Ah I meant the part number for the V5 starter motor - like the idea of having a bit more oomph to start. Will definitely give QX a go for the alternator though, thanks for the tip.

 

Noticed you'd used Amos motors for some bits, never heard of them before but might give them a shout as been struggling to source a replacement radiator support.

 

There OK mate he has been known to be bad at posting, worth going to visit him to be honest if your up that way. Little fuzz is worth a shot on here.

Well I read it all and I'm impressed! Good job mate, I relate to your line of thought... What you've done is exactly the way I'm going to approach my newly acquired Corrado. I want to have the feeling of driving a new car too and I'm patient enough to take the time and to not compromise the work that needs to be done to make it this way. I wish there was a good garage here like Stealth Racing where I could go too but I will have to do all that work myself which is fine. I'll get to know better my car this way I guess. But it will take a couple of years too...

Your long list of things you've done is a what I have in mind to do. May I ask you a few questions? I'm curious to know where you found these and what you've got? Like the steering rack, the power steering pump, those stainless straps for the gas tank and finally that VR6 logo for the front grill?

The steering rack got refurbished by a UK company, power steering pump you can get off ebay I imagine but my mechanic sourced that so not sure.

 

The stainless steel tank straps are from ebay a UK seller that handbuilds them and are for 70 liters tank (check yours is that size as there is variation throughout the Corrado range)

Keyo, who was it that refurbished your steering rack? Though I've never had an issue with mine, its currently out whilst I'm doing the subframe refurb and it'll be just my luck for it to go once back on where it's been on the bench dry so would prefer to get it done. Cheers mate

Bit of a funny story with mine to be honest. my power steering pipe the one that goes through the front panel all got powder coated, any way to cut a long story short some sand was was left in the pipe from blasting and when the power sytem was fitted to the car again the sand got through the system and f..... up the pump and rack. Whole system had to be stripped and flush and had to get a new pump and rack.

 

Moral of the story thouroughly check any powder coated parts that come in contact with internal fluids !!!

I was asking about your power steering rack because like you I want to remove everything to start fresh and like Sean as a preventive maintenance I think it would be smart to refurbish it while I'm there. To be honest I'm almost thinking of doing the swap for manual steering. I had that before and I liked the feeling of it, feels more "grounded" to the road if that makes sense... Although it wasn't on a Corrado so maybe it wouldn't be the same feeling.

Yes I do have a 70L tank, it's an Euro 95 VR6. I looked under today and my original straps are not even rusted, pretty lucky!? But I'll keep the link, I found a guy in UK and one in Germany, seller in UK is way cheaper...

Thanks mate. Any idea what it costs? The cheapest ones I've seen on eBay are from Germany and about £250 taking return into account. Not sure if it's worth taking the risk as there was nothing wrong with mine on removal, and I do have a spare from a MK3 Golf as well.

Looking over the Stealth receipt this morning it shows £230.00 for Steering rack and £97.00 for steering pump.

 

I only changed mine as I had to but I suppose anything over 20 years old it will give you peace of mind refurbing if you have the rack off the car.

Been looking at some BBS RZ the BMW version and unfortunately they are 4 stud which is perfect for a 4 stud Corrado. Have seen the BMW version on a 16V rado and they looked the business !

 

Corrado stock BBS RZ 4x100 15 6J (4stud) looks like a none split version of the BBS RM (including centre caps )

BMW E30 stock BBS RZ 4x100 15 7J (4stud) looks like a none split version of BBS RS (including centre caps) also has straighter spokes. All round a much better looking alloy wheel IMO . The centre BMW circle cap can be changed out for a BBS.

They also made the above BMW RZ in a 15 5 stud for an E30 M3 but a stud pattern of 120 x 5 . So no good for a Rado VR6 5x100

 

So in my plight I have managed to find these.

 

Ronal LSX. 16 7J 5 x 100 optional offset 25-50

 

Quality German company that actually now own Speedline alloys and are OEM manufacturer for alloy wheels for BMW etc. (no cheap knock off from China). They make another version which is a popular mod for the MK2 golf the Ronal LS which is 4 stud and GTI engineering used this alloy all the time on their upgrades. Ronal has history back to the 60s and also Racing. Looks like BBS got all the glory.

 

So the Ronal LSX is described as the modern version of the LS with 5x100 and 16.

 

Question is has anyone got any pictures of these on a VR6 because they are ticking all the boxes and £566.00 a set so not ridiculous money. They look like the BMW RZ so just what I was after.

