Anyone seen the Latest copy of Lax Muppet??

It was fairly harsh on you but I'm sure that the Police would say that they get loads of excuses like that when they stop people. In terms of the law they're entitled to levy a FPN on you. The only 'opinion' I can offer (which won't help you in this case but may assist others) is that your mistake may have been to move the Polo at the end of the month. I've heard it said a few times that is a harsh time for motorists, as targets have to be met... you may have made a difference to the officer's 2010 bonus chances. Sorry that's not particularly helpful, but you did ask for opinions. :cuckoo: John

Frankly if a company Insignia is the alternative why on earth are you even thinking of anything else? That's a nice car. You need to think about this with your head rather than your (petrol fuelled, funloving) heart.

Thanks for that Henny... just what I wanted to hear on a Friday! So how long do I have to wait for one of these twincharger Polos to go scooting past my VR6 and there I'll be - probably unable to keep up with it, and also in the knowledge that he's getting probably double the mpg that I am. Great... just bloody great... :(

Can you get a BMW 330D or 335D for that money? Wickedly fast, and RWD.

Looks like what started out as a case of epic fail has degenerated into something darker and nastier. But the first few pages are epic - funniest couple of pages I've read since the "pikeygate" thread on Scoobynet back in 2001-2

How good a guide is the Bentley Manual?
corozin replied to TheWizardofOdds's topic in General Car Chat
It's great, but ignore the torque settings it recommends for the outer nut on the rear wheel bearing assembly. If you tighten that to 85Nm your wheels will seize in a week. (the proper amount is more like finger tight and then a small nip with a spanner) Aside from that I think it's pretty good. And at this point in time it's about as good as you'll get for a Corrado :D John -
Like the crappy front wheel bearings I sourced from GSF just 18 months ago and which have just had to be replaced after only 14,000 miles for example. Bearings made from butter are pretty dangerous on a 150mph car... it may get driven that fast occasionally...

Cut the legs off thier zimmer frames. That's what I say :D

Forgot about this thread. Got the gun waved at me again this morning, but I was in a good mood so I smiled at them and waved :D John's point above is exactly what went through my mind the first time I saw these cronies standing their by the side of the road in their flourescent tank tops, clipboards and pens in hand. One thing people with an ounce of common sense and wisdom realise, is British drivers hate being told how to drive. And with petrol and insurance prices currently taking the p1ss, many many drivers drive around in bad moods these days. So all it's going to take is to point that gun at some overly aggressive and angry bloke and it'll all kick off. The Press will do their usual skipping of the details and report it as "Innocent pensioner attacked by boy racer" and motorists will be further tarnished and victimised. I can see it happen though. They stand their, completely humourless and steely faced antagonising people. I love Yan's idea of 30mph in 1st, PMSL  Mind you, they're pensioners, they do that themselves anyway so won't see the funny side! What we should really do is get together a massive convoy of bikers (including the loud harleys) to drive through at 15mph and ruin their Sunday lunch :D It occurs to me that what might be fun would be to pull up alongside them and take a photograph of them in thier hi-vis & holding the speed gun. Pensioner : "Why did you take our photograph" Driver : "So you know what it feels like... and so I'll recognise you both in the supermarket... have a nice day..." :D

I've used Castrol Magnatec 15W40 synthetic for years and I've never had a problem with it. I wouldn't get too hung up on brands frankly. As long as it looks like decent stuff. It's all oil...

VW Events Calendar (check for updates!)
corozin replied to corozin's topic in Event Announcements & Discussion
No problem. Your wish (as they say) is my command - fresh update above -
I agree with kevhaywire on this. This 'system' is just open to abuse by the kinds of curtain twitching pensioners who have nothing better to do with themselves. There is no evidence other than thier reporting you, and who is to say what criteria they apply? Owners of sports cars are (in my view) particularly likely to be picked upon simply because we choose to drive something more interesting than a Kia Pride. I've seen similar complaints to Jim's on Pistonheads over the past 18 months. If I ever get a letter from something like this then I will just bin it. And if any copper thinks he is going to come around and intimidate me with a 'kindly word' based on the say-so of some old f&%ker and with no evidence they can sing for it as far as I'm concerned. But my final observation is this. I honestly think that one of these days one of these interfering fuddy-duddies is going to point thier little speed gun at the wrong sort of person... the sort of person who won't think twice aout stopping and beating the crap out of them for doing it. That is how this is going to end.

