1. He did indeed. "Oh I didn't notice those" he said. There was a picture of a single wheel on the auction, and he'd stated "the others are in the same condition", so ....
2. I wouldn't recommend this.. I went to see a set of wheels having won an auction.. Found out one wheel was covered in scabs, refused to buy them.. He wasn't a happy bunny... I'm just glad I didn't have to pay postage to find out they were knacked!!
3. Sounds pricey indeed - where did you take it?
4. I remember the banbury road as being the one Vince uses to test drive cars on. Great, but it's so smooth he can never feel any of the problems we've been experiencing!! :(
5. (The nice, smooth, banbury road you mean?)
6. "more than fair share of niggly faults" - no shit Top Gear!! At least they mention the now infamous timing chains that VW has so far failed miserably to address on ANY VR6 engine.
7. The mirror glasses are inevitably heinously expensive from VW - around £40 each, as I recall. I didn't bother, and I now stick my hand out the window and wipe the damn frost off with my hands...

What should i buy ?

Note that I've seen Storms listed as group 19, and I'm surprised that there's no reduction for the 2.0 8v - I was under the impression the top two were the wrong way round!

http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/insur ... 1=&spare2= Hope this link works... If not, set the following to be for me, someone:
Volkswagen Corrado (1989-1996) Derivative Insurance Group 1.8 16V 3d 15 2.0 8V 3d 16 2.0 8V 3d Auto 16 1.8 G60 3d 17 2.0 16V 3d 17 2.9 VR6 3d 18 2.9 VR6 3d Auto 18 2.9 VR6 Storm 3d 18 2.9 VR6 Storm 3d Auto 18
Less to go wrong on a 2.0 8v engine than a VR6, G60 or even a 16V. Plus the engine's torquey delivery means there's simply no need to rev them hard to make progress .. which goes back to the way they're driven I suppose. But yeah, it's a Corrado after all so no doubt it will need replacement door handles and headlight switches before too long, no matter which one you go for. :(

Oh and no-one has so far mentioned the 2.0 8v - the cheapest Corrado to run by a long mile. It's got the looks, the handling plus a good dose of fuel economy and MUCH better reliability than any of the others. Plus it's a few insurance groups down on any of the other cars. It's also less likely to have been thrashed to death!! Ok, at 115bhp it's not going to set your world on fire, but it'll move nicely and if budget dictates it's well worth looking at. (Let's face it, if money were no object we'd all have VR6s with VWM VSRs and super/turbo chargers... :) )

What should i buy ?

Hmm, perhaps i am. I only paid £2000 for mine, and i rekon its worth more than that....... but then im prolly the exception that proves the rule! :D You can always make money by buying low from people who don't know the value of what they're selling - no matter whether it's cars, houses, cabbages or antique urns!! Those who didn't get a bargain won't be in the same position I'll bet... I did say massarket - VW only played off the "exclusivity" of the Corrado when it turned out they weren't going to be able to sell many of them!

I have a VR4!!!

I think the VW price is £198 + VAT. Your discount will have to be pretty fecking good to get anywhere near GSF's price!!! There's an ongoing discussion about BERU vs Temic parts, however. There are people who claim that there's no end of problems with the cheap ones from GSF, and there's people in the US who have pulled both parts to pieces and found them to contain identical sub-assemblies, made by the same suppliers, so YMMV. Given that you can almost buy two from GSF for the same price as one from VW I think the answer is pretty clear, however!!

I have a VR4!!!

Sounds about right. Follow the HT leads back to the coilpack - if 3 and 4 are connected at the same point, vertically, then one of the three coil units has definitely gone. I think they are, but can't recall..

Suspension

The joys of Corrado ownership.. :( You've really not had much luck mate!

What should i buy ?

If 0-60 is your sole aim, you need a VR6... ;)

Consensus is that the 2.0 is a torquey-er engine than the 1.8, so despite the same power output it's a bit more satisfying to drive. The 2.0 also benefits from being the late exterior and interior (though some of the parts are less reliable for that) and also it's younger - you're rather more likely to find a 1995 2.0 16v in good shape than even the last of the 1.8 cars. However, no Corrado is going to be a "good investment" - it's a massmarket car after all. I don't think any of us are under the mistaken impression that one day any of our cars will be worth more than we paid for them. The best we can hope for is that the market stays steady and we don't lose too much. My 2p. :)

Steam Cleaning

Yup, too many hurried steam cleaning jobs result in nightmare electrical problems later down the line. I'd rather have a scruffy engine! :)
19. There's only one model of sensor listed, and it's common across all the range. My guess is all the components are identical phat, except possibly the ABS controller and pump unit. The ABS controller might even be the same though. The EDL is rubbish, you won't miss it. It probably wouldn't have anything to do anyway, given that you have a LSD.
20. But the plug caps are in the right places, rather than the 12v VR6 plug mounting points that are in two very obviously different banks. It looks fairly genuine to me.. :) What they don't show you is how low the sump sits under the front end!!
21. Yeah absolute first thing - wheel balance and wheel bolts. Next, while they're balancing the wheels ask them to just make sure the wheels are running true and there's no dents in the rim or anything. Alloys bend remarkably easily!! After that you want to be thinking about bearings or steering components.
22. Ok, I admit I've taken advantage of ABS too, but assuming you're on the ball enough to not lock the wheels and plough on without thinking (ok, an assumption I know), then it's only going to give you an extra few %, and chances are you'd have missed it anyway... So the thing is, whatever happens, whenever it happens, because you *have* ABS, you'll never know what would have happened if you hadn't got it! :) So if you *haven't* got ABS, I wouldn't bust a gut and spend a fortune fitting it, in other words!! :) * dr_mat's lawyer would like to point out that this is not a contradictory opinion, merely an observation supporting and enhancing the argument further. ;)
23. I thought I said all of that... Clearly I downt speke rite. ;)
