VAG F1 team?

Just heard Martin Brundle mention the possibility of an Audi (VAG) F1 team for next season with Stefano Domenicali heading it up. It's the first I've heard about it, but could be a real benefit with R&D probably having a big uplift in the group, and eventually finding it's way into the mass market? What are your thoughts?

Sounds great if it comes off . I will stick my neck out here though and end up being shot down . I can't seem to get into F1 . WRC is more my bag . I think it's great to watch although because of the stages , you don't get to see the whole thing , unlike F1 . I regularly watch the VW team on the net .

Would be great, would be nice if it was the VW F1 team as I would like Audi to stay good in the endurance

Heard the same rumour a couple of days back, though believe they wouldn't be starting until the 2016 season. Would certainly add an interesting dimension to F1, no doubt about it. The total combined engineering might of the VAG group is quite substantial now.

Theres gonna be all sorts of rumours going round at the moment, especially with 2 teams so far and possibly another 3 on the way out

would make sense as they dominated rally raid so moved into rally and are dominating LMP and doing well in touring so a move to F1 makes sense

Well Bernie said at the press conference that there could be as little as 14 cars running next year, but the US track principle said the US public are not as excited as the cars sound so dull, to which Bernie hinted that there could be another major engine shake-up in the next couple of years with a return to big N/A power plants and less emphasis on noise levels as "its not f1" ...........

Looks like VAG are just buying a uk based F1 team like Mercedes did, although the powertrain will be German I suppose.

In these times when production sports cars can record top speeds of 200 - 250 MPH why do we need processional F1 with "exciting" pitstops?

Have you witnessed an F1 car going round a corner in person? Its simply amazing what they can do. I dont mind it but agree its not the most exciting to watch especially on TV. I went to the Hungarian Grand Prix this year, my first for almost 15years and its was a great day.

I think that Audi/Vag need something new to do as they have done everything else. I believe it will be under the Audi brand though and not VW due to the AutoUnion name. I dont know how far it goes back but remember the money allocation is influenced by historic wins for a team registered name.

 

Oh and I loved the sound they made, its much better in person.

Yeah, changing tyres in 3 seconds is proper edge of your seat stuff isn't it. Personally, I feel it's an inherently dull sport because of the cars being so fragile and all the stupid rules. It's worse then bloody golf for anal rules and regulations. If the cars were more stout and the rules relaxed a bit, there could be some proper bullying in the corners for a bit of excitement. Get rid of that corrupt little dwarf and replace him with someone driven by sport instead of smarming sponsors.

 

If I had my way, there would be 1 rule: It's every man for himself, just get to the finish line however you see fit. You drivers are being paid millions, after all. Earn ya f'ckin keep.

As much as I agree that watching that escort is far more interesting than an f1 car, the whole point of racing is to cover a certain distance faster than your opponent. Drifting isn't the fastest way anywhere and as a result you end up with cars cornering on rails and becoming processional. F1 has become a victim of its own ability.

 

Maybe introducing random jumps and loop the loops may make it more entertaining.

 

I personally love the strategy and engineering that makes the sport. But that's just me.

It's not just you. I like that F1 is basically as fast as it gets. Top speed is only part of the story - massive acceleration and deceleration, cornering forces, and only the smallest margins for error. It's really about the only motorsport I watch with any real interest.

 

Don't get me wrong, I wish it was far less commercial and far less of a media scrum - I get sick of cut aways to various F1 drivers glamorous girlfriends and Rolex logos EVERYWHERE.. and I have no time for Bernie Eccleson and his cronies, but I admire the engineering of the cars a great deal.

It's a shame that there's so much politics involved in F1 at times and also that money buys you a seat nowadays, not talent alone. That said, I think this season has been one of the most exciting for years - maybe 10+ years. There's been fantastic racing throughout the field - and overtaking!! lol - and whilst Mercedes have creamed it like Red Bull used to, both Mercedes drivers are up there so there's a race up front and a race behind in the rest of the pack. I've loved it this year!

I love rallying as well but all Im saying is dont dismiss it until you have seen what they are capable off. The "racing" element is very rare I agree but as a spectacle the cars are worth it IMO. Go see for yourself.

ive been abstaining on this thread & just enjoying reading as i like lots of motorsport & they all have their own unique viewing/following advantages & disadvantages

 

however i feel it timely to pose......should i throw NASCAR into the mix here

I'm a big racing fan over many formats. But for me, if you want big plums and hard racing, the most exciting is motorbikes. Some of the motoGP can be a bit of a procession but the British Superbikes and the Supersports championships are so close it often comes down to last laps!

Agreed! I've trackdayed a lot of the BSB tracks on my blade and to go round say cadwell park at their pace takes some big kahunas......
