How much do you want to sell the engine for, and where are you located. Would you do a swap for mine and i give you some cash on top? I'm in Northamptonshire, wouldn't be interested in a swap as the reason I took mine out is I have put an R32 lump in mine so would have no need for another VR lump. I'd be looking for about £500 and it's sitting here ready for someone to come take it away, just needs cleaning up a bit.
-
Why thank you :salute:
-
If you've got a spare $3500 that is.... :D That's not a lot really, but then I doubt it will be able to handle a lot more so as soon as you want more power (which you will) it will start costing a lot more!
-
If you want an engine pre-built ready for turbo then buy mine  Much higher miles but rebuilt with spacer head gasket to lower the compression and used ARP non-stretch head and conrod bolts. Did chains etc as well so it's got plenty of life in it yet, it's just begging for a turbo on it

I'd say it would be bushes and ball joints. Regardless of mileage, rubber still perishes with age so 12 year old rubber is going to be pretty passed it by now. You will notice a BIG difference if you renew all your bushes, ball joints, track rod ends, top mounts etc etc as David mentioned, the car will drive like new again!

Looks like JIMMY's one, shame he's selling.

Yeah I probs am making it sound too easy, it's only easy to me as me and Kev (editted before Kev got the chance to moan that HE has had my engine apart before ) have had my engine apart before so I pretty much know where everything is, so to me the stripping and putting back together was simple enough, but to someone who's only ever looked at the engine I suppose it would be a different matter!! I am happy to help anyone through it though. I got my FPR off ebay for about £80+ I believe, it's not a genuine Aeromotive one but it's a good quality copy unlike the cheap copies on ebay. The FPR is only needed with the Mk5 lump as it has no return line for some reason, don't know how it gets about it in the Golf but to get around it you just put an FPR on. The one I got is overkill really, you only need a small one, but I will want more power in the future no doubt so got a big one  Yeah I will start putting a definitive list and guide together when I can, obviously won't be too in depth as I have done it all now so won't be able to take pics as I go along, but I list all the bits that need disconnecting and all the steps you need to take etc.
-
No idea yet mate, I'll worry about that later  I don't think it will go up by much, they would just want to know the power increase so I'd imagine a few hundred quid maybe?

I only paid £1500 for mine which is a MK5 and it's only done 6k miles 8) No gearbox though but everything else was with it. Think the price is a tad high on that. There are usually a few Mk5 ones kicking about on ebay for around that, some are much higher but they're having a laugh. You can actually buy the blocks pretty cheap new from VW now as they are getting shot because they are discontinued!

Well it's easy if you know the engine a bit and know your way round a spanner  but basically the first weekend I spent on it I disconnected the driveshafts from the gearbox, removed the cat and exhaust downpipes, dropped the water and oil, took all the front end off, took rad off and generally started removing bits like rad pipes, loom, PAS pipes etc that connected the engine to the car and it was pretty much ready to pull out then. Cue the following weekend I dropped the old engine out with the use of a trolley jack and some wood  took gearbox off, dropped the wiring loom off at Stealth (you only really need engine loom but there are parts of internal loom you need so try and get the whole loom from the car if possible), then just spent some time cleaning up engine parts and the bay etc. Then during the week I prepped the R32 lump, being the Mk5 one I needed a VR or 4mo PAS/alternator bracket and tensioner, VR PAS pump with a 4mo/Mk4 pulley, VR (or preferably mocal) oil cooler in place of big R32 one, VR thermostat housing so all rad pipes remain same as in the VR, VR clutch and flywheel ready for gearbox to bolt straight on. I then got an engine crane, lifted the R32 lump up and put the VR gearbox on, then dropped it down on the mounts in the car, job done lol. Then put Dubpower downpipes on and just generally started putting it all back together. And now I'm just waiting on the loom to get sorted by Vince at Stealth. What he's doing is basically taken my massive pile of wiring and will restrict it down to only what is needed, labelling EVERYTHING, flashes the ECU to remove the immobiliser, post cat lambdas, EGR etc and remap it at the same time, then I get it back and plug it all in and THEORETICALLY it should fire straight up no probs  Oh and you also need a DBW (drive-by-wire) throttle pedal from any MK5 golf (got mine off ebay for £25 from a TDI) which you will then need to bolt to the floor of the car at some point, I haven't put mine in yet, I've removed the old pedal though.

You are making it sound too easy, stop it! LOL  sorry! It's not easy you are right, the engine swap part is easy, it's the wiring and setting up that will be hard and take the time, mine's not running yet so can't really comment!
-
Do it mate, it's easy! :D i would love to do it myself, but doesnt matter how easy it is im useless :( i would rent a hoist for the weekend and end up keeping it a month [/quote:2t0ulqag] Nah you wouldn't, you just do everything you need to do before getting the hoist, getting the old engine out and putting the new on in is piss easy! If you do it yourself, i'd happily give you a hand if you get stuck!

