People who like to think their cars are great but aren't.

Recommended Posts

Had to scrap my van this week, so when the scrap dealer came to pick it up, I thought I'd ask him if he was breaking any Rados at the moment so I could have first dibs on spares. The conversation went thus;

Him: Why do you want to know that?

Me: (pointing to my Rado parked on the drive): because I have a Corrado

Him: You don't want one of them, they're sh*t. I've got a Rover 200 VI spec and the other day I pantsed a VR6 on the duel carriageway.

Me: Really? Even though your car only has a 1.8 litre engine?

Him: Yeah. You should get yourself one. Much faster than a VR6

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this matter!

:epicfail:  You gotta love people like that, completely blinded!

you can imagine someone cruising along in their VR enjoying the drive and bloke red lining his rover 1.8 to pass him. Genius.

Was the 200 Vi that horrid thing with the bright orange bumper inserts? :pukeright:

Bloody good engine though, to be fair. They were quick!! Rover 200s aren't much over a tonne too IIRC?

There's no way it would paste a VR6, but it wouldn't be a dot in the mirror either.

The Rover with the orange bumper insert was indeed the 200Vi BRM, the orange and green was obviously to mirror the old BRM colour scheme.

They were actually a pretty quick car, the 1.8 had about 140 bhp and the chassis was pretty well sorted, one of the first production FWD cars (think only the Series 1 Escort RS Turbo being the first I think) to have a LSD fitted as standard

The 200 series Rovers were regarded as being decent cars in their times, the K series engine was highly advanced for its time, they were not remotely as good as a Corrado but probably better than most other cars in their class

It's a bit ridiculous to come out with a comment like that really though.. The Corrado has nothing left to prove - it's long been heralded as one of the best cars to have ever come from VW, one of the best FWD cars ever made and is already well on the way to taking classic status. I may be being horrendously narrow minded and bias here, but I don't think ANYONE who's knowledgeable about good cars would pick any Rover over a Corrado frankly!

I have owned a couple of rovers before my VR the 1.8VVC fitted to them was a quick engine. Lotus didn't end up using it for no reason.

Parkers list it as 0-60 mph 7.5 s for the BRM. Not bad for a rover and would prob catch out a unsuspecting driver.

I like them orange grill and all and concidered getting one That or the Jordan Civic :o

Saying that though Don't think I would swap my VR6 for one :)

HAHA, oh dear oh dear. Looks like someone knows the square root of F-all about cars. Someone should really hunt this idiot down and show him some humility.

More to the point, who was driving the vr6 that let a rover overtake you?

I dunno sometimes you just keep cruising and giggle at people trying to race you in shit cars. I must admit I've mellowed a lot since I blew away a pair of chavs on shitty bikes at a set of lights as they were revving up and squeezing between me and the other cars. I totally smoked them and was laughing my ass off until I saw the blue lights behind me a few mins later... The chavs then went past me and saw me getting a telling off so I guess they had the last laugh!

Sometimes it's better to just be mature and smile cos you're driving a rado and they aren't!

It sounds to me like the scrappy man was pulling your plonker.

And you utterly fell for it...

i have found i have nothing to prove in my car. i've had a couple of people try and race me and i've put my foot down and left it in 5th at about 30-40 and had no problems keeping up. if i wanted to leave them i'd drop it a gear but these days it really isn't worth racing someone you know is slower because its soo easy to lose your license.

Yeah its like grandpa is trying to be hip driving one of them. Its still a Rover 200 regardless how fast it is. Same with those MG zr things. My sister had one and it was made like a tin can had and the ugliest interior ive ever seen in a car.

Can you point out where in my original post I said I believed him?
