dragon green 5 Posted August 14, 2010 Had a stone hit the nearside bottom edge of my screen, cracking it, No problems, screen is covered by my insurance. Ring the freephone number up last Monday, give all the details, told them mine had the green tint. Be with you Friday afternoon, have you anywhere in the dry ? Having a large carport i took the Friday afternoon off, Armed with new scuttle clips and grommets, made my way home Friday dinner time,Two o`clock he turns up in an AA windscreen van, goes up to my car and rips the exterior trim out ! Tearing it into three in the process ! I wont be able to do the screen, rubbers had it mate,i will have to order a new trim !! Are they still available asks i ? and have you ever done a Corrado before ? Yep,can still get the trims, and i done one before. Great says i,cause this is the SIXTH screen that's going to be replaced in ten years ! and i dont want this to leak like the last one. Cut a long story short.a different fitter turned up Wednesday, wrong screen and no trim ! car was left at my house, with good ol`mum sitting waiting for him. Arrangements where made over the phone, coming Friday pm at my place of work, Friday pm phone call,i cant find you,so i talked him in like a pilotless aircraft, A third different fitter,my first question, have you done a Corrado before ? Yep mate done a few, perhaps he`s older then he looks thinks i, Screens out,and then the heavens open up ! Biblical proportions, You going to put a tent round this mate ? We dont carry them ! After about an hour his finished(or so he thinks) i had to show him how the scuttle clips worked, and pointed out my TT wipers shouldnt be parked on the scuttle ! After making him clean the black mastic of the wings and roof,he mentions the trim might not be stuck due to the damp weather, This morning arrive at work, trim not stuck at all ! mastic still on A pillars !! And screen looks like its slipped down about 15mm !!! Gap between rubber and ROOF ! That explains why it was whistling at 60mph Irate phone call later, they will be out Tuesday a.m. to rectify, that will be 15 days then! My moneys on screen number seven being fitted, Before anybody asks, iam insured with Brentacre ! rant over ,
STU175 0 Posted August 14, 2010 i used to be a mobile windscreen fitter and would never have mine changed mobile. :nono: take it to the depot and your more likely to get a decent job done. 3 reasons for this- 1. managers etc will be about so they will take more care with job 2. usually the more experienced guys end up in workshop when they have had enough being mobile 3. mobile fitters will be trying to rush through jobs to get home early, workshop fitters will work slow so they dont get given any more jobs sad but thats how it usually works! Jim 2 Posted August 14, 2010 I don't know what it is with Corrado's but virtually every windscreen replacement job turns out to be a nightmare. There have been several horror stories posted on here about fitters who can only be described as being utterly incompetent. Good luck getting it all sorted :(
dragon green 5 Posted August 14, 2010 Had a bad experience when i took it into a depot! It must have been day release at the local nutty bin ! dropped it off in the morning, went to pick it up at the end of the day, they told me that was the second screen they put in,as they broke the first one,The screen was CROOKED ! Mastic on my dash ,leather seats, the scuttle and A trims were unrecognisable! I lost the plot big time, result a third screen was put in the following day, new scuttle (still available then) Atrims redone, and the manager gave me a lift home. That was RAC windscreens
robrado974 1 Posted August 14, 2010 i had the same problems it was a nightmare . :(
Supercharged 2 Posted August 14, 2010 Errr - yeah never get it done mobile, needs 4 hours for the bonding to set as well before it's driven. Autoglass did a fairly decent job of mine but I got them to order a genuine screen, all the clips, trim and seals and took out the interior trim myself. If yours dropped then they didn't use the blocks or didn't let it set properly - monkeys!