There is actually a stock RZ style BBS rim for the VR6 - I've got 3 of them in my shed. They are more or less the same as the 4 stud G60 BBS, the main issue is they won't clear any callipers larger than stock - 288s are a no no because of the shape of the inside of the rim. Also the spokes are slightly curved towards the centre, so they sit proud of the rim, wheras you might be looking for the flat ones.

 

I guess you could shave some metal off the callipers or use spacers.

 

The were fitted to VR6 Mk3 Golfs before they went to the larger brakes, and there are plenty of advertising photos of them on Corrado VR6 - they may even have been standard on the US SLC.

That's whole point though Fen if you look at the BMW version it has different style centre cap ( RS ) and straighter slimmer spokes, all together a much better alloy wheel IMO, also 1J wider and a wider lip. these Ronals are 16 as well

Agreed - I too prefer the look of the flat face versus dome (I just discovered these are the words to use while doing a bit of research :)) Your last choice looks nice - although not gone on the centre cap, think it draws too much attention to itself.

I love BBS Rs so I love the centre caps. If you look they have a lock for the caps as well which is a bonus as these get robbed a lot.

 

Would be great if the M3 E30 had a stud pattern of 5x100 not (5x120) would just poke out the BMW cap and replace with a BBS , although they are 15 and 16 is what I like on a Rado. M3 also has a one unit cap that you cannot pop out for a BBS.

When you mean the centre cap do you mean the ronal black circle or the whaffle. I do think the black circle could be a better design. Im just wondering if it pops out for a VW or BBS badge.

All ready got some of the RS771 but in 6.5J - think I just prefer the old skool 4 stud styles - also big fan of the Sebrings.

 

Or if you posted because of the BBS RS split rims on the group photo yes I like them but don;t like the added lip just the way they came out the box. Oh also like don't like the price tag they sell for upwards of 2k ha.

Yeah, one of the members on here from Ireland has a set on his Storm. There was also a set of 6 that has been used as intended (proper racing) for sale over here last year, but were advertised at well over €1000, needing refurb.

 

If you do a bit of research you'll come across an old US group buy where they went direct to Speedline and had a larger version made to order - but that was a while ago.

Bit of an update with the car.

 

As many of you know my car was up for sale last year. I pulled out of a deal with a buyer for 9K and then he upped it to 10K to get me to release the car. However I thought it was not the right thing to do as my car always drank a little bit of oil but as the process of sale was going on I could start to smell a burning oil. I spoke to Vince and he advised that it would be a mixture of failing vale seals and ovulated cylinders, at this point I told the seller unfortunately the car was not for sale ( I just said I wanted to keep the car but the truth of the matter was I would not sell a car and ask for good money unless it was justified (treat folks how you would like to be treated).

 

The good news is Vince has purchased the larger pistons as the car is going up to 3 liters and a complete engine rebuild this year with new pistons. bores - bottom and top, chains etc.. Each piston will be measured precisely and block bored out accordingly to each piston- will be precise engineered. If I do ever sell the car this will be added onto to the valuation as this will be one of the most sorted VR6 on the market by the time its complete- however I cant see me letting go of the car in the near future. Schrick will also be sent to be professionally polished.

 

Other recent works.

 

Battery trays sanded down and painted/Lacquer.

Insulation

150 mm spoonfed splitter and new bolts and Iron to fit.

Sourced complete new bumper heat shield, bumper brackets front and rear and bolts and plastic clips and getting the bumper irons powder coated at some point- also inspect inside these areas whilst off for body work condition.

Sourced complete new wiper mech and motor just missing one link and one nipple.

Headlight metallised and new OE adjusters - uprated loom refurbished.

Various engine bay brackets powder coated.

 

 

 

Have ordered a new windscreen seal the one that meets the roof, had bad wind noise at high speed in the cabin, noticed that the seal was coming loose in places , pulled the seal off and the good news is the surround is clean and rot free- looks like an aftermarket seal so ordered a OE VW seal from Heritage.

 

Top of gear knob pattern fell off and stuck it back on with glue, warning do not do this it bubbled through and destroyed the shift pattern decal, only use double sided tape !!!!

 

Have an intermittent spoiler at the moment, I believe it is the Relay so trying to source a used one as the 60mph relay is obsolete, or as mentioned mech needs a clean out and lube.

 

It really is none stop and a huge expense but believe Im not far away to having a fully restored Corrado. For anyone cotemplating a full renovation of a Corrado to the lengths I have gone to I would budget between 13- 15K . Would I have undertook this task If I had known, probably not to be honest. However when complete the car will have an uprated engine block good for +100 K, VDO gauges , Schrick VGI , black leather and desirable magic black paint scheme , so go find me another ??? Just need the Recaros front seats.
