KipVR 1 Posted January 27, 2009 firts time ive seen one of them apart! and i think ive seen everything apart on a rado :lol: :cuckoo: Yeah, tidying/cleaning it up was really an excuse just to take it apart :D , I wanted to see what goes on in there, I knew mine was ok on the car so wasn't too afraid of breaking it!! I'm waiting for all the fittings and bolts to get back from the platers, probably pick them up on Friday. Bit of a boring update really (as they all are at the moment :( ) but Jon's finished the wiring now, at long last- it turns out Motors in Motion (breakers)have given me the relay plate off a diesel :roll: , and the engine bay loom off a A3 3.2, to go with my TT engine loom (the one attached to the engine) and ECU, the poor guy has been battling with wiring diagrams which don't tally up for ages, and has basically done the whole thing by tracing the wires- doesn't sound too bad but it's sooo laborious and doesn't always work out, cheers Jon you're a legend :notworthy: ... The good news is though that once he's finished doing his tax return the engine's going to be out again and real progress can be made with the final installation of components. The loom and brake lines can be fitted, and I need to do a small bit of painting in the engine bay where brackets have been taken off (washer bottle) and touching up on the battery tray etc, but to be honest it's downhill from here, and more visual progress like putting the coilies, brakes and hubs etc back on, which always feels good :) Anyway I've been getting on with making some mock up caliper brackets whilst I'm waiting for a milling machine to arrive for my new workshop I've just finished building. I'm making one out of wood just to make sure I haven't overlooked anything silly before I do them in metal. My charge cooler rad sits right in the spot you have your big fan, and like you I didn't want to cut the car at all. Top job! Natters are definitely a good thing :D, always up for a natter and a drink :D Almost finished making the mock up caliper brackets, but didn't have an M12 clearance drill :( Have to wait till tomorrow to bolt it all up together. Also did some FEA on in just to make sure all was OK- it's my brakes after all!! How much do they want for one of those these days? Hi Kev, it was £145 all in, that's trade though. I'd better get one as mine's got steam coming out of the fins by the temp switch. It's got a sticker on top saying "Denso Marston", is that who you meant? No doubt you could still get one though a specialist radiator shop, there cores are used by lots of rad manufacturers and are very good. The worst bit of the OE ones is the plastic tanks on the ends. Sorry for the confusion chap :confused: Having just said that, try their number on the site (0)1902 572777 you may get some info- maybe a supplier, they make rads to spec to they do deal with individuals. KipVR 1 Posted January 30, 2009 You could probably get one made, but I've just been informed by Pete Griff that Denso Marston no longer deal with the public unless you are a rally team :(, sorry it's been a while (10 years or so!) since I've looked into radiators and since then Marston have changed significantly.... KipVR 1 Posted February 4, 2009 Got my radiator mounting bracket today, it's a laser cut part like Crazydave's niiiice ones, but not quite the same or as nice :( Basically on the back of the radiator there are nice mounting lugs for the bracket to mount onto, but on the front of the rad there is sweet fa except for the little slots shown in photo 2. The fan isn't very heavy so I think it will be fine. It would have also been nice to mount the fan directly onto the rad as Dave has, as the fan works better closer to the radiator, but I didn't think it would make an awful lot of difference so I just made sure the bracket was airtight around it like a cowling. Unfortunately the snow has slowed things down somewhat at the workshop, but hopefully I'll be getting some of these bits bolted on soon and I'll get some proper car photos up :D . Pete Griff being an absolute legend showed me the later style throttle pedal that hopefully I can use. The one I currently have is a hanging pedal, and the position it wants to be mounted in is right where the fusebox is. The later Mk5 pedal is hinged from the bottom as shown in the pic, so it looks like i'm now spending a little more money, typical as I'm a bit short this month as I've just paid the taxman.... KipVR 1 Posted February 11, 2009 Bored at work, so started to explore a seat idea I've had for a while. I don't find the standard 90's VW seats comfortable on my back at all, so i thought I'd take the chance to make a different one. Most people would just say put in factory Recaros, but I'm hoping this will be a little different, cheaper and still look OEM. I'm going to take off the existing frame back and strip the latching and hinging mechanism from it. Then transfer the parts to a new design, something like shown below (very unfinished!), the profile of the head restraint mimics the rear seat headrest profile. the end result might end up looking a bit like the sparco chrono without the harness holes. I'm then going to strip the base and sharpen the angles on the bolsters to give it a slightly more modern angular appearance as per Mk 5's etc. Then get them trimmed in leather. Doing it this way also means I have an oe seat base and adjustment. I don't want to chop up my perfectly good leather front seats though, anyone got some old ones up for grabs? Thoughts anyone?
