i would remove it from both surfaces before you replace the axle bush and bolt on the stub axle. i was advised to do this (after I had a heap of supension components powdercoated when i was working on my old truimph) before i reassembled it.

Mot is now out. Had a bit of spare time today, so thought i would make a start on the rear end refurb. i had put the rear up on axle stands a few days ago, and been liberally spraying WD40 at all the rusted bolts over this time, after a lot of wire brushing first. Seemed to pay off (or more likely i was just v lucky ) as no major probs getting any off. i was sure the carrier bolts would be a nightmare, but no. pass side rear caliper looks pretty new, driver side was siezed already. collecting what i can for shotblasting and will then repaint. just need to pluck up a bit more courage before i take the axle off. Oh yeah .... if any one wants a tow bar.....
-
Cheers Steve, hows yours coming along, did you get rid of that towbar :nono:  thats it off the road now. tow bar off !! just about to start stripping off the rear suspension/brakes. planning to take of the rear axle to to get it shotblasted and redo axle bushes. got some time to kill until i save up for the bodywork/respray. will post up some pics soon.

Finally got round to putting up some pics of the new project. She has been looked after well, but needs a bit of TLC at this stage but for an 18yrs old she is in pretty good nick. Bonus is the interior, which was retrimmed in leather 3 yrs ago, not sure if i would have used the colour combo. interior just needs a good clean up. going by the thread that was talking about what denotes an early valver, this is. no sunroof, elec mirrors but keep fit windows. no side repeaters either. Ive known this car for about 15 yrs & i cant ever remember it having them ? but it did have a knock so maybe the wings were changed. mechanically seems sound pulls well all through the rev range, with only a slight rattle from the top end at idle. done around 137,000 now. Drives far better than the 2.0 did, but perhaps helped by the standard wheels and having new track rod ends, ball joints, top mounts and front springs not too long ago. its only done about 7K in the last 4 yrs. sorted out uneven idle with £10 ISV off e-bay and put new set HT leads on since i have had it. body needs sorting - little bits in sills and arches so thats the first job. The rear bumper has been butchered for the tow bar which was fitted, but managed to source an early style rear locally. The MOT runs out and of April so will run it till then, put it on for another & see what needs done. then its getting stripped for the boywork to get done. once thats done will started on the rest. given its age, i am tempted to keep it pretty standard with some subtle upgrades yet to be deciced upon.

found where oil leak was originating from (after a while speant cleaning engine with gunk) fitted new HT leads spent a while working out why idle was uneven at tick over & resolved it by fitting spare ISV. took it for a drive.... smiled 8)

nice vid no side repeaters -
going to look at a used rear bumper tonight. Bit unsure of what a reasonable price would be for it. Thoughts appreciated

havin g sold the raddo 1 week ago, i found myself VW less fro the first time in 8 years. I sold the C as i couldnt afford to run 3 cars (after buying the missus a jeep to tow her horse & selling it help pay for a horse trailer) i was wondering what to do with my spare time and spare cash now i had no C to keep on the road :? Got a phane call last week. Family friend who is in his eighties had a raddo since new, 1990 1.8 16V in red (i think its flash red). has been told he can no longer drive (to be fair he hasnt driven it much the last few years, although kept up servicing and maint to keep it on the road. However this car was lavishly cared for up till a few years ago as he was a mechanic to trade & bought it after he retired. anyway the phonecall kind of went would you like the raddo........ well i was never going to say no......was I :D picked it up today. drives fgreat (much better than my last valver), but really needs a little tlc on the runinng gear and bodywork to get it striaght ... but really not too bad for an 18 yr old car. This was the first VW i ever drove 15 years ago, and it gave me my VW bug and is what made me want to get a C when i could afford to run it. when i got in it today i was smiling just like i had been all those years ago.... the project begins...... will get some pics up in members gallery soon

in my experience a lot of these sales exec's have already made their mind up about whether or not your are browsing or buying based on appearance alone, and that influences their reaction / response. I feel generally i have been treated badly before in main dealers especially if your younger and not particulary smartly dressed, they just assume you cant afford anything. :? i have had equally bad service when looking for a car with my wife and daughter present. To be fair they are not all like this, a local Mistubsushi main dealer near us could not have been more helpful when we were looking.

sorry, its going from a 2.0l 16V with a cat to a 1.8 16V with no cat. so not adding a cat. i have the chance of getting a 1.8 and thinking what i can potenially swop between the 2.

feel a bit thick asking but will a magnex cat back exhaust system from a 2.0 16V fit onto a 1.8 16v no cat ?? thanks

hi, keep getting above problem. starts fine on jump leads & runs fine once started. my initial susipcion was battery not holding charge as opposed to alternator prob. howver both have been checked and are apparently normal. i still eckon it may be the battery ?? Any thoughts appreciated
