The term "barn find"

How would you describe / what would you expect to find if you went to look at a car that was advertised "barn find".

 

I'm looking on the first page I've come to on ebay after searching corrado. And find 3 corrados for sale that say barn find....

 

I'm thinking I should be looking at a car covered in dust and cobwebs with maybe a few bits of hay on it. Maybe seized brakes from where it been standing and very low mileage...

 

But no a couple of nice examples from the outlook well looked after....

I am amazed at how may barns there must be out there! Usually a term used for "been sat on my drive for a few years as I could not be ar$ed to do anything".

What you said is what I'd expect of a barn find, with some bird she ite on the bodywork maybe. Quite a few chancers on ebay with a warped perspective a what a barn find actually is...............

A true 'barn find' is literally something that's sat in a barn neglected and forgotten about for many years and needs a complete nut and bolt restoration.

This is what I would describe as a barn find. Found on a farm in backwoods Ontario while I lived in Canada it was included in a bankrupt farm auction. I got it for $200 dollars Canadian.

Most "barn finds" nowadays seem to be " I haven't touched it for a fortnight" kinda deals.

To me a barn find is something that's done very few miles and just been.. put away and forgotten about. So at least in the context of a Corrado, I'd expect it to have

 

Something that's done 160k and and been hauled out of a garage after 2 years being locked up isn't a barn find! :)

'Garage find ' seems to be another popular term. The funniest I've seen lately was someone stating ' 170k miles but low work duty' what a load of boolicks!! It's still got the miles on it.

 

Another regular one it seems is people describing their car as 'absolutely mint' and then going on to list all the faults and rust on it lol

I've been frequenting ebay and noticed this too. I love the uk barn finds facebook page though, I just like looking at retro cars.

 

I was kind of hoping for an absolute dog of a VR6 for £500, I need it running for 6 weeks max while my rado has an auto-manual conversion then I was going to keep it as a donor.

 

Seems all the Corrados on ebay right now (within reasonable distance) are all good cars :( (As a Corrado enthusiast, that's a strange thing to type)

If I was doing a auto to man conversion I'd look for a donor, a £500 VR6 for 6 weeks would be more trouble than its worth, however using the same car would mean its a weekend or two's job to complete the conversion as you'll have all the parts you need.

What happened to that one Wullie?

 

It got put on a trailer and taken back to the farm I lived on. After a couple of days after fluid changes the engine was running like new, started on the second turn of the key. Next came the brakes and suspension bushes and other bits and bobs to make it road useable and became a weekend toy as the rest of it was worked on bit by bit. It went off the road that winter and had a complete respray. Just after that I came back to Scotland with it still needing a new hood and interior. It was sold for $15,000 Canadian (£7500) which was unfortunately stolen by my house which needed a new roof. It went like sh*t off a shovel but was afraid of corners and a bit reluctant to stop. I had a full disk brake conversion to go on it which would have improved that. Wish now I'd brought it back with me.

I'd be very sceptical about this being genuine given the past track record of this show and others like it. I remember a barn find featured on a certain UK program being driven into the barn and having crap from the rafters brushed onto it and all sorts of agricultural stuff piled up around it...

 

Then again there's nothing rarer than eBay rarity is there?

That was about 1995 I think. I was quite happy with my profit, a lot better than the Traction Avante I rebuilt in the late sixties. About two years work, two months on the road then some B*********** stole it never to be seen again.

I saw the episode where they restored them. They got in a mechanic who specialised in OE restorations and then had them concourse inspected. Amazing how they used period spot welding tools, and painted from a certain position to ensure overspray was in the same places on the interior as it came out of the factory. It was a good show that one!

You do need to take the show with a pinch of salt on most occasions but this particular episode has spurned a few write ups from reputable sources in the US and the cars themselves are now owned by a Pontiac museum and I doubt they just put any old rubbish on show.

 

I love all the old American cars, and this show is generally quite entertaining even if, a lot of the time, they can go a little OTT with Richard Rawlings shouting! Whoo!
