Corrados in Bournemouth area.... WHO ARE YOU?!
corozin replied to frandaman's topic in General Car Chat
Is there any chance of you joining us on the 8th November? It would be nice to know who my Corrado chums in Bournemouth are these days! I think you must be one of the longest G60 owners I've met. That really is a long term ownership. -
I'll get my copy later today. You guys are all so lucky that I'm such a skinflint and won't pay for xBox live otherwise I'd be kicking yer arses tonight, LOL

Corrados in Bournemouth area.... WHO ARE YOU?!
corozin replied to frandaman's topic in General Car Chat
I have to admit I've given the Tidy VAG meets a wide berth for about 18 months. Sounded a bit too much like a trip to a gynacologists to me. I went to a lot of the early meets but then stopped going because most of the people in the centre of it all spawned kids and for a while they were all bloody baby-talk rather than car talk. In other words it was as boring as hell... ZzzZzzZzz... But given the comments on here I might be persuaded to give it a go as maybe things are better there now. If nothing else the coffee in McDonalds is cheap, LOL. -
Corrados in Bournemouth area.... WHO ARE YOU?!

You're in luck. You not only have an aged hardcore Corrado owner in the town (12 years, 3rd Corrado) but also (according to who you talk to) a celebrity owner as well! How lucky are you eh? (again depends on who you talk to!). There are a few Corrados in Bournemouth these days but a lot fewer than there were about 5 years ago when there were over 20 that I knew personally, but I think that's the case most places these days. My car has been off the road for the past 4 months following a blown/seized engine and I've been living with the frustration of being unable to collect it today due to work commitments. But my car with it's er... unusual... livery should be back on the roads tomorrow night. If you're interested in meeting up then drop me a PM and I'm sure we can work something out. I'm also sure there will be a South Coast meet somewhere near Southampton this side of Christmas. Cheers John -
I understand what you're saying but in my view you just can't compare the markets for 'standard' vs modified cars at all as they sell to very different markets. Originality and lack of modifications are far more important to a much larger number of punters than significant modifications. There will always be buyers for cars with wacky 4x4 conversions, turbos and TT dashboards (and possibly even battleships!) but most punters see that stuff and think (a) insurance nightmare (b) cost/complexity of maintenance. A very VERY good original Storm can still make the kind of money being asked here IMHO, but the car has to be an excellent example. That said a top quality Corrado is never going to be the same as (for example) a historic Jaguar or even Type 2 Camper. It will be interesting to see if the price drops on the car linked in the OP through lack of interest... I have to admit that the RS Focus for £8k on his stocklist makes a lot more sense to me than a £6k Corrado

I agree. For that kind of money I'd want a perfect & verified service history, and fistful of MOT certs to verify the mileages and an engineers inspection. The bodywork should also be faultless at that money.

Hazarding a guess here.... but the next kitty that runs out in front of your car won't be so fortunate?
-
Yeah they don't even give you a bit of old rope for the money you hand over to them either. That's a nice little earner for the DVLA. When you consider that the admin needed basically involves paying some underpaid sod in Swansea to type your new reg into the computer and press "OK" (from which a computer produced V5 is posted to you) it's a pretty outrageous fee really.

You ain't kidding! My new engine is going in this week, and no, I'm not changing the one in FM2! DOH! :help:
-
And there was me thinking you lavished all your money on your car Yan, LOL

You have to hand it to the bloke it takes a lot of work and skill to make paper-maché look even that good. What an utter sheetbox. I thought it was a Nova derivative until a number of posts pointed out it was a Golf...

But original Corrado wipers are just rubbish! He could be trying to sell scraps of newspaper and they'd be better than original Corrado wipers! I think you'll have to try harder to catch him breaking the trades descriptions act. On a related note, has anyone successfully managed to fit one of those single wipers that Mercedes started fitting to thier 190 models during the 1990s? They had a neat little mechanism in them which dipped the wiper briefly at the top of the cycle, creating a "'w" type wipe but it also increased the swept area massively.

