do a search. I cut up a shell a while back, plenty of pictures of the car on it's roof.

Did this guy do it?
-
aww, I thought you'd broken down on the motorway and needed a lift!
-
Not really. They are just different methods by which you change the coding of the ECU. A remap is changing the code on the existing unit and chipping is changing the actual chip itself. The result of both of these actions however is the same and the terms have become essentially interchangable and to mean the same thing. Nick You contradicted yourself a fair bit there Nick! I say they're different methods, so you say "not really. they're just different methods" *gets bored*

you don't have a secondary water pump but that does look like your one and only water pump is leaking from a seal. It's not massively hard to do, but then that's based on how well you know your way around a toolkit. no the VR6 and 16v don't share any common engine parts as far as I know. Get a 16v one. They're £30ish exchange from VW, so absolutely no reason to buy a cheapo one!
-
have you checked the brake servo vacuum line? also when you say there's no fluid leaking anywhere have you checked all the cylinders, reservoir and the caliper pistons? The slightest deviation in system pressure will display as a soft pedal.

Forgot to mention the primer cans that you'll need in the same quantity :salute:
-
you won't do it for less than £60 at all mate. If you think that then you probably shouldn't bother. Paint will cost you £200 by itself even in cans. You'll need 20 cans a coat at a can and at least 2 coats of paint so that 20 x 5 x 2 = £200. Plus all the prep work with white spirit and sandpaper etc etc etc.
-
you can get a good finish from a can but it takes a long time, you need to do a lot of prep. There's plenty of VWs out there which have been canned and a few of them look really good. It just takes time really. I wouldn't try it with metallic or pearlescent paint though. A Mk2 golf would take between 15-20 cans per coat so a C would need a few more than that and you'd want more than one coat too. I wouldn't bother though personally.

chipping is different to remapping. Which one are you talking about?

Is your engine running rough mate? No point rebuilding it if it doesn't need to be. Try doing a compression test and then a leakdown test to see what condition the innards are in. To be perfectly honest, if you are mechanically dumb I wouldn't try an engine rebuild. It'll cost y9ou a lot less in the long run just to buy a rebuilt lump. A refurb'd KR should be £300 ish last time I checked? Parts for a rebuild alone will be way more than that. Jon :salute:

Steve's right, you can't remap those ECUs.

Sandblasting (or what else?) to clean oily bits..?
boost monkey replied to Jim's topic in Suppliers Forum
i'd agree with that. I think you can "mask" off areas you don't want blasted, same way you can mask things you get powdercoated? otherwise, a little elbow grease never hurt anyone :norty: -
Awesome car! Love the colour. Does it have drums on the back or are my eyes playing tricks?

lamba prob dead, causing stalling and rubbish idling...?

That's exactly the point Neil, If you connect it all up, it WON'T dry. They need airflow to dry. Basic Chemistry: solvents evaporate. If they're in a closed system, they will remain in that system. Like your engine. And then go boom boom. -
yeah i'll harass him for sure :D no idea on the wheel size mate, not up on that kind of thing i'm afraid :pale:

Hi guys, So the plum got aligned yesterday, and now my steering wheel points to about 5 o'clock, which means the 4-spoke bit is up at the top and covering the dials in the straight ahead position! Not great :| The guy who aligned it said that I can't just pull the steering wheel off the column and straighten it that way because the weighted auto-centering mechanism in it will be out of whack and won't work anymore. Is that true? Can i just pull the wheel, straighten it on the column and be done, or am I in for a lot more blood sweat and tears with disconnecting the UJ again? :pale: cheers for your help, Jon.

Last few pics: Forgot how hard UJs are to line up! Much thanks to ProdigalSon for helping at the column end. Finally got it on and bolted up both ends. YES! Rad support panel brush hammerited. Not pretty but it'll do. Could do with some waxoyl in the cavity really, i'll have to pick up another can before I put it on. Cross member with bushes pushed in. Garage did this at the same time as my alignment and charged me 1 hours labour for everything. Even did Prod's one too! Wax mechanical. That should last a while hopefully. Someone dropped these off a minute ago  Unfortunately I'm just holding them for a special friend :camp:

Ah yeah chris, good times! Still got that bench, I should put it in sometime. Not sure if i'll make the 26th as car is off the road now until the rear beam is assembled and swapped over. Then I got to do my windows and a couple of other little things for the new MOT :salute: I'll see if Prod wants to come down though, maybe I can get a lift in the G60.

You're in the wrong thread :nono: You want to be here
-
Why yes I am! I will have to send an update when they are delivered to me ;)
-
Hi Ted, yes you can replace it, i have a spare whole assembly from a 1992 K plate 16v. Not too sure what the going rate is though.
-
Just wanted to add how chuffed I was with my new found handling and steering. The replacement rack really is spot on and it's not even powered yet! Well happy with hoe the DIY refurb rack turned out  I had some reserved thoughts about the gas shocks; they seemed a lot softer initially, but the ride quality really is very good as Supercharged says. I notice a tiny bit of body roll but with stock springs and ARB this isn't surprising in the least. Gutted the car's off the road now, I'm hankering for another drive :norty:

 Sometimes I think your 2p is worth about 5p in the real world :salute: I would say 10p but then I'm comparing you to a Fruit Salad mix-up and we all know who will come out on top

It'll be a long time before engineering makes a real impact here Kev! Car's not my cup of tea either, but you do have to appreciate that almost everything on there is functional. Why bother trying to mate up the drivetrain to a Corrado instrument set when you can just use all the Audi stuff.
