  1. No worries, was interesting anyhow. Hope you got your dash back together OK and Dinkus managed to get his radiator back in!? :) I'm going to take the belt of and run her for a few seconds to see if the noise is still there. I'm hoping it won't be, thus pointing to either the PAS or the water pump if I'm lucky. lol, I kind of get what your saying. I'll try and listen in more detail what kind of r-r-raaar noise it is tomorrow then. Dutch
  2. Edd, no i didn't change the belt. I think it sounds too deep and mechanical to be the belt though, but will bare it in mind thanks. It could be the PAS or water pump I guess. I'm going to get a stethoscope of some sort tomorrow and try to narrow down the area that's making the most noise. What ever it is it sounds like it has abit of weight behind it if you know what I mean hence if it breaks I think it'll do alot of damage!? :( Kev, what exactly are the big end bearings? - are the main bearings the ones on the crank? Dutch PS, was nice to finally meet up over the weekend Kev, likewise Dinkus and Supercharged. Very interesting driving a tdi right-hooker and seeing under Kevs bonnet! :)
  3. I have just changed the serp. belt tensioner as the bearing was on it's last legs. The tensioner is quiet now, but I can now hear more worrying bottom noises. It sounds like a bearing of some sort and it's a very deep nocking/clicking that comes from the block itself. It's more noticable on the side of the airbox, down by the crank wheel. I know the water pump is down in that area, but the way it seems to resonate through the block itself makes me think it's a much bigger problem than the water pump bearings. I hope I'm wrong! :( Any thoughts anyone? I'm too scared to drive her now as I've had a piston blow a 2 inch hole in a VR block before!! If it is the crank bearing? - how big a job is that to sort? Well, replaced the motor at the weekend and all was well, untill today, when the fuse decided to blow again. :( Am now thinking of replacing the thermo pack too but sounds to much like a coincidence that the thermo pack packs up 2 day's after sticking a new motor in?? Any thoughts anyone before I throw some more money down the bottomless pitt? (my old motor was binned too so can't get it back and hence a refund!) Dutch

  10. Found this after searching: "VR belts shouldn't screech at all, not even when drenched going through a puddle. Sounds like the tensioner springs have gone weak, which is quite common. Replacing the pulley bearing is all well and good but eventually you will have to replace the complete tensioner aswell. (from Mr. HayWire himself)" Think I'll just replace the whole thing to be sure. Cheers anyhow... Dutch

  12. Trev, I have also developed crickets in my engine bay over the weekend. Can't believe just how like crickets this sound is, but anyhow have located the source to be the serp. belt tensioner. New one on order and hopefully the crickets move out. I'm hoping it doesn't seise on my 130 km trip to work today and tomrrow though - what are the chances of this and much damage if it does? Dutch

  14. ...just spoken to VW and I can get a new motor from them for 104 euros' inc vat, but this DOES NOT include the thermo plate bit. If I want that it'll cost another 55 euro's inc. Question, as my fuse keeps blowing instantly, what are the chances it's the thermoplate? Will I be OK just ordering the motor or should I get both to be on the safe side?? Dutch
  15. Yep, I REALLY didn't want to do the job :x lol, blo&dy dynamat!! Yeah I missed the heat last winter, which is why it was done before this winter set in. Last year I would regularly arrive at work with a thermo. showing MINUS 7 INSIDE the car, and I'd have ice on the inside of the windscreen! ...plus I don't fancy driving wrapped like an eskimo again either!   17. Ahh, ok, cheers CorradoWales. Kev, I actually bypassed my matrix 1.5 years ago but only got around to fixing it properly 2 weeks ago. Sods law that as soon as I fix it and get nice warm air the feck*ng motor goes and dies on me!! Cheers for the info. on the GSF part - looks like I'm gonna be calling them soon then... Dutch
  18. OK, how sure a *think* is that though? :? Anyone got one or know how much they cost from VW? Do GSF sell them and if so would it be the saem part as VW sell, or a cheap copy? Dutch
  19. After recently fixing my heater matrix the motor has decided to give up the ghost now. Well, the fuse blows immediately so I presume the motor is sh&gged? I cleaned out the scuttle area (which was full of sh*te) and sprayed the motor with wd-40 2 weeks ago when replacing the matrix. Is it just coincidental that the motor happens to blow after this, or did I do something wrong? Anyhow, question is what other VW's can I source the motor from (I have a '94 VR), or is it a Corrado only bit ?? Dutch
  20. VR's did come with a dizzy - pre '93 cars I think. You should be using the OEM NKG plugs only and I'd check these first, especially 1 & 6 for fouling. If the plugs look ok, spray a fine mist of water around the engine bay and see if you get some sparks (especially around the coil pack area) The coil pack has 3 coils and one coil fires 2 cylinders. If your only missing on one cylinder only I doubt it's the coil pack, if on 2 this is more than likely the culprit. If it's missing it won't be the MAF btw, but, depending on your ECU code it's unlikely a MAF from a Sharan will work anyhow. Dutch
