I've had enough - I'm selling the Corrado

Recommended Posts

I'm at my wits end - for the past 3 years I've been having running / cutting out problems with my Corrado - I've had it to The Phirm, Stealth Racing and my local independent VW specialist, and no-one has sorted it for me.

I've looked at my bills over the past 3 years and in total the car owes me close to 10 grand in work and parts alone - and it doesn`t even run properly! It's not the 10 grand that annoys me, as if it was running right it would be worth every penny, but it's not running right and no-one can help me!

I can't keep going through this. I can't afford the money or the hassle.

Its a lovely looking car, and I loved it when it was running right, but now it just kicks me in the teeth and the wallet too much.

And my heart's just not in it any more.

Mark

hard to keep the faith when stuff goes wrong :(

have you changed the ecu relay? that's what caused my old vr6 to cut out mid drive, but then start and run fine 20 seconds later.

it wouldnt be a corrado if there werent things up with it, im not sure what the problem with your car is mate, but going on what aide has said can i just say when i had my corrado i used to have a mk 3 golf gti as a daily. That used to cut out for no reason what so ever and wouldnt start for a few mins later which isnt much good to me when your in the fast lane of a dual carrigeway . I put that into the gargae about 6 times to try and get to the bottom of the problem. Went through coils dizzy's etc. The last straw before i was about to cut my losses and get shot i phoned this one vw specialist to try and get it booked in but would have had to wait two weeks to get it booked in which was no good as this thing was a death trap everytime it cut out. The bloke just happened to mention though have you tried changing the ecu control relay? obviously i hadnt. Ordered one from vw, it cost me a tenner and i fitted it myself low and behold it fixed my problem. Nigh on 500 quid in garage bills and it turned out to be a 10 quid relay. Hope this helps

I know exactly how you feel and most on here would. I count myself lucky that I don't need my Corrado on a daily basis. And frankly it should be counting itself lucky I don't need it on a daily basis too! Also when mine is getting me down, as it is now, I can just stick it in a garage and forget about it for a bit until the love returns.

If I couldn't do that would it still be in my possession now? Not so sure....

Hi,

I don't think I have tried replacing the relay - perhaps it's worth a go for the sake of a tenner.

Right now it's barely idling never mind cutting out! It seems to be running uber rich and dumping fuel and smoke, with the rev counter hunting all over the shop.

My golf is in for a service tomorrow - I might mention the rado to them and see what they reckon. I doubt I can sell it as it is, so I need to think hard about exactly what to do with it.

Thanks for the advice guys :)

i come to surrey every few weeks, could pop over if you wish. Deffo change the ecu relay - i had the same symptoms with the revs jumping around and it cutting out for absolutely no reason. although i'm sure Stealth & The Phirm would have picked this up?

They might have picked it up .. if it did it when it was there .. Intermittent faults have this really annoying habit of never going wrong when you want them to.

I'm assuming that DJmac56's car is a VR (judging by the wheels), so definitely do the ECU relay as suggested above, and with such bad fuelling and idling issues you've got to be looking at either the MAF, the lambda probe (or the wiring for them), or there's an air leak in the induction system somewhere between the MAF and the lambda. You'd have to scan the ECU errors to get some hints about what might be going on there, but if it's leaking air you might be able to feel it.

There's also a possibility you just plain have a faulty ECU..! It can happen.

I know you're close to throwing in the towel but I'd highly suggest the guys at DG Autotech who've recently setup shop in the West Midlands. They know the VR engine really well and have some excellent skills between them - I reckon they could crack it!

Im not far myself either. Would be happy to have a look. I know you have probably checked this but almost the same things happened to my vr6. All it turn out to be was a loose maf connect. If you havent checked it, try that and see what happens. Mine came off completely when I went over a bump!!!

Hi guys,

Thanks to all of you for offering to help. It is this terrific spirit of Corrado ownership that has kept me running the car as long as I have. I also love the waves and flashes from Corrado ownership - it never happens in my golf.

I'd be really grateful for any/all of you to come over for a Candy White Clinic (errr, or does that sound like some sort of adult film) and see if we can get to the bottom of my problems.

I'd naturally lay on bacon sarnies, tea and biscuits and 4 pack thankyous to anyone who can come and help me out :)

Thanks,

Mark

I was going to suggest a forum 'love in' - sure some of the smart folks on this forum could diagnose the fault!

Yeah a fault finding day could be the way forward.

If I was closer I'd suggest a meet up as I've had all the usual running issues with my VR over the years including the stalling/lumpy idle/hunting etc so I'm used to checking all the relevant parts. Don't give up yet chap, especially as you've spent so much money. Hopefully it'll just be a small thing that's been missed.

I can never relate to all of the regular gripes I hear on this forum about Corrado reliability. I've used mine daily for over 2 years and it has never missed a beat. The only thing I have needed to replace was an oil pressure sensor which started to leak oil and that cost all of £10 from VW.

The thing is, well they are just a Mk2 Golf with a different shape body aren't they? And it's well known how they run forever no matter how much you abuse them.

Just depends on the car you buy and how neglected it has been in its previous life. All the stories of reliability come from folks who've had the cars for years, have maintained them meticulously, and know the history of the car - and as you say, they're generally really solid.

Hi,

Might any of you kind people be able to pop over my way at the weekend? If you need any extra incentive the Brooklands motor museum and Mercedes Benz world are only a 5 minute walk, or a 1 minute drive away from djmac towers  .

Ta,

There is a chance I'll be heading to Guildford at some point to collect some wheels (ebay success dependent) so I'm happy to pop in and see if I can offer any help. We can always steal bit of my car to see if that helps.

I agree - don't give up though.

Sorry I can't help, well could do the bacon sarnies !!! (If that would get me included in the trip to Merc or Brooklands - of course I am assuming there are Test Drives) !!!!

Should have added I can do lots of P.... Taking, but will leave Toad to the Forum luving !!!!!

A recent fault on mine was only diagnosed by putting on 3 new differing parts to establish which was the fault.

Hoping you get this resolved with just the extra tenner spent.

Keep positive. :)