fla 9 Posted August 14, 2010 i really dont trust garages at all any more and get my cars serviced at a friends. i prefer to tackle other jobs as far as possible myself so i'm wondering if there's any way of doing this yourself? the 'seal' around my screen is loose, seems like it was replaced in the past. dragon green 5 Posted August 17, 2010 The fitter rang me this morning,to find out what the problem was ! Long story short, the manager rings me back, going to do it Thursday late afternoon at my house, And he is sending a specialist to do it ! Who the :censored: was the first fitter ! screen leaks from the drivers top right corner, straight onto my legs !! Number seven screen is going in Thursday  Is seven supposed to be lucky ? robrado974 1 Posted August 17, 2010 bleedin ell i thought the 3 attemps they made on mine was bad but seven ?! good luck mate hope it turns out right this time :)
firecracker 0 Posted August 17, 2010 dang seven screens?! i made the AA bloke take it out telling him my cat could of done better,i removed the scuttle, wipers and covered the dash and seats when he refitted the next one and took half day off work to assist him. same firm done the rear side on my 6n polo, it was so bad that i asked him if he threw it in from over the road, again another day off work and refitted, can it be so hard to do,if i was you and if possible take a day off and help him.......i wait to hear how it went, good luck
dragon green 5 Posted August 17, 2010 This is the seventh screen in ten years ! I did have three in one day by RAC screens ! this will be the 2nd attempt by the AA, and yes i will be there in attendance, trouble is you have a freephone number with the insurance company, and it goes straight through to AA windscreens ! last year Brentacre were with National windscreens :D now they are with AA :(
Ben-B 0 Posted August 17, 2010 I had a treat of a window fitter from a well-respected company (who shall remain nameless for legal reasons)... although to help you out, he has a colleague named "Gavin from ManualGlass" Anyway my rear windscreen got smashed when they tried to nick the 52kg sub I had in the boot (too heavy so they gave up). I ring them up and it's covered by insurance, just pay the £70 excess. So Gavin's mate rings me up and asks if it's the SXi+ model, with the factory-tinted rear screen. I said no but I did have the old one tinted, so he said he'd just put down that it was. Then when he's there, fitting it, I ask him to have a look at a chip on the front windscreen, in the wiper-sweep. He duly obliges and says that he can fill it with that resin but it'll be visible still, and distracting as it's right in the line of sight. He told me that occasionally, when filling in chips, they can crack... in which case they have to replace the screen at their cost. So he hammer-fists the windscreen and low and behold it cracks. So off he goes, picks up a front windscreen for me and replaces that too. Cost me £70 but I got a tinted rear screen (retinting a clear one would have cost me £60 at my local tinting place anyway) and a brand new crystal clear front one. Guest Posted August 17, 2010 You don't always have to arrange replacement windscreens from the 'insurance end'. Most windscreen fitters will take you insurance details and arrange reimbursement from them for you. That way you can go to a recomended fitter / company (though it is the actual fitter that is doing the work that is the important part of the equasion and not the company as a whole) and get a decent job done. As posted up a few times here we have had a few screen fitted in our 'fleet' by a guy in Sheffield and we would not hesitate to recomend him to anyone interested. STU175 0 Posted August 17, 2010 should start a "recommend a good windscreen fitter" thread LOL i can recommend ben, ian and paul from autoglass, ipswich LOL :D
volksworld13 0 Posted August 17, 2010 yes can you start a good and bad windscreen fitter, and highlight which areas they are in,it would help alot of ppl out, and avoid windscreen bodges, it kills me everytime i hear another story , ive been there and its the most frustrating thing :brickwall: :mad2:
dragon green 5 Posted August 19, 2010 The so called specialist turned up today ! But he was man enough to admit he had NEVER done a Corrado before  Admitted he didnt fancy doing it ! Another fitter coming out Tuesday, That will be fitter number five, keeping my fingers crossed it doesnt rain,as it drips from top corner drivers side, onto my leg ! Anything over sixty it whistles like the window is slightly ajar !
James. 9 Posted August 19, 2010 It drips from top corner drivers side, onto my leg ! That's exactly what mine does. Mines been on going for nearly three months and still not fixed. Rang them (again) for the umpteenth time and was promised a call back from the manager within the hour. No surprise to say I didn't receive a call. I am really frustrated by this issue and am billing them for new underlay. By the way. I'm talking about Autowindscreens Hope you get your issues resolved quickly and leak/whistle free. volksworld13 0 Posted August 19, 2010 underlay is obsolete from vw,
dragon green 5 Posted August 24, 2010 The fifth (5) fitter turned up this afternoon, nice fella, commented what a crap job of the previous screen fitment, took out previous screen, cleaned up aperture, and put ANOTHER screen in ! then went to put the new exterior trim in,and that's when the problems started ! New trim has a different profile then my old trim, and subsequently doesn't fit properly ! Still a gap between rubber and roof ! :( Bet they wished they didn't throw my old trim away now :cuckoo: On a good note, they have ordered another new trim, and coming next Tuesday to fit it ! He reckons he has stopped the leak and whistle, but most probably will have to put another screen in to fit the new trim ! Over a month now ! Patience wearing very very thin :censored:
volksworld13 0 Posted August 24, 2010 you should demand a genuine winsdscreen to be fitted!! this will fit perfect
dragon green 5 Posted August 25, 2010 It still LEAKS ! Managed to get hold of the manager today, someone out tomorrow, with new trim and screen, fitter number six
Guest Posted August 25, 2010 I don't know why you are still getting mobile fitters to come out. Get the car to their depot and get someone in authority to watch over a fully qualified fitter then check the quality of the job before leaving. The sealant will need a few hours to properly set before you drive the car as the bonded in windscreen is a componant of the structure of the car. And if they still can't get it right when in the depot with the right staff on the job I would suggest it is time to take it to a company that does have staff that can do it right. I'll admit that getting them to agree to pay for someone else might be difficult but from the service you have had I can't see them having a leg to stand on. Cutting out a windscreen time and time again is setting yourself up for damage to be done to the paint on the lip where the screen sits. Once that's damaged and not properly treated you will have rust problems under the sealant that will grow un-noticed for years.
dragon green 5 Posted August 25, 2010 As in the thread,i had nothing but grief when i took it to the depot ! they broke two screens,so ended up putting tthree in ,one day ! it had to have a new scuttle,A trims and front seats proffesionally cleaned ! As i have already payed my excess to this company, and they are completley mobile,if i go somewhere else its going to cost me more money.
