  1. Oh right, maybe my cable is ok then. I tried getting in at the dials but I think they are held in place by the tension in the speedo cable (after i removed the screws)
  2. Worked out that my speedo doesn't work as my speedo cable has no drive on the gearbox end  just a bit of cable! Coool.... Also, went and picked up the 32mm spanner so that I could remove the dead track rods from my replacement PAS rack, thanks to Supercharged for the tip.
  3. Cheers mate! Will prob attach the rack back to the subframe briefly so I can get some torque onto the 32mm nuts for the arms. guess i'm off to halford this avo then! Might pick up another 17mm socket to attack spare subframe-wishbone union with....grrr.
  4. sounds awesome! cheers for the help.
  5. Gormless... or ghey! No!! I may be single but i'm not desperate! How is the relationship going with your scorpion backbox? :fondle: Just a standard Corrado one, had a heavy duty/diesel one on my golf and you could feel the idle vibrations in the cabin! It was awesome.
  6. :awesome: cheers bro. p.s. that picture makes me think gormless as opposed to awesome??? either way, it's comedy
  7. Good news! loopy bits on gaskets are probably to go round the coolant lines into the carb 8v manifold, as they were heated to prevent carb icing. Yes, I am a geek.
  8. So, my new parts from VW Spares came today, can't rate them high enough! Decent prices, really good quality and fast delivery. Cheers to Toad for the recommendation :D passat climatronic wiring diags.pdfparts1.JPG[/attachment:3v3971o5] Box of parts to add to the collection... climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdfspectre.JPG[/attachment:3v3971o5] The name of my self-made business (one day!). Stands for: Specialised Precision- Engineered Custom Turbo Racing Engines 8) 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfparts2.JPG[/attachment:3v3971o5] parts4.JPG[/attachment:3v3971o5] Complete tie rod ends with self-locking nuts (and plastic balljoint protectors whilst in transit), Steering rack rubber boots (need to get some jubilees or spring clips) ARB mounts in the bag, Gearbox mount.
  9. btw, the spare subframe we have looks really good...but one of the wishbone bolts is starting to round in it.
  10. yeah my CM was a bay item, will probably need wirebrushing minimum and then coating in something. I was thinking that ET pic worked well due to the long neck, as opposed to the pistons that Jonny 5 employs, but I guess he is made of metal at least!
  11. Soz to resurrect this, but saves me opening a new thread. How do you get the old rods off? I've just been out there with a monkey wrench (max size 30mm) and it's still too small! Anyone know what size hex the tie rod beneath the rubber boot is? Cheers.
  12. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH YESS!! Jonny 5 is a much better advocate!
  13. Paintwork looks next-level good  awesome build thread, keep going!
  14. 2nd hand cross-member came today, some surface rust: climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdfcross1.JPG[/attachment:1inaewsw] 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfcross2.JPG[/attachment:1inaewsw] cost me £20 plus delivery which I didn't think was too bad, especially as it will fit my 16v and bro's G60 should one of us have a really duff one. Also, can anyone see the resemblance in this...? et.JPG[/attachment:1inaewsw] or am I a mental?
  15. Mmm, Vagcat lists inlet manifold gaskets for the G60 as two different parts, seperated by what looks like a before and after of chassis numbers... I can imagine the inlet gasket would be more of a nightmare to align as the studs are removed from the engine, as opposed to the exhaust ones which stay in the head. Perhaps the loops in the gasket are designed to go round the injectors, which would mean removing the fuel rail at least, if not the injectors too. Fair play if you refitted the gaskets just to get the car running and check the new parts work. Not sure what i'm up to tonight, have you read up on the gearbox removal?
  16. A w e s o m e!! You gonna keep this thread going for the build or start an Ultima one?
  17. format probs with the pics matey, loooking forward to seeing them! Glad you haven't given up on this :D
  18. You should deffo do the clutch anyways bro, you must be putting around 200hp and the same in torque through an old clutch rated for 160hp! easy enough to do though :D
  19. Good news bro, but... you really shouldn't have re-used your old inlet gasket. I was under the impression you were going straight back on with the phenolic, and so didn't think anything of it. You might get away with the gasket, you might not. I've always been told that you should replace gaskets on anything that you take off that has had one on....made more sense in my head! Edit: I'm guessing you took the TB off aswell then, and didn't replace the gasket for that too? tbh, you might be fine, I just would expect someone to replace them both. I guess the summer isn't that long to go...
  20. Took delivery of new (and s/h) parts this morning, muaa ha ha ha ha haaaaaa.
  21. PMSL! I have no desire to know what Diesel tastes like, unless someone tells me it tastes like Guiness  Siphoning is a good plan though for sure! Glad we emptied the tank on the deads shell before we took it off, had about 1 gal in! promptly made it's way into Ron 8)
  22. I was talking about the spring baseplate personally. I still have a pair of fronts from Danny's Ex-shell, I could try stripping those and taking them apart tomorrow and see what happens. People sell dampers in pairs / fours as just the shock absorber itself, but VAGCAT shows them as a single unit integrated with the sleeve and lower springplate, so I'm guessing Dinky could be right.
  23. Ok, yes you're right it doesn't really break them but if you brimmed a petrol car with diesel then it would need the tank draining which is costly. tbh, I didn't know this at all, so thanks for pointing it out! Been a long time since I was near/driven a diesel and it deffo wasn't a new generation HDI/ Common rail! I guess it must be down to the fast that the diesel is a more complex form of hydrocarbon than petrol is, and as such it's long(er) chain molecules are more suited to act as a lubricant and a fuel whereas petrol is more just a fuel. Good to know, cheers :D
  24. I can understand the reason to want to buy genuine parts, but there are sooooooooooooooooooooooo many parts that are identical between GSF and VAG, the difference being the mark-up. And people moan about the price of genuine parts....? just do some research! :D It really isn't hard to shop around and find out that (for sake of an example) VW use Febi Bilstein for their mounts, therefore I'll buy from Febi Bilstein direct or a supplier of and save £££. Prodigal and I were talking about this just the other day. If parts are identical, why pay more? Ok, in my case I bought the following for my H-reg 16v. None of the parts are genuine VW (don't have a VW stamp on them): ARB Drop links, ARB inner mounts, Wishbones, Strut Top Mounts, Tie Rod Ends – sell on, bought complete tie rods, Cross-member, Engine Mount Front, Engine Mount Rear, Gearbox Mount, PAS Rebuild Kit (Tie rods w/ ends, tie rod boots). And all in it came to ~£150 plus delivery. (The Crossmember was £20 s/h if you're wondering) If the GSF/Pattern parts literally are crap (i.e. ignition switches, radiators, other parts that elude me) that I have experienced or someone else tells me about, I have no worries about it at all and I'll get VAG parts, but on the whole it's a false economy *IMHO*. I do appreciate that sometimes VAG parts are engineered so much better, like oil filters, which have the special non-return valve in that stops swarf But then again, I wouldn't have been able to buy half of ^^^ that stuff if I got it from the dealers, discount or none :? :( Just my 2p really, if offended please consider it a rant of a student wishing his Burgundy was fixed and move on!
  25. but combustion wise, petrol engines can't burn diesel but diesel engines can burn petrol? so half-right?
