New plugs. 4) Simple clean of the maf (still amazes me how a simple spray or two of maf cleaner transforms the economy and zeal of the whole drive). 5) Had a go at a boulder sized chip repair (woud've been seemless had the paint been a match :bad-words: )

Biggest lesson learnt today was the so-called 'specialists' aren't always all that and you should consult mechanics on local forums as they're more emotionally invested in doing a proper job.

Changed both oil pressure senders. Number plate bulbs changed. MOT passed :)

Replaced the oil pressure sender for the VDO gauges as the old one was sticking.

Replaced all the HT leads - runs lovely now.

Cleaned ISV.

Pic? what method did you use? my dad taught me a good one, sharpen a match with a stanley knife then dip it in the paint and just touch it on the chip, works a treat.

My plan was to fill the chips with paint, and then wet sand it back and polish the paint back up, i think i might have to re-laquer the whole bonnet now.

Just use 2000 grit paper on a block and the new paint will lift away easily enough. It's much softer than the original lacquer so you won't do any damage if you're careful. As EJ says, I use a cocktail stick for chips rather than the effort if shaving a match down though! :lol:

That's what i've started doing but wasn't sure where to stop so ended up deciding to do the whole bonnet, looks a right mess at the moment and is taking a long time.

 

I think the lacquer was already a bit thin, definitely had lots of defects in it. If you look around the reflection of the light tube you can see it has loads of little sunken dots over it.

Sounds like it's had filler before then. It's the filler not fully hardened prior to paint that causes the pin prick sized sink holes usually.

Back in the old boys day they dint have cock tail sticks, or stanley knives, he had to shave down the match with a threepenny bit. :lol:

Took her in for a service thorough check over and needs *deep breath*:

- New oil temp sensors

- New top mounts

- Passenger door latch

- Wheel alignment (due to raising coilovers)

- Exhaust hangers

- Aux belt

- New brake hoses all round (goodridge)

This is where i've got to so far, don't think it helps that my sanding block is an inch square, going to buy some better ones, been looking at the Durablock set.

Yeah am expecting about 6 weeks. Was just a convenient time to get it up there.

Well not today, but a few days ago, at my trusty mechanics as I don't have access to a lift: New Lemforder strut top mounts all round, new VAG rear axle beam bushes fitted, brake system bleed and a new lambda sensor. The car now handles appreciably better and the engine is nice and smooth. I've replaced nearly all the engine related sensors now, so lets see what happens to the idle and cutting out woes. Fingers crossed.

Yeah am expecting about 6 weeks. Was just a convenient time to get it up there.

 

Mines going over there Saturday morning. Hopefully going to be finished by August as it needs to take me across Europe haha. Poor Vince.

Crossing my fingers and hoping that my VR is going to be done by the end of the month. It's been there since January! When I took it in, they were quiet. When I gave them the go ahead to start work on the engine, they said the workload had gone mental. :(

 

Full top and bottom engine rebuild again (including new pistons with overbored block), roose motorsport hoses, new genuine VAG engine wiring loom being fitted and hopefully a new fuel pump too. It'd just had refurbished injectors fitted a few weeks before it went in too.

 

Soo... should be running sweet. Can't wait. Missed the car like crazy! Will be making a new members gallery thread and starting over when I get it back.

Same Jim, miss it like mad, been of the road since september, really gets you down. Thats sh it about it needing another re-build! Bloody things. After all that work though should be running amazing. with the fact theyve had it since January in mind, i might need to start thinking about cancelling mine and the misseseseses holiday to Leiden to MIVW. This years just been one disappointment after another. still, better the head went or gasket, now and i got it nice and early rather than half way across holland.
