Hi folks.. my drive to work this morning couldn't help but think that something smelt funny.. that and the car was struggling to accelerate, and I was getting pants fuel economy..
Got to work and had a quick feel around the wheels and the front left was rather warm (where the others were stone cold) and was steaming a bit.. and absolutely stunk. Fairly clear case of a fubar caliper?

Was going to have a go at Riley's headlight detailing modification today - went to get the headlights out.. the driver side was fine but the 3 screws on the passenger side are so horrendously corroded and rusted I don't know how i'll ever actually get them out. The recessed / hidden one is also totally shot.. no idea what i'm meant to do to get at that!! So had to abandon ship on that one :(

Sorry oh learned one - not all of us have friends that work for VAG!! :)
I could send you my old one to try on the car if you want?
Hm - I do appreciate the offer mate but if I do the job I wanna just do it once and would prefer to fit sommat brand new... but it might be a tight month money wise so i'll let you know on that :)

Discovered some oil in my expansion tank today.. not a lot of it but still not good to see it there. Doesn't seem to be any moisture under the filler cap or on the dip stick so trying to be optimistic and hoping its the oil cooler thats shot rather than the head gasket.
Looking on ETKA they seem to list two oil cooler P/N's - 068 117 021B and then 068 117 021BX - the BX one is substantially cheaper. Does anyone know the difference and which is suitable? I've googled till i'm blue in the face and just can't find any more information!
Cheers.

Oooh crap - that smarts :(
Well on the plus side.. white Corrado.. break out the tippex!!
-
Super.
-
but i reckon 375quid is not an unrealistic amount to have saved to rescue a rare rado
Is that all he wanted for it in the end?!? I didn't realise it was as cheap as that!! :(
-
Yikes! Thanks for pointing this out Gav. Thankfully didn't get any mud on my car after leaving the site on Sunday.. but will go and have a good poke round the motor again tomorrow when its light!
-
we all had our chances to save a rado but chose not to
Well I think there is a difference between wanting to save it, and being able to afford to save it. Believe me, if I could afford to have bought it I would have done.
It's just dissappointing mate and i'm sure you can understand where i'm coming from. There are plenty of other Corrado's out there being split for parts. That sucks enough but they're just one of the 97k that rolled off the production line. Only a handful in this country have any history attached to them and this one of them.. thats why its a real let down :(
-
Looks superb. Would love one of those one day!
-
WTF. Its one of the fricking press cars. Can't believe its been bought to be split :(
-
If you do decide to go for one, and if you consequently decide to tune it, I believe you need to seriously consider upgrading the brakes. I think its the Polo G40 that basically uses the standard miniscule brakes from other versions of the Polo's - and as the G40 is quite quick, its a recipe for disaster without suitable braking to match the grunt!

Common fault is the reason really, just as Supercharged said.. definately worth swapping sooner rather than later. Think a new cap is about 7 quid from VW?
-
Gawd.. its slow to buffer but even at 22 seconds in that guys voice is driving me nuts!!
-
Thats the way it should ideally be - hovering between min and max. Does the level continue to drop though or does it reach that mid point and then stay there from then on?
-
Don't think its the same people mate...

Aha.. Google bought me back here with the right info :)

Good old Steve from C+R to the rescue again!

I'd say restore. I think most people on here would say the same. Nice, original examples of Corrado's (especially earlier models) are getting harder and harder to find. There is a lot to be said for a nice clean original valver! :)
-
Weird.. past few days have seen so many new members show up!
Anywho.. for good advice on what to look for when shopping for your Corrado you could do a lot worse than to read our buyers guide:

Covers most problem areas! :)

Cheers mate but its ok.. probably best to avoid talking about pirating software on an open forum! :)
-
Agreed with what has been said. On high mileage, budget to have some head work done at some point and the classic timing chains / tensioner / clutch type job eventually but otherwise the VR is a fairly solid old lump! I would happily buy a 140,000 miler!
-
Hi Laura - thanks for that. Will be trying VW probably over the weekend if I get my act together.. but if I don't then i'll pester you next week for the p/n :)
easypops - that does look like it! Happen to have a VAG part number?! :)
-
Apologies for earlier. I think myself and another mod deleted your double posting by deleting each one of the two threads so you had nothing left. Doh!
You were asking about a buyers guide before - well read and be enlightened!
3.5k should get you a great VR - prices are a bit weak at the moment - bad for sellers, great news for you! :)

I'm going to guess that its the classic circlip problem.
Pull up your gear surround (grip either side of the plastic piece of trim surrounding the gear knob and just yank upwards firmly) and take a look at the base of the gear stick and do the left - there should be a small circlip on the left hand side. You'll notice as you move gears around that there is excessive play - with the circlip fitted, it prevents this and makes the shift accurate.
If its broken off, its not uncommon to find it in two pieces sitting just to the side of the gear stick!
See this topic for discussion on the problem and solutions, and an example diagram from ETKA (on page2) showing the location of it. Be aware that there are a few different part numbers for this circlip depending on the model of Corrado you've got!
If it is indeed the circlip you'll be glad to know its a 30 second fix and will cost a quid or so from the VW dealer :)

Easy one for you.. is this a seized / seizing caliper?

Nope.. Not changed anything down there for a while, and did not have anything noticable happening like it pulling. I just noticed mid way through my drive that the car seemed slow and lazy to speed up when i put my foot down, and that it was slowing down quite quickly when letting off the gas!
