Stealth import Shimmel 263's - you can walk in and buy them over the counter, think they were £400 Standard springs are fine.
-
Oooeerrr - not nice, heat, age, oil makes them go brittle - my engine was around 130k and bits had started falling off the tensioners. Have you got the head off yet? - you might of got away with it..
-
Hiya - the head gasket is Victor Reinz and the later MK4 Golf/Sharran item, its MLS (Multi Layer Steel) so really only advisable to use it if you have the head skimmed. Its very good quality and I believe used by VW. Its also considerable thinner and increases the compression ratio - not sure on the actual gains but I measured it with a vernier and its a millimeter thinner than the standard one so will definitely do something. Like you I like to only use the best spares available when building cars. I think my re-bore, deck, pistons, bearings, crank/rod balance came in at £1800 but a big chunk of that was the pistons as the 82.5mm ones I originally wanted the engineering company couldn't source at the time so I went for 83mm forged items giving 2931cc. - I could of got away with a hone and oversize rings but I'm a bit OCD on that front so went the whole hog, I dont intend selling the car so wanted it right.

Thanks Neil, Its really hit a wall at the moment unfortunately due to a change in life... I did strip and clean all the front lights a couple of weeks ago, but its not progressed in a while. The engine is at a mates place in Silverstone along with the gearbox, and the car is at my Mums on axle stands waiting for me to put the suspension and engine back in... hoping to get a bit done on it before the end of the summer, but I wont be running around in it as I expected to be :( I need to update this thread as well - I've been taking pictures but its a bit more tricky to add them now..

Dam - thats a bit of a blow... it would be the clanking noise that would concern me the most, low compression due to wear is fairly straightforward.. strip engine, hone or bore, rings or pistons, clean block, skim head and back together with a steel head-gasket. Like you say could be a number of things... but for 3 pots to fail at the same time I'm also thinking timing, but you wont know till you get going on it. Few bits I bought for mine that might save you some time.. Big end bearings... Glyco as the ones I ordered from the dealer (I like genuine bits) were awful! look liked they had kick around someones tool box for a few years. these were great and the OEM brand https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Big-End-Bearings-GLYCO-V6-VR6-R32-R30-2-8L-2-9-L-3-2L-Turbo-AAA-AES-ABV-axj-/282966674347?hash=item41e220cbab Cam alignment tool https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VR6-Camshaft-Alignment-Engine-Repair-3268-Cam-Tool-VW-Golf-Corrado-AAA-V6-12V-/263555088242?hash=item3d5d1b7f72 Head-gasket I got from Stealth Main gasket set head and bottom end I got from Heritage - again all OEM or nearest to it. Good luck

I'd probably mask the whole area that you need to cut... draw the shape onto the masking tape as it will show better that way as well ;)
-
I'd go high speed and a good lashing of masking tape on the surrounding areas, the body colour paint with a touch-up should be fine as its a dry non rust prone area and will hide it a bit better than Hammerite

Price? Details? Would probably help the sale....
-
Is it possible to get Hella ones? I would say they are or would be close to Original Equipment? I need one too :)
-
Hi Jared I'm also an OEM+ man... I've kept the 12v engine and have added a few nice bits which I'm hoping will just liven it up a little. I've completely rebuilt the engine, re-bored/new pistons, fully balanced, ported cylinder head with matched inlet and exhaust manifold, Shimmel 263 cams and a Schrick manifold. all built with genuine or as close as you can still get parts. Unfortunately the project has stalled due to an unscheduled house move :(

Yeah would be nice, unfortunately I don't have the financial clout to buy a yacht :/

Happy Birthday! ;) well for yesterday! :D Must almost be time for your cars birthday treat of road tax? - what a summer to be driving a nice car around!

I have a pedal box for a VR, but the clutch spring is missing.
-
Ahhh top stuff Hasan! - I was looking everywhere for that thread! thats what you need to do pfnsht.

Its the chrome hammer! dont force it... Its not easy to explain.. but the hammer is dropping into a small cutout in the frame.. the rubber band on the end of the hammer has probably gone flat and is allowing it to drop too low. To stop it completely cut a small slither of plastic about 8 - 10mm long about the width of a tie wrap and super glue it directly under the hole... this stops the wheel on the hammer dropping to low and sticking... and you will never know its there.
-
That'll do it... ;)

To fit it in a non 6 speed MK4 all you need is the Driveshafts, clutch/flywheel and the shifter linkage and you're good to go... a nut and bolt exercise.. Its an O2m box from memory https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Leon-Cupra-R-Gearbox-02M-6-Speed-2004/202355700392?hash=item2f1d56f2a8:g:m0MAAOSw4gxbLjM8

20v Turbo - AUQ 180Bhp engine for example fitted to the Anniversary MK4 GTI
-
Yeah have heard that the 3.68 diff makes cruising pretty uncomfortable... I've kept mine stock for that reason... I'm getting old! I did ask about lightened flywheels at Stealth and Vince said there was a good reason VW stuck that great lump of iron on the end and was best to leave it. Often wondered why no one has stuck a MK4 6 speed box in? - like the 180HP 20v item? - I know it goes in a MK2 G60 as I've seen it in.
-
Hope not as mine is now 2931cc up from the 2861 of the stock motor - when I stripped mine down I found the wear which was very minimal was on pots 2 & 4 :| just a little bit too much for a hone to completely remove so I decided to bore.... 83mm over the standard 82mm
-
I'd definitely get it mapped - if only for the reassurance its running at its full potential... never been a fan of generic mapping as every engine is different. Gesss I cant wait till I'm at this stage... just got a house to renovate prior to getting back on the Corrado :(
-
Gesssss that definitely wasn't worth the hangover :( Would of been better off flipping a coin at half time it was that dull.... was a nice goal from Belgium thou..

Sounds like the alternator is being hit, alternators under load require more HP to run them, I learnt this when I did a small stint at the WRC, they wind the alternator right down when the car is in stage mode so as not to suck HP. I usually buy a diesel cranking power battery and as higher amp alternator as I can, I went for the 120amp alternator, but yet to run it of course on the VR6 but have done this on other builds ;)

It was metaphorically speaking to encompass the tosh that appears on FB - but I have seen that along with other "look at me" type posts, which I grew tired of.
