    Wet sanding

Finally plucked up the courage to try my hand at wet sanding bodywork today. Other halfs pearlescen blue Bora had obviously picked up a few stone chips in its 60k miles and I'd got a quote of £200 to get them all sorted. After doing some reading up on http://www.detailingworld.co.uk and now being the owner of a Porter Cable polisher I thought I'd give it a try. Ordered a touch-up kit from http://www.paints4u.com which is a superb company to deal with. Easy bit was going round touching in the little chips, lost count after 50. Hardest bit was taking the wet and dry paper to what was previously silk smooth paintwork - nervewracking isn't the word. After a bit of trial and error discovered that it's actually amazingly straightforward - hardest thing is to pluck up the courage to use wet and dry with enough pressure to achieve the result. I'd recommend that everyone try it - saved me a small fortube and taken real pride in doing some bodywork myself. I forgot to take some before pictures but going to be doing the Passt this week and will take pics of that - then its on to the Nugget. All the materials, paint and brushes, loads of wet and dry, clear lacquer for all 3 cars cost me less than £40
  8. If my pockets were deep enough I'd love some LM's as I'm sure everyone else would. Been thinking about some longer term plans for the old girl and have a dream that one day will become reality when I come into some money in 2-3 years time. Plan is to go mid-engined and rear wheel drive with either an S4 or RS4 V8 lump - I know that its pretty straightforward technically, athough obviously not without certain challenges. The biggest challenge will be keeping the exterior as standard looking as possible.
  9. Lenso RS5's - if I'm going to keep her I wouldn't mind a new set of wheels by way of an apology to her :D
  10. Must admit to walking away having booked another day with them, I do have a £10 off voucher that someone can have FOC thats valid for any course booked from their website before July
  11. Update in 1st post - all I can say is that it was a fantastic day out
  12. Lifted from Autocar Is it a car, a plane or a motorbike? We're not quite sure, but its maker claims that it's a bit of all three; you're looking at the Acabion GTBO, a motorbike-engined, aeroplane-inspired 'vehicle'. A peculiar mix of Swiss and British engineering, Italian design and American dragster components, it’s the creation of Swiss engineer Dr Peter Maskus. Underneath the ultra-streamlined carbonfibre body is a 1.3-litre Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike engine, with a turbocharger and strengthened internal components made by US hot-rod builders. Acabion claims it can produce up to 700bhp, and is capable propelling the GTBO to speeds of up to 342mph. And it’s a hybrid. Two small electric motors take over to propel the car when parking or manouevring at low speeds, although they don’t contribute to powering the car at higher speeds. The whole thing weighs 370kg unladen, which helps to give the car another remarkable set of figures – fuel consumption of just 70.62mpg at 62mph. Equally remarkable is the proposed price: if you want one of the 26 cars Acabion says it will produce between now and 2011, it will cost you £1,260,000.
  13. Their website is at http://www.billgwynne.com It was bought as a b'day present for me by my better half, I strongly suspect she's hired a DB9 for me for my 40th this year - got her well trained :D
  14. Absolutely stunning - goes quite well too http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/news/defau ... ryId=16159
  15. Off to the Bill Gwynne Rallyschool tomorrow for a full days tuition / instruction in a Mk2 Escort. Done a fair bit of track work with my job over the years but always wanted to do a rally day totally different techniques required Really looking forward to it but also nervous that I don't make a pratt of myself Update What a fantastic day out, all day in a Twin Cam Escort with hydraulic fly-off handbrake and a loose gravel special stage I'm pretty sure we had more fun in the Escort than the majority who booked the course in Impreza's - they were just too grippy Fantastic tuition, really encouraged you to get the car sliding, delicacy is definitely the key and took some getting used Really pleased with my end of day assessment - rated very good for reactions, smoothness and mechanical sympathy One guy got quite a hard time - told in no uncertain terms that he needed to improve his concentration, he demonstrated no smoothness, had slow reactions - poor sod turned up in a lovely Phase 2 Clio V6 - don't fancy his chances of keeping it one piece for too long Only thing I don't like about these kind of days is the amount of utter garbage you hear being spouted by know-it alls, find it very difficult to keep quiet Must frustrating thing was seeing Bill Gwynnes 14 year old granddaughter throw a car around far better than I ever could
  16. Looks superb. Mr Wintle is a true gent - not many like him around.
  17. Very very nice - giving serious consideration to a MK2 myself at the moment
  18. Looks like a nice piece of workmanship, not that fond of cages on anything other than competition cars but thank God we all like different things. Can see the sense in keeping the rear seats, could the cage be taken out and all trace of its existence in the car be eliminated?
  19. Part of the UK dealer launch programme. Definitely look better in the metal than in pictures - for the money though I'd rather have a GT3
  20. Well if you ever want to sell it Jim, I'll take it off your hands for 80% of what you paid for it
  21. I love totally pointless and madcap projects like this - standard of workmanship looks absolutley top notch
  22. Very very rare, I think less than 100 sold in the UK, another VW oddity but none the worse for it, buy it, keep it looking standard and drop a G60 in it - real Q car
  23. Very nice but I'd rather have the Vette in the background
