clumpy1 11 Posted August 21, 2014 Wee vid of the my old VRT (Gar's) on a wet trackday. Around 1m 30sec in or something. I backed off as the guy in front pulled out in my way and a nice pop of flame. Was doing that all day apparently. Note boost was turned down due to conditions and Sub was a time attack thing. Yeah B5's price have not changed in the last few years. Probably getting harder to get a good one now though as a few have fallen into some hands that dont look after them. If you get a standard one budget on another £5kish to get it to a reliable 450-500bhp. FYI here is a comprison between my cam'd VR, the VRT and the RS all on the same dyno. Rs weighs a lot more but doesnt half haul ass. Would be nice to compare the two on the road at the same time, dont think there would be much in it in all honesty. Have you got any of in the dry? coullstar 0 Posted August 21, 2014 Lol, I did three trackdays and all were wet true to form with Knockhill. It went reasonably well to be honest.

clumpy1 11 Posted August 21, 2014 So what's the current going rate for a Stealth Turbo then? Got to weigh up whether it's worth sacrificing my mrs and kids for... £4k+ I believe Jamie.
Jamie 1 Posted August 21, 2014 £4k??? That's insane - you can pick them up off eBay for £700 and they're probably just the same
clumpy1 11 Posted August 21, 2014 I think that is including other work etc
Jim 2 Posted August 21, 2014 Well one is a cheap eBay kit, and the other is a drive in / drive out fully fitted solution! Not exactly comparable!
Sean_Jaymo 0 Posted August 21, 2014 I'd spend 4k at stealth everytime instead of risking an eBay turbo popping and potentially munching the engine.
g0ldf1ng3r 15 Posted August 21, 2014 Well one is a cheap eBay kit, and the other is a drive in / drive out fully fitted solution! Not exactly comparable! i saw n3p's several times when it was being turbo'd at stealth, my VR was there at the same time, & the amount of work vince & co put in is staggering!! plus you also need to cost up BIG brakes, wheels to fit said BIG brakes, custom exhaust with no cat (as vince says the standard VR one is far too restrictive when putting a turbo on), & an LSD of some form & that is all depending on how healthy your engine is when it goes in as there are likely to be a host of other parts which need to be renewed at the same time
Craig 0 Posted August 21, 2014 As said it depends how involved you want to be, yes you could charge a VR for less with cheaper parts from eBay, sacrifice a lot of your own time and effort and dealing with the issues you face OR place it in the hands of Stealth who have the reputable parts, the know how and turn up and collect your beast of a new car! either solution can yield awesome results, I guess its how capable you are and the size of your wallet! sexybourbon 0 Posted August 21, 2014 I dont think anyone saw jamies sarcasm there lol , there are cheap kits on ebay for seven hundred quid !! I think the 4 grand is basic , add a clutch and the other parts and you will soon be at 5000 Personally i think your best doing every last little bit to the car first then once your fone and happy send it in to get the final touches on it No way id ever go any other way than stealths drive in drive out aproach now not after going out in nicks 430 bhp monster

No way on earth I'd try it though
sexybourbon 0 Posted August 21, 2014 Do you have a link jamie ?? Eould quite like to read how good / bad some parts was and how it all went
Jamie 1 Posted August 21, 2014 I won't put the link up on here mate it's not really fair on Vince to do so. In all seriousness if (fingers crossed when) I'm in the market for a turbo I would be going to Stealth. The only thing that puts me off doing it is all the associated costs that could soon mount up. Well that and tearing myself up on whether I'd rather spend the money on a Skyline :)

Even OE setups have looked poorly thought out in comparison. I've gotta say though with this level of workmanship, they leave absolutely nothing to chance, and the bill was the best part of double that. Never once heard a bad word about them either which in comparison to some very highly thought of specialists, is an absolute first. If your wallet will stretch that far, or even if it'll be a hard stretch, I wouldn't seriously consider any other option than going there.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 22, 2014 The main problem with Chinese turbos is they're not very well balanced and the bearings are rubbish quality. Leave them as they are and yeah, it won't last long  However, if you were to send your Chinese job off to somewhere like Turbo Dynamics to get it fitted with decent bearings and properly balanced, you'll still be coming in waaaaaaaaay cheaper than a genuine Garrett and it'll be a decent-ish unit. I prefer the real McCoy myself, but there are options to suit all wallets. As with everything Chinese, they will build to the quality you're prepared to pay for. iPhones are made over there don't forget, and the vast majority of other premium consumer electronics. They're just good at copying and reading the market. They've seen a market for cheap turbo kits and have filled it :) If anything, I would say the country to avoid for turbo kits is America. Now they really do knock out some crap, jesus. Stick to people like Schimmel, AEM, USRT and some of 034 Motorsport's stuff is OK.