No. To my shame I swapped over to T1Rs late last summer, mostly due to the cost and the seemingly endless visits to the tyrefitters to get replacements. I added it all up and (including trackdays) I went through 23 tyres in a little over 31,000 miles at a cost of over £2,700 in just three years of running. The R888 is a phenomenal tyre but I just couldn't continue to justify the cost of replacing them. Not only that but I found out (the hard way) that all the extra performance from them also translates through to the running gear. During those 3 years I had both front bearings replaced (twice), both CVs, the ARB links and not to mention an unexpected gearbox rebuild (unexpected because it was freshly rebuilt when I bought the car). Of course you might argue that these things could well have failed anyway (and they do) but how many people have suffered a layshaft bearing failure on thier boxes! But I will hopefully be at Combe in July (car reliability allowing!) and happy to offer the passenger seat to anyone who wasn't terrified by CrazyDave's article on in the Sprinter last year :help:

I've already done an event at Keevil in February which was decent enough and open pitlane for £109 but I'm now prepping up for Castle Combe in July. This might sound a bit sniffy but frankly airfield days and 'proper' circuit days are miles apart in terms of what I get out of them. The Combe days are in my opinion vastly superior and worth the extra money. Combe is also very cheap for a full circuit, and you pay about the same for one of thier open pitlane days as Autometrix charge for thier 6-session event. For interest Motorsports Events do lots of reasonably priced airfield days in Wilts/Oxfordshire/Somerset for under £120 but the airfield surface is much more abrasive on tyres than Combe is. I won't be doing any trackdays until after the Scotland Trip in June, so the Autometrix day is my next target.

Pure marketing Jim. The last version of the RS was snapped up when they brought it out in August. My guess is that Ford reckon there are more fish in the sea to be had. But frankly £35k for a Focus is getting a bit silly, if that's the proposed price. For that money the car should come with 4WD. I suspect that an Evo FQ340 would still be a fair bit quicker except on dry & smooth surfaces. But Ford are selling to Ford enthusiasts... I remember years ago Subaru managed to sell the 22B edition for over £50k, and VW sold the Beetle RSi at £54k... you only need enough people with the right money...

Just read the news. That's really sad to hear. But as many have already said the most important thing is that you managed to pull it over and get out in one piece.

Anybody know of a courier that will take a gearbox 44kg.....

Try talking to a pallet delivery service like Palletline (but there are loads of others if you Google). They specialise in heavier packages. -
Wasn't the Shell just outside Colchester was it? That's my regular haunt and it was indeed 123.9 the other day when I filled up. I just don't look at the pump any more and block my ears when I go in to pay :? Close but no cigar. It was the Texaco about 6 miles south of Ipswich. The bloody Shell garage on the outskirts of Ipswich didn't even have a Optimax pump that I could find. Shurely shome mishtake? Surely that should be "rip off northern ireland" ? LOL Buy a Mondeo Diesel. My mate bought one on a 53 plate for £1500 two years ago and he gets 59mpg out of that easily. As Volkswagen enthusiasts we attach ourselves to the romantic notion of a cheap VW but frankly the economics of an oil burning Ford kick equivalent VWs into the woods I'm sad to say. I bet you'd never find a 53 plate VW TDi of anything even now for £1500, let alone two years ago. An here's the painful bit. The Mondeo is a great car. John

Well as I will be driving almost 600 miles to get to Muirkirk it will be great if we could meet some locals! Can you have a think about any good pubs or curry houses locally that we can use on the overnight stop (and possibly use to meet you at?) John -
They are very nice but not worth the £54k they listed for new. The car was a halo edition released around the same time as the VW Racing Beetles that you still see in common use today but it wasn't a homologation car. The road going Beetle RSi had what was effectively the first version of the 3.2 V6 (but with only around 220bhp) engine and Haldex 4WD whereas the Beetle RSi race cars have the 2.8 24v and only 2WD. It seems as though they don't appear very often these days, even on the VW show circuit. I suspect this is because many of them were purchased by more general car collectors as opposed to VW enthusiasts. The interiors were really quite special, but still not enough to justify the asking price either then or now.

Personally we should gather the lot of them, put them in a field, and shoot the lot of them. The entire mainstream political class is a disgrace to our nation. [/rant over already] p.s. the Topic headline is out of date already. I had to pay 123.9 on the A12 on Sunday.

There is of course, no truth in the allegation that faced with the imminent introduction of yet another 3p/litre in tax on April 1st, the petrol companies have hoisted the price up to create a public outcry, get the papers bleating about the already high prices, and bring massive pressure to bear on the Government to postpone the planned tax increase. Of course if the Government capitulates, the fuel companies can reduce the price back down again, pocket a few quid for thier trouble, job done. Last Saturday I stuffed £74 of super u/l into my car, and of that something like £55 of it was tax. It's outrageous that the petrol companies are (once again) hoiking prices just before the Easter holidays (and they do it most years) but your anger should be directed at the amount of tax that Labour still thinks is acceptable. Fuel duty is levied at an effective rate of well over 300% on the cost of the levied item. Think about that when you vote this summer. John
