  1. any way to test between stem seals or piston rings as the source before taking engine apart - compression testing? Tim
  2. how much are we talking re re-build, guessing this would be new chains and guides, new gaskets - new seals and piston rings - how much is a ball park figure if i do it all myself?? And how much if i give it to someone else? Tim ---------- Post added at 06:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:37 PM ---------- could this just be a gasket?
  3. funnily enough - they are only around 9 months old! now replaced though! thinking the root cause needs sorting, which might be engine internals?! T
  4. cheers dude - progression though - had issues with the new coil pack as it wouldnt release the leads - they were literally stuck onto it, snapped one trying to get them off, unbolted the pack with leads attached and took the whole lot to GSF, spoke to the manager who amazingly replaced the leads for me for free (and gave me more expensive ones at no extra charge!) and fully refunded the coil pack, no longer out of pocket with broken equipment! Guessing photobucket doesnt work for you FishWick at work, thanks for looking anyway mate. Tim
  5. no blue smoke, will post a picture of the plugs removed the other day t ---------- Post added at 11:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:40 AM ---------- right - heres the pics cylinders numbered 1 2 3 4 5 6 Any suggestions Tim
  6. if there is oil fouling what does that mean? gasket gone?? Tim ---------- Post added at 10:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:03 AM ---------- plugs and leads are all new! Hoping theres no issues there, when i removed the ht's one at a time whilst the engine was running, the only one that didnt cause the engine to stutter more than it was already was lead 2, but the old plug in lead two was the cleanest when removed. It was 5 and 6 that had oil covered plugs. Tim ---------- Post added at 10:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:08 AM ---------- no cracks in the old bosch coil either
  7. VR6 running on 5 cylinders, went and purchased new leads and plugs, not sorted, so new coil pack, worked for around 5 minutes and then killed it! Now back on 5 cylinders and lumpy again, 20 mins later suddenly picked up again and full power for around 20s, then died again and back on 5 cylinders. Got it home. What kills coil packs or could cause it to run on 5 only with new plugs and leads and coil pack? Faulty wiring?? Bad connection?? Tim
  8. Went over to GSF today, picked up a Coilpack and fitted, ran smoothly for a bit, then whilst going uphill back to bath it dropped back to having half power and was crap again, 10minutes later, a further burst of normal power for around 20s followed by rubbishness again. What the hell is going on? Also, got back, went to check which cylinder it was again by removing the leads one at a time from the coil, they wouldnt friggin come out! Gently does it, pulled in a straight line - it snapped at the bend. So, i have half the end of a lead and five other leads stuck in what i think is a new but broken coil and a massively aching fist where i took it out on a beam in the garage! I just want the car sorted so i can sell it and buy a fin estate that can double as a family car, at the moment I am having to spend loads of money and it keeps friggin breaking. Rant over! Tim
  9. Following events of today that are getting me down currently, how much could you hope to recoup from a 93 VR6 on around 100000miles with next to no body damage if you were to break it, anyone who has done so previously how much did you make and how much effort is it? Tim
  10. ANDREW 30, if you would be willing to sell your old coilpack i would be keen to try it on the car and check there are no issues with it, i would pay the postage to here and then if it works fine would buy it from you (with your agreement) for a sum that we agree beforehand. If you are keen to keep it just in case your current one dies then i understand! Give me a call - PM'd you my number. Tim
  11. Andrew 30 - would you be willing to post it to Bath and I will cover costs for P&P and pay you an afore agreed sum should it solve the problem? Hawwy - its the lead that you remove that doesn't unsettle the engine that denotes the gammy cylinder/part of coil pack. The state of my plugs varied massively cylinder to cylinder, one was nearly completely clean, one was blackened, one was charred, two were covered in gritty oily crap (worrying re cause?) the other was pretty standard. I wouldn't worry about the state of the plugs in these old cars unless looking for the cause of loss of oil (someone with more experience correct me if i am wrong). Tim
  12. right - progression, mate of mine suggested to isolate the cylinder causing the problem you remove each HT lead one at a time with the engine running (at the coil pack end) and see whether the engine stutters more. Did so (without getting electrocuted) and the only one not to cause the engine to stutter was cylinder 2. So with new leads and plugs today it is most probably the coil pack - exactly the item i had a spare of on the shelve until last month when i sold it - damn! Could this be anything else further back in the system before the coil pack?? Is there anyone around bath or salisbury/tidworth who would be willing to do a quick diagnostic transplant to see if that is the culprit? Or anyone with a spare on the shelf willing to let it go. Tim
  13. gonna pay for the tyres as it stands, but will be asking for all the fuel costs etc to get me from bath to bristol etc. and all parts required and time used to do the repairs. T
  14. i think it is overfuelling if it pops, so getting small fuel burns in the exhaust?? Not sure - need someone to confirm this. T
  15. could this be anything to do with the three sensors in the coolant system at the end of the crack pipe? And if so would this show up on VAGCOM in a 93 VR6? T
  16. Went to a family run tyre fitting setup in Bristol that shall remain nameless for now, had two new tyres on the front on the BKK 299s that are on the car. All sorted and drove off, going round the roundabout about a mile away and big shake in the handling, hazards on, slowed right done and coasted to a stop bout 100m from the roundabout. Got out - nearside wheel only held on with one nut! Triangle out bout 50m back up the road as was an urban dual carriageway, and as i was walking to do this found the other 4 nuts along the road, with bits of spaced scattered here and there. Oh Bugger! Called the garage who sent out a very helpful senior member of staff with a thread cleaner and jack etc to assess the damage on the roadside, checked out all threads, wheel back on and trundled back to the garage at 20mph. All threads had bits of aluminium from the spacer pushed into them, one had the thread flattened slightly on the bolt. The hub had the first couple of rings of thread stripped out of it in a couple of the bolt holes but is otherwise undamaged (new bolts dont fit that snugly though so I think the thread is not as deep as it was before), brake disk fine. The wheel had knocked the front of the caliper and taken the paint off it. Inner surface of the wheel that abutts the hub was burred where the bolts sit. The garage were pretty good, they had cleared out all the bays and closed so all could focus on getting the car sorted (also so no one was around to hear what had happened!) Cleaned up the wheel and checked balance. Cleaned up the bolts, new spacer fitted and new spigot ring inserted. Wheel refitted. Had to take the car away then as I needed it but... plan is to go back next week, using their facilities with my there they are going to take off the disk on that side and we will inspect the threads, if there is laxity in the threads when compared to another hub they will replace the hub, they are going to fit the new discs and pads that i bought the other day. I think this whole saga was down to a young fitter who didnt check the spacer was centred and that all was flush, so when the spacer slipped back into place as i went round the roundabout all the bolts were slack. This is the garages fault and so they are being really good, and are willing to pay for all replacement parts. I think they were sh**ting themselves that i was gonna blow my top and sue them or something along those lines!! Does this all sound a cosher plan re the hub etc?? Would people be taking it to another garage despite the senior guys being so switched on in this place. New hub? Tim
  17. Please read on if you are experienced in diagnostics - will appreciate the advice... ... For around the last month I have had the following ... Lumpy on start, also at idle and low revs, nearly stalling on pulling away, better at higher revs but reduced power definitely throughout. Almost like its firing on 5 only. Exhaust is not popping but sounds like a steam train. Running at normal temperatures. MPG is down at best from 31 to around 24. VAGCOM = no faults New plugs and good quality leads fitted today (plugs in 4 of the cylinders were really dirty with gritty oil on them) Oil/water+coolant all normal levels. Inspection of coil pack - no cracks etc. All cables inspected leading to coil pack and engine sensors - no cracks/worn parts visible. When the engine is running, there is a visible exaggerated shudder in its movement that is regular. Looking to sell the car shortly so need to get this sorted asap and don't really want to give it to the main stealers as they'll charge me to go looking for hours and hours! Could this be a valve that has broken/stuck, coilpack broken? I seem to remember you can test the coil pack by taking the other ends of the HT leads one at a time and holding them against the block with a pair of insulated pliers?? Anyone done this? Would really appreciate your advice! Thankyou in advance Tim

