I've said it before, and I'll say it again; "buy cheap, buy twice"

 

I know this has been covered before, but what spark plug shall I use on my stg 2 V9 set up, I was running iridium (sp) plugs, but have been told Mk3 Golf 16v plugs are good for the job, but I'm sure I read on here a while back that someone said Mk2 Golf 16v plugs are the ones?? I just had a quick look on GSF's website, the MK2 and Mk3 16v plugs have a different part no, but the mk3 16v is the same as the 2.8vr6 part number (not getting them from GSF, just using it for an idea). I dont have the luxury of ordering off the interweb as I need them for the morning.

 

can someone shed some light please.

I got the alloy pipes off ebay mate, i know ebay's not usually the best source but its metal so cant be too bad, i didnt go for their silicon hoses as they did look a bit cheap and nasty and wanted to make sure i got trusted ones. I just need to chop them down a bit so will need to get the hacksaw out!!

 

Whereabouts on the bay of e mate? I'd like some 80mm pipe, only an inch or so to make up an adaptor for a bmc, so I don't need to modify my existing maf pipe. Got a mate nearby who builds boats and hovercrafts and can (hopefully) weld a flange onto the pipe for me.

 

I had a quick look, but the one place I found wanted £23 for a 30cm legnth, which I wasn't too keen on...

hi Chris, you found the belt tensioner then??? i also had the iridiums in mine for ages, but when i needed/wanted some new ones, i did not fancy paying for the iidiums so put some mk216v plugs in (miles cheaper :) ) and no difference at all, in fact the cold start in marginally better.

Thanks Karl, mk2 16v plugs it is then. No didnt find chain tensioner so going to the stealers today to pick one up, should be firing her up tonight! :D At long last.

The 16V plugs that work well in VR6 S/Cs are Bosch "Yytrium" from GSF.

 

Personally, I'd use NGK BKR6E for Supers and BKR7E for turbos (or BKR8E for summer and / or high boost). Both are extremely cheap and work well.

I'm helping rob install he's rotrex charger on saturday. but have gotta re-locate the MAF as per the vortech's so what AMP cable should we use for extending it???

Karl, I've got some 6 core screened that's ideal for MAF extension cables, can't remember the Belden no though.

Farnell Electronics, but its usually in rolls of 50m or more. I have some off cuts from installation jobs I've done recently 8) You can have some FOC

Karl, hmm am i getting excited yet, yeah just about :lol:

 

I might have to take it easy ish when we take it out to test (if we get it running that is :lol:) as its had the wheel bearings and track rods etc done today so the alignment will be out, oh well, its only tyres :lol:

I know! I might as well post up a thread in the meets section "Robs Rotrex Fitting Day!" and see how many people turn up :lol:

 

As long as i can get the drive space i dont mind though, shouldnt be a problem a bit later on in the day although first thing in the morning when karl turns up i will imagine everyone will still be in bed :lol:

Gonna be quite a large amount of horsepower on your drive this weekend Rob, hope the neighbours aren't sensitive :)

 

Pics and most likely videos, but nothing quite as hairy as when your about Toad!

Yep there may well be the equivalent horsepower to a bugatti sitting on the driveway :lol: will be good if you do come though Dave, as you are a smart bloke so you will definately come in handy :lol:

 

Lots of pics will be taken no doubt and some videos will be good (as long as its not a video of the engine blowing up :( ).

 

The sister thing was started at edition just because i mentioned i have a sister who had my tent. Its a bit worrying really as they all assume my sister is going to be gorgeous so does that mean they think im gorgeous? :lol: unless they want me to dress up and pretend to be 'my sister' :lol:

Jesus H, how many CF members does it take to fit a light bulb?! :lol: Still, the Rotrex is a very special light bulb 8)

 

Crazy Dave has told me some interesting things about the Rotrex and I'm getting little pangs of temptation.....hmmmmm.... I like the idea of half a bar of boost at idle (depending on application) :shock: Being as the rotrex is so small, I could use it to drive a mahooooosive turbo like this - http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT60/GT6041_731377_1.htm :lol:

 

Anyway, good luck Rob, hope it goes well. I'm sure it will with a hoard of techies helping you out.

 

This weekend I am mostly fitting a head with big valves in it 8)

 

It's a Schimmel built head. 1mm oversize valves made of an inconel alloy, 3 angle valve cut, port matching, HD springs, titanium collets and caps, viton seals etc etc.... The sweetness 8)

Mint 8) Who needs knock sensors? Check out those piston crowns, they are perfect :lol: All you need is a good map and a careful ear ;-)

 

It's not all sweetness and light for me though. The bores are slightly scratched from the remains of smashed compressor blade entering the engine, but fingers crossed they'll be OK.

 

The replacement turbo has had to go back as it was faulty, sounded like a washing machine on a 1200rpm spin! Reason why is arrowed, shoddy manufacture!

And I'm on second turbo manifold (the first cracked) and that has had to be shipped off to a cast iron specialist for modification.

 

So it's not all plain sailing with these VR turbos, the development and costs are ongoing!

 

Here's another shot of the jiggered turbo.... something harder than aluminium was bouncing around in there, but from where it came, I have no idea! Amazingly it still made plenty of boost and soldiered on regardless. Garrett's are tough sons of bitches 8)

And lastly for Friday's picture fest..... Bill schimmel has produced a cast elbow for his short runner (and others), which makes the pipework easier and allows a lot more room for a 2nd SPAL fan 8)
