I think that these days you just have to expect that wherever there is a big motoring / enthusiasts event that there will be a corresponding police presence. GTi International is probably one of the largest "events" now held in Suffolk each year, and there are so many cars with modifications that contravene the law (no offence intended to anyone here, but 60% tints and German number plates are illegal) that common sense that they will target the event for enforcement. If your car won't get through an MOT inspection there's no point in bitching about it because the Police decide to check you at the roadside - they can (and do) do that anyway. You just have to get into the routine of fitting / removing things like German show plates at the event rather than driving on the road with them... life's a lot quieter like that in my experience  I'm not saying I agree with the stict enforcement that was apparently being deployed, but you have to see thier side of it - vehicle regulations for the public highway don't get suspended simply because it's Inters weekend... I wish we'd spoken before the meet mate, as I also wanted to finally meet you. Oh well, there's Stoner Park & GTi Festival to come :)
-
I have some pictures. I'll post them up when I get home (if I remember!) John
-
Paul, Did you manage to speak to Ben ? I know he & Paul (who's also doing a 4WD project) were interested in meeting with you John
-
Have you got the 4WD in the car yet Paul? Remember the Corrado shell is gonna weigh a bit more than your Golf did and that will affect the mpg quite a bit. I get about 28mpg on the motorway, but only about 23mpg around town with a fairly stock engine & no 4WD John

Possibly... as long as I can passenger in your shiny ride mate )

Hi Spencer, It was great to finally meet up with you & talk about your car. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me when I looked at the car but rest assured we'll get lots of photos (including ones of you in action) at GTi Festival if we can it all sorted out properly. The car is a work of art - really high quality work and a credit to you, your engineers and your bodyshop man. As for going up the strip at Inters, we'd have died to have seen that... I think Keith Murray's title as undisputed king of the ¼mile strip could slip soon, lol. [For the record, Spencer & I even shared a joke yesterday about letting Keith have a head start!] John

There have been rumours of a coupe based on the new Golf V platform going around for a couple of years now. Bernd Pitchetschreider (VW chief) has mentioned his commitment to building one on a number of occasions. I have to say though that I think the chances that VW will build a rear wheel drive 370bhp TT-slayer a bit hard to believe, because : a) The Golf platform is for a FWD car b) VW's has been "market positioned" at the luxury/comfort end of the VAG range. In short, I'll believe this car when I see it, but it's nice to know they're at least testing the ground John

The main thing to be careful with when having Brembo's fitted is to make sure your wheels will clear the calipers once they're on. With a 305mm 4 pot kit conversion you will probably need at least 7½" wide wheels to clear the calipers - the standard 6½" wide wheels haven't got a chance basically. Make sure you dry fit everything up before fitting the brakes to make sure you can drive afterwards, as the amount of clearance depends on the wheel design as much as the width. With the 328mm conversion (which I have) you are looking at getting at least 8" wide as the pots are even bigger. Anyone who's seen my car since last summer will testify to the 2mm clearance between the Brembo calipers and my 8" wide Mim alloys (impressively close fit, but scary!) HTH, John

See if I still don't make you my bitch on track... I have cunning, good track knowledge, and complete stupidity on my side

I believe the "not signing" loophole was closed in the high court about 4-6 weeks ago. No point even trying that one any more fella... sorry John

VW Driver Castle Combe Trackday, 24th July. £120 for six 15-minute sessions Learn more about your Corrado's handling and performance in one day than you ever will on the public road. Also an opportunity to see how fast a MkI GTi can be made to go if you do the right mods See you there :D http://www.autometrix.co.uk

Has anyone seen a mid engine mounted VR6 C?
corozin replied to phaserno1's topic in General Car Chat
There have been a couple of mid engined cars in PVW in recent months; an American show car and DSP's new speedster (in the current issue) Both with Turbo'd VR6's in the back. -
There'll be more VW's up there in July for the Autometrix event. I thought the track time was simply too expensive to that's why I didn't go up. Nice to see someone took the Beetle Cup racecar up there too - I bet that was popular with the blokes who were out on track... Serious question.... how was the general area around Chippenham being policed? I heard a rumour that Wiltshire Police were very much out in force yesterday ??
-
Very nice bit of work there Paul. Do you think the car will make it to any of the shows this year? Edition38 perhaps??? John
-
It's not at all uncommon to find "hybrid" cars which mixed & matched old & new bits. Basically Karmann used up the old stocks of parts they had at the factory before going onto the new ones. John
-
I don't suppose anyone has picked up on the fact that the European versions of the Chrysler Crossfire are actually assembled by Karmann at Osnabruck - same as the Corrado. John

The original 2001 VW Cup Corrado was indeed a Storm, which was raced by Ken Lark. In 2002 a new Corrado racecar (not a Storm) was built for Lark and the Storm was raced by Lee Wharton, who managed to "accidentally" write the car off at Thruxon on the last lap of the last race. So... alas the Storm is no more.

First things first... do the things actually fit? I have some Massey Ferguson tractor mounts in the shed but the mods to make them fit my VR6 look a bit tricky...
-
... and there's the Sprinter, the events, the discounts, the technical assistance, the knowledge that all of this costs £10 a year less than a Club GTi membership (The Porsche OC is £49 this year). There's lots of reasons to join... John
-
Shit... I didn't realise how easy it was to start a ruck on here! [grabs coat and runs for door] John

Jim, The "Printed" type mats are the OE ones! Having bought a replacement set last year I don't think the quality is that bad actually, but in saying that I mean that they don't wear out too badly. You might find a fancy stitched mat, but it may wear out in a couple of years - at least the VW ones won't do that. John

Well PVW's out, your thoughts on the SNS feature?
corozin replied to Dubcharged's topic in General Car Chat
Well I'm not going to apologise for pointing out the obvious, if that's what you mean!! LOL -
I have a font called "VAG Round" which is very similar to the "VAG Rundschrift D" font on that website link you posted. It cam with an old copy of Coreldraw. Email me direct if you want a copy (p.s. it's not the Corrado font) John

Well Sukh managed to squeeze 9" on the front with 10" on the back of his Porsche rimmed show car, but he had to flair the arches out fully to avoid rubbing the insides (as well as getting the look he wanted) I run 8's front and back no problem. Going wider at the back is not really an issue, it's avoiding rubbing at the front you gotta watch out for. I've known cars on 7½x17 with worse rubbing than I get with my 8x17. John