    ECU reset

Just having issues with a problem that is not showing up on vagcom, lumpy on cold start, reduced power etc, took the car to local chap who ran vagcom and no faults, I have just read the ECU reset proceedure for VR6 and wondering whether this could be the issue?? Have had the battery disconnected for quite a while. Any advice guys and girls?? How crucial is the reset proceedure and would it affect the running that much?? Tim
  19. Thanks for the reply mate. Coil pack looks fine, no cracks etc. Maf connector seems dry. Are VR6s meant to stall when the maf is removed or just to run lumpy??
  20. Car was running fine til about a week ago Previously, car ran lumpy about a year ago, VagCom'd it and it threw up a short to earth, checked all the wiring and found a plug in the back of the fusebox was slightly out, pushed in and problem sorted. This time, suddenly started running lumpy, idles badly, fine when revs are higher, but minimal bph getting through to the wheels. Pup pup puping at the exhaust. checked out the fuse box - fuse 15 had blown. Replaced with 10a fuse and disconnected the battery for 10 minutes. No change. Disconnected the MAF and engine stalled straight away. Oil, coolant etc all fine. HT leads all attached fine. Plugs changed around 8 months again. Gonna vagcom it at the next chance and see whats going on. Any suggestions? Will an ECU reset help at all?
  21. anyone close to either bath or tidworth willing to vagcom my VR6 - has the 2x2 pin connector but i have an adaptor from the multipin. Tim

  23. just wondering if anyone has a single for that side as selling the car soon. T
  24. After one of these as a rather large stone has gone through mine! Willing to remake with a new lens. Tim
