How long....

Have you had your car,or how long do you intend on keeping it?

Seeing as most Corrado's are getting on for 10-14+ years old now and the expense of keeping cars like these,are making me think that I will sell the Corrado and the Gti and buy something newer and less prone to having bits fall off and the advance of the tinworm. :(

 

But would I be able to find a car as much fun as either the Golf or Rado,without having to spend 15-20k for something new,or buying a 2-5 year old car and getting more power out of it with a specialist tuner?(Revo'd mk4 TDIGT maybe?)

 

The main reason for this,is that I got,for no apparent reason,brochures from VW for the mk5 Golf and Bora including price lists,which has got me thinking.

The GTtdi 4motion was one that caught my eye..... :?:

Golf V6 4Motions can be had for around the £8,000 mark now.. and Skoda Octvia vRS's for around £6,000! I'm talking young examples here too! Both are brisk, both are tunable, and both will be considerably less prone to 'bits dropping off' syndrome!

 

Before I get bombarded with flames.. yes the driving experience is a lot less involving, yes hardly anyone stands and admires your car any more and yes you're driving a comparatively mass produced machine. But reliability, superb build quality, and cheaper parts are worth considering! Plus much more modern and frugal powerplants, cheaper insurance, and a lot less regular occurances of mechanics itching their heads and saying 'Corraduh..? Whats what one of those?'

 

I definately wouldn't consider buying any VW's brand new though because of depreciation.. save yourself a LOT of money and buy one a year or two old!

 

Get something like a 25th Anniversary Golf with the PD150 unit, and get it Revo'd... £12,000 will buy you a 3 year old minter, and simply lashing £400 on a remap will give you 200BHP and 300lb/ft of torque... oh, and you can still pull 45MPG!

Good question. I plan on keeping mine for a little while longer yet, I've just sunk a load of money into it and plan on sinking a little more before I'm done. Then it's a case of getting money's worth, another 10-15 years should cut it :roll:

 

If I was in a more viable position, with less milage to do each day I probably would have shifted it already in favour of a VR6. Put simply, there is no other car out there that feels right for the budget I've got. Ideally, I'd like an A3 1.8T - too expensive though!

I've had mine for exactly a year now and in that time i've spent lots on it, too much really but even after i've worked a 12 hour nightshift i still take the long way. I don't think a new 'off the peg' type of car would give me that.

I plan to keep it for many years just letting it evolve...... 1.8T maybe!

My plan is to rebuild the engine and get the bodywork tarted up so that I can (hopefully) enjoy the car for another 10 years! :)

ive had mine for almost a year and planning on keeping it for many many more, ive already put to much money into it to even consider getting rid, besides i wouldnt wanna get rid.

probably sell it when either i get bored or too many bits fall off :-)

 

if you are interested in a golf gttdi then take one for a run , most vw dealers are more than pleased to offer a test drive

I've had my vr6 corrado for two years now and have just come through a selling it phase even got to changein the plates round on it ready.

 

But i'm gonna sink even more money into it and get all the finishing touches sorted and the bodywork dings, dents, scratches and stonechips sorted and look for some new wheels.

 

I LOVE THE CORRADO, its a beast, its a classic, the vr6 sounds great and I dont want a boring to drive mk4 gti which i nearly bought of my mum.

owned mine 6years, no plans to sell it but i do sometimes wonder were it will be in 5-10years time.

I love the Corrado.. but I guess I just don't have the kind of salary that makes it viable to keep one on the road. Well, not unless i'm willing to just have NO life at all and never go out.

 

And not all MK4's are boring!

Got to the point of selling it after 3years, see for sale section (link in my siganture). I am driving a Seat Leon Cupra, but getting very close to selling the Leon and keeping the Corrado. To be honest the Seat is no more reliable (neither car has completely let me down and bits are ot falling off my Corrado), costs more to insure and is less economical from a petrol point of view. It is a bit dull to drive too. On the plus side the Leon is faster and way more refined.

I understand that Jim and i have been close a few times too selling just cause it is an expensive car to run and i dont need the mechanical problems that sometimes afflict my car.

 

i'm not digging on your mk4 jim, i nearly bought my mum's mk4 20v gti 3 door in black with lovely beige leather and audi tt polished rims but it is a boreing car to drive at the end of the day, somethin needs too be done with the suspension desperatly, i like it when i drive it, its quiet,refined,hassle free but it makes me appreciate my corrado's qualites.

 

This is a corrado forum as well so we have too give it a bit of praise now and again

I've had mine for 2 years and have driven it for about 6-8 months... I had loads of problems to start with and after spending a year in the workshop its running... the engine is now pretty much brand new and has just finished being run in but still has problems so is back in the workshop again! All this has cost me about the same as buying a Storm (including the initial purchase) and is still just a standard 2.0 16V!