That advert has got "do not touch" written all over it. For example, if the car is worth £2,500 then why is he trying to sell it for so much less? I can't believe the seller even wrote that rubbish.
-
Yeah but you could have still let it pass. I think that was a vindictive thing to do quite frankly.

I had my busted car towed to the garage today so it can have it's engine replaced. With a bit of luck the big valve head & cams of the expired 3.0 engine won't have been damaged and will make it across to the replacement, along with the fidenza flywheel, the VSR and the relatively recent chains/tensioners to give it extra long life. Not long to wait now.

I don't want to put you off unnecessarily but considering how tight your budget sounds you need to think vary carefully about committing to one of these cars. You can buy a Corrado for £1,400 but at the same time it's very easy to incur a garage bill bigger than that if the wrong thing goes wrong with it. I myself have had a number of bills well over £1,000 and others posters on here will confirm they have too. That's not to say that the car is not essentially reliable, and that you won't find a good one at the price you're looking at paying, but if we're talking VR6 there will be a lot of dogs out there at that price and you'll need to inspect quite a few to find out what you can expect for the money. In some ways considering a 160,000 miler could have it's advantages. For example most cars at that mileage will have had the chains/headwork done (look for a receipt in the £1300-£1800 range depending on the work done) which should put the engine in decent stead for perhaps another 100,000 miles. The downside may be that the suspension, dampers & bushes may well not have been replaced. Good luck with the search, but be careful - John

It's an under-researched and poor article which bears no relation to what the actual rules say. There's a thread on Pistonheads which has already thoroughly debunked it. Nothing to see... move along everyone :)

I think the Corrado is a car that needs to be driven lots and driven hard. Restore the car to 'original' if you like but it won't do much for the residual value if that's what you're thinking. I personally like cars that keep things simple. Either have performance mods you can't see, or follow the "less is more" philosophy, and debadge it, remove the side strips etc. Swap the mirrors for some Mazda MX5 jobbies - do subtle things that aren't immediate. There are a lot of people who really appreciate those kinds of touches as opposed to the 'explosion in Halfords' approach :)

Little bump for September

It was actually nearer £30k. That's still a lot more money than most people will spend on a trackday weapon, but isn't uncommon for a competitive car in club level motorsport. He was racing it in pre-93 touring cars last year but at Brands 2 weeks ago he was peddling a black Vento VR6 in the same series. I don't think you can infer that the Corrado has been sold on - more likely the Vento VR6 meets the spirit of the rules better than a 1996 Corrado Storm which was squeezed through on the argument that VR6s were sold in 1992!
-
Whoever told you those wheels looked "a bit 90s" was being very kind to you. Back in the 1980s you used to find companies like Turbo Technics fitting those lovely 3 spokers turbo'd Ford Orions and the like. I'm not saying this to deliberately wind you up or upset you (and apologies if I have) but really if you have any option at all to get shot of those things you should do it the first opportunity you get. Shame really as I just let a set of audi-styled 16" Wolfraces go on ebay for just £92 including the tyres. You could have had those...

I completely agree. That 6.3 engine should go down in history as one of the great, great engines in my view. I've driven an E63 and am currently only separated from owning one by the small matter of the £70k odd that Mercedes unreasonably demand for one :) But the SLS? What were they thinking? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? It really is a proper minger in my view. In fact it makes the SLR look decidedly smart in comparison. I think a genuine 300SLR would be a much better investment... as would an E63 which at least doesn't look like something my 9yr old nephew made out of lego, will be at least as quick, accepts 4 adults + luggage in complete comfort, and you won't have everyone pointing at you mouthing 'look at that cu47' when you drive it in the town centre. Not for me. Even with that wonderful engine. Yuk.

I wouldn't fret about that. Absolutely nobody except VW/Porsche geeks gives a damn whether you have real or replica. Indeed I'd hazard a guess that 95% of drivers don't even spot a car on the road and think : "those are nice wheels.."

Thats a good video, I enjoyed watching that. Brno is a great circuit. Question - what is that screen in the centre console all about? Is that actually connected? John

Ok since we need pictures here's a MkIV on BBS CH. You can also get them in black (which anyone who knows me will tell you that's the colour I'd choose). I have to say I like the RS6 replicas too though.
