Career change post 30.

Recommended Posts

Liking the idea of a corrado rescue centre and museum. We could buy up all the low miles original examples and create a very unique corrado based investment program!

Logic says use my accountancy to do something but as noted, working on your own in a room for 40hrs a week takes a certain kind of person. Also, I've been in industry for the past 7 years so I'm a bit out of practice for preparing individual accounts and tax returns etc. I could do it but might not be quick enough at the start and would require an element of revision of the various rules and regulations.

Still a possible though

Goldfinger if you want some Saturday work you can come to work with me lol bit of a drive though. Tbh its a whole different work helping a mate do the odd resto but to do it day in day out like I do does suck alot of the fun out of it.

i guess it is like most things, when you do it for a job everything can get tedious or boring

a rado rescue centre sounds mint lol

& as we all know from mechanics bills - most jobs take enough time to warrant some hefty pennies

Best of luck Mic. Half thinking of doing a course myself. Sick of being stuck behind a desk!

You have to do something for about 8hrs a day, although people say you should have a job you love etc, its not always possible. I don't mind my job but i often think i'd rather be doing something else. I just shut off from work as soon as 5pm comes and don't let it come into my own time. I'll never stay late or come in early and also won't come in on a saturday if asked.

I think some jobs can seem appealing but after doing them everyday for a few years it'll all become just a job to fill those 8hrs a day

I'd say learn to code, but that is also desk intensive. I'm considering becoming a mechanic to get out of the desk.

i agree with that sentiment Jim - a job should be simply that & not force all of 'go the extra mile' horse sh1t.

your choice of retrain would be good for our rado rescue centre :) lol

Currently a qualified accountant but thinking I'd like to try a trade... Wanted to be an engineer as a youngster but kind of fell into accountancy.

This made me smile as I'm in exactly the same position, except I already resigned from my accountancy job last September and have been unemployed since December .. I'd finally had enough of KPMG so jacked it in.

Sadly I'm finding it hard to really get any enthusiasm for anything else that doesn't require going back to uni. I was hoping to start up something of my own, like you I enjoy practical work, but I dont think I really have an entrepreneurial streak sadly. Currently looking at going 'into industry' as the recruiters put it, found a local engineering firm that make specialist turbo parts that are recruiting .. perhaps they'll let me get out on the shop floor sometime

What he said ^^ there are parts of my job I love , parts I hate. Doing it for 8 hours 5 days plus a week kind of kills all the joy.

Im an office worker . Probably why I love messing with cars in free time as it's so different . If I was working on Ford focus es all day working the flat rate system I'd probably get bored and not fancy working on my own project s

I understand wanting to change career though , sometime it's just what the brain needs .

How did you get on Mic_vr?

Well…. So I’m still at the same place but life has at least changed somewhat.

Basically decided to speak to my Director about it, and essentially he said he didn’t want me to go so what else would I like to do… which was unexpected!

Told him I wanted to be more involved in the business and less involved in the monthly grind of creating accounts.

Then after I’d explained it all they created a new role for me, Systems & Project Accountant, and recruited a replacement for my old role. It’s still based on my accountancy qualification but instead of cooking the books I’m out and about in all areas of the business from stores to R&D getting involved in a load of control work and project implementation. Another good step is I now report directly to him so I’m a bit more autonomous and able to just go out and find new things to get involved in.

It’s not perfect but it’s made a change and I feel most days are different enough, and with enough on the horizon that it’s not going to be boring anytime soon. There’s even talk of me going to help out in some of the other offices but I’m not getting my hopes up to much on that front.

If nothing else I've realised that the guys at the top in their big offices aren't always as unapproachable as people sometimes think. Really glad I talked it through with various people, including you lovely folks, and it made me be more proactive with my employer.

Mic - Sorry sooooo late to this party. !!

I do note you have taken another role within your current employment - which of course is great if it aids your enjoyment of your work.

I find even with working for myself - I carry out a role of Manager in many of my clients places of work.

Mainly due to so many running their businesses as a corner shop when they are anything but. I am involved in Hiring and Firing, Reviews, Company Direction etc etc etc.let alone all the Accounting items.

The only thing I would say is - Even this gets tiring after a while and the need for change becomes very strong.

I have recently reduced my work to 3.5 days a week, so I can follow new ideas where the need is not to earn but to enjoy life and if I earn too than bonus.

I am however older than you (sadly) please do review this in a few years though, I am sure in your line of work like me - you do have forecasts and plans for yourself.

I strongly wish - I had changed my line of work years ago - but kept being held back - Clients not wanting me to go, offers of more work coming up etc.

Another idea as an alternative - would be an Engineer - there is a huge shortage of them not only in the UK but worldwide and it can be lucrative too - especially in the Oil industry.

I do hope you find your new ish work/project keeps you interested though.

I think we can all take note of what you say Wendy, I sometimes wished Id changed career completely but have had a wife and family to support so its not been possible.

For the Oil/Gas industry its not too lucrative in the UK at the moment, this is the industry I've been in for the past 16 years and the last 2 to 3 have been horrendous. Its showing signs of improvement but will still be quiet for the next 12 months or so. At the moment, the work is currently in Kazakhstan.

Hope all goes well for you Mic.

Wendy where are these engineer jobs?! I'm a design engineer and I enjoy my job but hate everyone around me, always seems that everyone is out to get us engineers instead of trying to make money for the business, spend most of my time fixing cock ups or defending myself

Very true. There is too much control in the hands of buyers as opposed to engineers. That's why everything is going down the tubes.