 

Today has got me at an all time low as have just spoken to the mechanic who has had it back since Tuesday and he has no idea what is causing the misfire! I do feel like chucking it all in and being done with it but I know that it will be worth it in the end (I hope)

I mean sheesh, mine is a diesel 5 door.. its not exactly going to set the world alight. But like you say.. the comfortable ride, the refinement, and the overall interior quality compared to the Corrado is hard to ignore.

 

I'd love to try a 'sorted' V6 4Motion or something though.. a bit of tuning and getting the awful wobbly handling out too!

 

But yeah.. this is a Corrado forum, and i'm still happy to say it deserves plenty of bigging up wherever possible. If I wanna talk MK4's, i'll bog off to UK MKIV's :)

Yeah the comfort is in a different league, the arm rest and cupholders are a very useful touch and the interia is what sells them for me, and potholes and speed bumps are not a problem in it. On my mum's though for a supposed "Gti" the suspension is definatly on comfort settings and i dont trust it driveing hard like i do the corrado.

 

I would like to try a v6 or R32, unfortuantly they were out of my price range when i was decideing and had the same running costs as my corrado, fuel etc wise.

 

Time will tell if i made the right decision but its a sorta love hate thing.

ive had mine now for just over 3 years,and apart from new wheels seats,suspension etc,which didnt really need changing,ive spent hardly any money on it,apart from the obvious service parts,and ive now decided to take the car off the road to spend even more money on it even though i dont really need to

i've been there and done the nice sensible, reliable car thing.... and it sucked!!!!

 

dont get me wrong, my focus served me well and never went wrong, but what a boring car!!! the corsa, i am ashamed to admit owning... the jeep, it was good for pulling a horse box n just about nothing else... my Alfa 145 was good till the bottom started falling out of it but not as fast or a good to drive as Scarlett!!!

 

and face it, my C does better in petrol than the corsa n the jeep, and costs me less to insure than any other car i've had....

 

plus... (yeah, i know i am going on a bit now....) the repairs to the C over the past 3 months of owning her are still less than i would have paid for finance on the past 4 cars i have had........ plus what other car makes u smile like that when u walk out to the car park after work n realise ure the one getting to drive it home?????

 

so, basically, i'm keeping mine for a while!!!!!! :D

This is the 4th year for me now and to be honest most of the paying out has been through choice not necessity. When I bought the car I wanted to keep it in the best condition I could (bodywork & mechanical) and also improve the odd thing (samco hoses etc), also I like to think prevention is better than cure so I have spent money on things before their time has come!

 

In my last job I was fortunate enough to drive many new performance cars and was not impressed by any of them when compared to my older C. The brand new 4 Motion did nothing for me, neither did the brand new Alfa 156 2.5 24v, and neither did the Astra Turbo!

All of these new "Sports" cars just felt sterile and without character, and none felt as solid as the C does, also I cant stand the looks of most new cars as they all seem to be slowly converging into one monotonous shape and colour!

 

The Corrado is a good looker, has character, large appeal, raw power (for us VR6 owners :D ) and I believe feels as special as any new counterpart if not more.

 

I wouldn't part with my C for anything out there at the moment because when I am out and about I feel I am driving something special amongst all the humdrum surrounding me!

Seeing as mine's in the bodyshop at the moment getting the few bits of rust sorted out, it had a new head (and the rest) a couple of months ago and I got a CAT1 alarm fitted just after I got it...probably a little while!

I have been thinking about selling up recently, because it's costing me a fortune, and running something more reliable and frugal would make sense...but when has sense been a factor in Corrado ownership?

The main thing that makes me want to keep it though, is the sheer pleasure I get from driving it. I've just got back from Lincolnshire in work's 1.7TD Ashtray, and I took the fun way back, except it was no fun at all. Nasty handling, unresponsive engine, and the feeling that I was going to be pitched into a ditch at any moment. I know it's a different car, but the C looks great, is (reasonably) practical and provides a massive grin factor whenever I drive it. I'm going to re-visit those roads on Saturday I think....

Sorry, simple answer, at least a couple of years unless I'm forced to sell. :-)

Had mine for 8 years. No major expense until the last 6 months!!! BUT I'm happy to sort what needs sorting and have no intention of selling (unless I'm given news of some major expense i.e. £1,000s)

 

Like TomB I've just got back from a works journey. I have to use a hire car if it is over 100 miles, had a 1.6 Astra today and hated it. No doubt there are some lovely cars to drive out there but I'm not interested in paying £1,000s for something that will depreciate like mad and is owned by 1,000s of others.

 

Or maybe I'm just too emotionally attached to mine??

owned the valver for about 18 months and i've had the vr6 for roughly 3, part of the reason I changed cars was because I wanted a car I could keep for a while and be happy with, breaking the 'car a year' habbit I'd been persuing previously. I loved my 16v, but the vr6 is something even more special and I'm resonably prepared to spend cash on it to keep it going (not that I'll be happy about it!). I've never driven anything else quite like a corrado, so confidence inspiring yet easy to drive and comfortable, mix that with a hefty wedge of power and good looks and I cant think of anything else I'd rather own (within reason).
