Hi Fla, I think it's going to be throwing cash away... It's failed twice for the previous owner, the second time was when he parked it up for 4 year's.. he sourced a spare box which I've had in the garage, but it's not the right one even though it's a VR6 Golf one. I'm thinking it's manual time

Its pretty nasty.... yep it seems to smell very much like burnt oil :(

Hi Dox, I bought it with a busted box.... the previous owner said it had been water damaged by the heat exchanger leaking, but I've just drained it and was expecting to see a 'mayo' type contamination in the oil... but other than it being a bit dirty there doesnt appear to be water in it, when you start the car and put it in gear there is no drive at all, so I'm thinking the valve body is completely shot. Yeah I'm starting to come round to the manual idea again... I hate to destroy another one of the less than 40 autos left, but this thing is going to run a bill way bigger than a manual conversion would ever cost.... could be time to speak to Lilfuzzer again! ;)

Been a bit quiet on the Corrado lately, I'm mid-treehouse build for my sons, so been putting some time in on that, but I've sneaked a few hours here and there and the car now has 99% of it's interior back in and I must say it looks really good, very pleased with it. I thought today I would take a look at the spare gearbox that came with the car, it appears to be an 01M which although from a VR6 type VW car (VR6 Golf/Jetta III, Passat '95 onwards) its a later box than the 096 which will undoutably be in the Corrado, the ratios are the same but is this a no-go situation? Any auto owners out there that have swapped a box out? - I'm cool with manuals but I dont really have a clue on autos... I do have a sneaky feeling that unless the Gearbox ECU sees the correct gearbox it just wont work... I'm kinda worrid as the quote I had to repair the 096 was £1500 :( - is it manual conversion time?

Any signs of leaks? or are they all dry? How much lower are the springs?
-
I'm interested. ;)

Can't you just go for the 1900 overbore pistons? Karl Schmidt type of thing? More torque to boot...

What did you get in the end?
-
Hmmmm - I used silicone grease on the cable and track... seems ok, not breaking any speed records opening and closing but seems smooth....

Thats it! exactly what I did... two strips cut from tie-wraps, a small dab of mitre-fix/superglue and its great. ;) - you dont get the nasty snapping sound as the hammer slides back anymore. If you whip the cover plate off the gearbox you'll see that all the grease put there by VW has moved off the gears and is surrounding them rather than on them, all I did was push the existing grease back over the gears and reassembled it, bit messy and make sure the gears all go back ok, works a treat thou.

LOL! I did EXACTLY the same thing! - the quality of spens part is top notch! likewise I have a spare now ;)
-
Mine turned up today! - its a thing of beauty!! extremely well made and looks fantastic with the factory look plugs! Thank you very much! - looking forward to getting the front in bits and this fitted :D
-
No Worries ;) I currently have an "R6" as someone tried digging it off and snapped it....
-
Bollox.... I need a red rear....
-
I also glued a small slither of plastic under the hole into which the wheel drops - has the same affect of stopping the hammer dropping so low that it wont come out - I thought it might stay in place a bit longer than the rubber band ;) - could be belt'n'braces to do both

Pretty sure the 30% and night-breakers etc are the same wattage to keep them road legal, its usually fancy gas and manufacturing that improves them, they're sold as H4 replacements so I would of thought they are ok? Hope so... I have some fancy Philips ones I want to use....