Do it mate, it's easy! :D

Now you're talking my language, I love American style pancakes :D And that leads me onto another question.... does anyone have a foolproof recipe that actually produces proper American pancakes?! I've tried everything..... buttermilk, tonnes of Bicarb just before cooking, etc etc but they always end up like stodgy english pancakes. They must have a secret technique or ingredient! Here you go Kev  http://tinyurl.com/ncvdmk

Unlucky mate! I did exact same thing when I first installed my Rotrex, didn't have the oil lines done up tight enough and lost about half the Traction oil :epicfail: I also had an LC-1 fitted to mine, and likewise it was difficult to get a clear reading as my gauge was constantly going up and down. It only settles out when you are on boost at WOT and it settles to the AFR reading. Me and Kev were just driving up and down a stretch of dual carriageway with mine watching it and then tweaking fuelling as necessary.

you still got the rotrex rob? is it still grenaded? was thinking maybe of a change of charger for the better rotrex. Yeah I still got it, need to open it up and swap the bearings though as they are what seized. I need to get my arse in gear really and give it a go! It's only the little 74 version though so I doubt you'd see much more than 300bhp tops with it. I got 270bhp with it running 7psi on lowered compression, no cooling and no proper map so with a slightly smaller pulley, some form of cooling and a proper map it's be closer to 300bhp I'd imagine, and with some Schimmel 263 cams thrown in then maybe over 300.
-
Here are some of mine. First when it was Rotrexed (sadly didn't last long :( ) and now with the new R32 lump 8) and a some point there will be a turbo on it
-
Oh and I will be selling my old engine so spread the word. It's done 160k but I did the head gasket, timing chains etc at 140k and used spacer gasket to lower compression and used ARP non-stretch head and conrod bolts so it's basically ready for a turbo to bolt straight on to it!

Ok completion date is not going to be this weekend now, silly really putting that up as I went and jinxed it!! Had a bit of a scare with the loom/ECU, the donor car had an interior fire which didn't last that long apparently but was enough to write the car off. The engine etc was all fine, some of the loom looked a bit burnt but was only interior loom so didn't worry about it. Well Vince had a look through it all and it turned out the loom was the cause for the fire :pale: whoops! There was no telling if the ECU had shorted and was fooked so I was pretty worried! Well Vince plugged it in to a working Mk2 R32 and turns out the ECU is fine  So he just needs to see if the burnt bits of loom that are needed are salvagable! It's going to be a couple weeks though :( So need to find more jobs to do now in the mean time

Niiiiice! "I can be your daddy, be your rock and roller. You can be my sugar, be my cherry cola!" Great song 8)

The theory of fitting them isn't too bad, drop the front suspension, put the MED's at the top of the strut housing, drill couple of holes in the top and bolt them in. But you have to clean away the area underneath from underseal and as you do so you will slowly reveal a perfect recess for them to sit in, it's this that is the ball ache, takes aaaages to scrape away the underseal enough to get the MED's to sit in. My recess also wasn't perfectly round so they wouldn't go in so we had to faff about grinding the MED's down to slightly oval to get them to fit. Once you get them in though it's just a case of bolting them in (to pre-drilled holes which you'll need to mark up correctly) and then put the suspension back on. Obviously all your tracking will be out, but we marked it all up before we took it apart with the help of a little laser pen and some tipex  we got it almost cock on as drove fine! IMO they make a massive difference to how the car drives, I loved my first drive with them on, the car felt so much more positive to drive. Only problem is you have to be prepared to replace the bearings every few thousand miles!
-
Pahh! Traction is for pussies  Nah I'm just reeeeeaally jealous! Loving every bit of your motor mate :notworthy:
-
I don't recall receiving an application from you to use my patented headlight mod? It does make a big difference to how the car looks, so about time and well done :salute: I bought the patent mate, it's mine now!! Yeah I wanted to see how they looked so put the front end all on loosely, and have to say, they look much moodier! Just needs the engine noise and speed to back up the look (and a nice set of Rota wheels maybe )

Did some minor jobs to the car over the weekend, nothing to the engine as waiting on wiring before I can do anything else on that. Friday night I got home and had nothing to do, so went Halfords, got some Hammerite Smooth Black paint and set about FINALLY detailing my headlights!! Been saying I will do it since I have owned the car. Took them apart, cleaned them up and painted them and they look sh*t hot imo 8) Saturday I pulled the car out the garage, removed the throttle cable and pedal and then set about de-rattling the interior! Basically replaced every bit of old felt with new and put felt in between everything that touches!! As well as making sure EVERY screw was screwed in properly. Now the dash feels much more solid and from just banging it and pushing it about a bit seems a lot quieter, but can't really comment on it until I'm driving the car! Didn't get any pics sadly, didn't think it was worth it. Then I put the front end all on as a mock up (nothings screwed on, just held in place) to see how she's gunna look and I got all giggly like a small child again seeing her nearly complete!!!! I want to drive it!!! Will update when I find out about the wiring :salute:

Cheers mate. Yeah I never seem to remember to take lots of pics, I'm too busy getting stuck in and getting it done! I can provide any pics though, well apart from any of putting the engine in etc but that's all fairly straight forward. Any questions you have though just ask!
