I know plenty of people on here run 'bangers' as day to day hacks to preserve their corrados, and I just wondered if anyone had any tips for what to look for in a sub £500 car. Obviously reliablity is going to be the main issue, theres no point buying a shed that needs alot of engine work to keep it going. I've noticed alot of old (mk3?) escorts and new-ish shape mondeos on autotrader, what could i expect from something like that? bodywork in less than great state and space ship miles are a given, but are the engines likely to be spannered or are they just 'the norm' prices for old fords?

a friend of mine just bought a 350 quid mk2 GTI. 179k on clock but 6 months tax and test. good cheap motoring for 350 and a bit of fun too.

more than likely mk5's..............mk3 Escorts are starting to become a bit collectable..............

mk3's are the square ones that the rs turbos were based on werent they? I probably do mean mk5's, the model before the model before the focus if that make sense.

I tend to look for vauxhalls (I've got a cavalier as a second car) - really cheap parts, especially compared to VW, and so far hasn't given me any problems at all! cost £300 from the auctions and I've been running it for a year and a half :)

Yep they are quite a rare sight now. There is a really clean one in the car park where I work.

What about an oldish dull Japanese car, Nissan Micra, Sunny, Primera?? Jap cars are supposed to be ultra reliable, and they are not that desirable, so prices should be good.

Can't go too wrong with a pug 306.

Get a Cit ZX instead - same chassis, just as well built, and half the price... The Volcane TD will turn in 55+mpg, and is quite nippy too... Plus, you still get to use GSF for parts!

I think £500 or so is about the going rate for old Mk5 Escorts, Cavaliers, Almeras, Primeras, insert other non-descript 90's repster here.

Look em over, as long as they run alright, has an MOT and tax, then go for it.

Oh and  @ Ronan's avatar!

I just bought a vauxhall corsa as a daily driver this week, cheap to run, cheap to insure and cheap for parts. If it does go wrong its easy to fix!

Picked it up for £500. Bargin!

However, with only 45BHP its a hell of a contrast from my raddo!!

Drive a Corsa for a few weeks mate, you'll soon be gagging for the 'rado back ;)

Staying on Corsa's- I got a 1.7d p reg for £800. It was lovely, handled really well (I'm not kidding..), and the economy was something else- 600 plus miles on £40 quids worth of diesel.

It was easy to fix and was quite well engineered until I stuck it under the back of an artic. I have now got a 206 on the cheap to run around in but its not 'that' much better than the Corsa was.. and costs much more to run.

I think its just getting old- but there are days when the Corrado is just too hardcore for bumpy 'B' road driving and I actually prefer using the banger

yeah, i have use of a pug 206 at the moment which isnt 'fun' to drive at all, but its passible. As i say its nothing to do with the corrado as a car, just issues connected to owning cars in general.

Just picked up my bag 'o' pooh for £900 and it's as solid as a rock, there's always bargains around mate, just make sure you dont buy a £500 car that's only worth £500....just wait for the right one.

I am convinced my 62 quider will still be running this time next year. Roof bars and towbar worth 60 quid anyway. Plus it was taxed until feb 06.

Downside, it failed the MOT badly on a pair of wipers blades.

It has 4 michelins fitted, starts most of the time first turn. I do think it'll be getting a battery or starter soon though.

Seems to return mid-high 30s on the run to work.

I could get 300 for it all day long or break it.

i always found nissans etc expensive for parts and higher on insurance - unless others know better?

people buy them for reliability but old cheap cars are all going to potentially need money spent on them.

you can't go wrong with vw's citreons and vauxhalls as the parts are dirt cheap - i really wouldn't touch an almera etc. - If you do a search on ebay by distance, theres always bargains on there cos very few cars get good money on there as you generally can't look at them - hence search local and have a look first :)

Heres some prices from lots at Birtley Auctions chris - vauxhalls look favorite when on a budget ;)
