Nice so just a straight forward head swap then? Any ideas how I tell a "staged" head/ Fast road cams from a stock ones? Also Can I re-use the 9a inlet/exhaust manifolds or do I need the KR ones??? Apparently an ABF Head Gasket is the best to use?

:pukeright: NSFW! More to the point Rob where the hell did you get that picture from? Raiding Dinkus' drives again? :camp:

Blow nose, Bleed Brakes, Blow nose, hawk up a greeny, Camo bonnet job done.... Youth of today! Did 1/2 respray prep with Tonsilitus in March! That was cold! Lemsip and Caffine FTW!

Is it possile to sling a KR head on a 9a bottom end? If so will I have to go K-jet rather than the current K-E-Jet (9a)? Wondering, as I'm after a stage 2 KR head/cams for cheap and wondering if I can use it? If so what difference will it make?

Hate you and your grey Leather recaros not really, nice car... -
Kev, you're wrong about the Mk1 GTi.. In LHD anyway... (no infamous cross-brace brake bar) Was put together after work by a bunch of White coated technicians... Just because you've had two (with probably 100+k on them doesn't mean they're rubbish) Been in a properly restored Stock Mk1 (New Old Stock used as much as possible) some years ago and was seriously impressed by all aspects.. You have to remember the Mk1 was concieved before most people on this forum and was never supposed to have a "Hot-hatch" version... but it spawned the modern Hot Hatch, wasn't until the MK1Gti that the Big manufactures saw the new trend... Also look back at what eklse was achieving sub-9-sec 0-60 in 77, Porsche/Ferrari... not much else.. Alfa and Triumph were always considered Sporty BTW... and the Dolly was the first mainstream 16v engine. Lotus Sunbeam was a rally homologation jobbie (like the Cossy RS500)

Any reply from your letter to the TT shop yet dude? -
Bally, is Bill still alive?? Not posted since April!

Or talk nicely to some of the companies that regularly ship Classic cars over in containers and see if you can "hoike" some space for a reasonable fee. As Haywayne said takes a good month but cheap! Mate shipped two cars from Cali in a container for just over £800

Plus a good few coatings of Rim wax before use will help as well. Looks good though! Did you end up painting the whole wheel front and back?
-
Strange how it does work... almost looks like brakes are glowing red-hot! Sure as the title includes pink that a mod will be along soon too!

Dave on the original pic in your linky, the little horeshoe pipes are the oil cooler ones yes? And sorry for being thick but the only "missing" hoses will be to-from matrix, the expansion feed and overflow (small bore one runs top of rad to top of bottle)?? Remembering this is a 9a engine NOT a KR...
-
Yes you are... in Gti terms Nowt will beat a mk1 out the box... So any-one care to bet on the "performance" figures for a 1.0/ 75hp MK6 goof which will undoubtedly be heavier than a MKV? I'll start with 0-60... Unable to calculate due to the car's top speed being 52mph!
-
Sweet! mmm choices...
-
5-door "IROC" ... I KNEW IT! Lazy design.... But on the positive is a big direction change at the front from the MK3/4/5 evolution... Oh and Jon... MK1 Greatest Mk2 Fat Mk1 Mk3 Ugly Fat Mk2 with specs Mk4 Bland (To quote that Full-English sketch from Goodness Gracious Me "Give me the blandest thing on the menu!") Mk5 Bit better than Mk4 Now MK6... Still won't make me run out and spend all the pennies I haven't got though!

So can anyone confirm the two (?) hoses that don't get used? Is it the two heater feed hoses (runs to right of block to bulkhead)
-
I'd check it is an "all new" engine, doubt there are any knocking about. About 8 years ago, from memory, a mate (who worked at Murray's Hatfield) went to a special invite parts auction at VAG MK where they were selling "obsolete stock" including MK1GTi blocks/heads. Anything that wasn't sold was scrapped and broken up in a big skip to be melted down. So that would make VAG's shelf life for big parts about 18 years... Last Mk1Gti was 82, auction would have been 99/2000?? If they aren't then they will be a "re-manufactured" engine, basically a "good" Block and Head with re-ground crank and oversized bearings.. This is what they offer for Air-cooled stuff and early Gti's now too...
-
Right, I know that they don't do a 9a specific kit, but the mk2 Goof 16 KR kit fits all but two (heater) hoses... Does the kit also include the twiddly little Oil cooler hoses or will I have to have another fight with my local VAG Parts Primates?

UPDATE... Looks like the Rad has 2 pinholes as there's two white patches on the rear of the rad behind the fan... Bugger... So next Q What's involved in removal & replacement of a rad? -
