As some of you may know I hit some engine trouble on a trackday last week, found out the damage today and its not good. :( Big end shell bearing? on cylinder 6 knackered, probably would have got away with replacing the shells if it wasnt for the rest of the damage. Big end shell bearing on cylinder 4 also knackered, but worse, scoring the crank and the piston has also badly scored the cylinder bore. The cause, oil starvation, even though the oil was still above minimum on the dipstick, vr owners take note: Always keep the oil topped up to near max.... So, what now? Option 1. Find a 2nd hand 2.9 engine and swap it over with my cams. Plusses - Relatively cheap if I can find an engine. Downside - Engine will be unknown and may not last too long, especially as the car will be used for trackdays again. Option 2. Rebuild the block by going to 3.0 and finding a crank. Plusses - mmmm, 3.0 Downsides - Expensive and would need another remap, I just had one done at the start of the month. Option 3. The cheap rebuild, find a crank, 2.8 block and a single piston, bore out the block to 2.9 spec and rebuild using the rest of my existing parts, replacing bits only where neccessary. Plusses - Again, relatively cheap. Downsides - Reusing a lot of old parts, will it last? So, what to do. If anyone can give me rough costs on what they think the above options are likely to cost, especially the 3.0 option please post up, also if you have any other suggestions or comments im listening.

The exaust manifold wont clear the brake servo on rhd cars, someone on http://www.vr6oc.com has just fitted a kinectic motorsports kit and had to fit a remote brake servo, sounded like a bit of a hassle.

Stuck with the speedlines in the end as it drives so well with them on and I go through tyres pretty quick, so im better off with 15"s. Heres the most recent power graph from Star P, drove fantastic for the 5 days it was running but then it died at Oulton Park on the 12th, something gone wrong with the bottom end, only part of the engine untouched. :( Cars at Awesome GTI at the moment as I didnt have any breakdown recovery so couldnt get it back to Scotland. Waiting patiently for them to take a look.

Heres mine when it had just a ss exaust and k+n filter on it: -
Your idle will likely jump about a bit or it wont idle at all, thats the plug for the isv.

And heres a link to some videos shot from the throttle bodied 205mi16: http://www.98ron.com/trackdays/oultonfeb05/oulton.htm Im in the 1st and 3rd vids that mention corrado, redlee is briefly in the 2nd one.

Heres a link to lots of pictures of all cars that were there. http://www.picman.co.uk/cgi-bin/v2.pl?p ... LL_CARS&&1

You could try swapping your tyres front to back to see if the problem changes to bad understeer, at the least it would rule the tyres out.
-
What type of engine mounts did you get? Ive noticed something similar since fitting a vibratech rear.
-
Theres more to it than a transfer protocol, OBD2 cars have a different throttle body and no isv as well as some other changes, its whole new management system. No corrados were fitted with it.
-
Thats just the type of connector, obd2 never came into use until late '96 after the corrado was out of production.
-
Have you got then number for vagparts handy, and how much were they. :D

The scirroco had a 1.8 20vt conversion, not sure on drivetrain. The corner it spun on (druids) caught out a lot of cars on the day, nearly lost it there myself a few times.

Cool, more good vids. Let me know if the guy with the white rallye and anthracite wheels posts any as I was behind him for a while before getting past on the straight heading into island.

Stealth seem the favorite just now at about 100miles from the track, theres also dubsport about 40miles away but I dunno much about them.
-
Sounds like they were too busy or couldnt be bothered stopping you, so gave a flash to slow you down then went on there way.

Strangely I seem to be more annoyed at the moment about the fact my bonnet release decided to play silly beggars and not lock down properly at one side. :?

Best guess just now is the big end bearings have had a bit of oil starvation, basically I noticed it had started to lose a bit of power, looked down at the oil temp and it was at 140 (had 146 on a previous trackday and it was ok), put it into 4th and backed right off. Took it easy round a few corners and the temp kept climbing to 152 so I stopped off the track and me an kebabman had to wait for the recovery truck to tow me back to the pits. I let it cool down a bit then checked the fluids, waters fine, oil was a bit low but still above the minimum. The car starts and runs but theres some nasty knocking noises coming from low down on the left hand side.
