    g60 lagging

Just seen some great tits, give them high energy food on yer birdtable & yer away.....
  2. Thanks for that, I thought you had to take the whole cluster out but now I see from very helpful pictures that isnt necessary. :D
  3. Has the vibration damper ring on the drive shaft come adrift, its a heavy steel ring thats moulded to the drive shaft with rubber which eventually perishes & then the ring moves down the drive shaft behind the wheel & knocks on various parts. Mick
  4. Change the thermostat if you're looking for something else to do...
  5. If I was you I'd try re-attatching that bulkhead to throttlebody earth 1st it is important for the idle switch to see a good earth, might save you a lot of messing about. Mick
  6. Check your earths are good & clean, especially the one from the bulkhead by the coil to the throttle body & the one from the ECU to the coolant flange stud on the R/H side of the head. I dont think the Lambda affects the idle so you can probably rule that out as long as the idle switch on the throttle body is ok. Intermittent problems like these can be a real bstd to find but it sounds electrical to me. The other thing is the throttle cable, is the idle switch operating when the problem occurs, could be a sticky or over tight cable when hot. Mick
  7. 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfIMG_2854.JPG[/attachment:20ftnypk]2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfIMG_2854.JPG[/attachment:20ftnypk] As you can see the pinstripe is getting worn a bit, seems to be some sort of stick on but it follows the contours/line of the body perfectly as if at least made for the rado but I always assumed they were factory fitted because I couldnt imagine anyone putting them on a new car. Regards Mick

  9. Thanks guys, yes I fell for the corrado when I saw a leftie nugget yellow model parked in Bournemouth in 90 or 91 I think, dont even know what model it was as I knew nothing about them but the perfect coupe lines were like nothing I'd seen & it left an image burnt into my memory, at the time I didnt own a car, due to money problems I'd sold my Cavalier CD for peanuts & was struggling to pay debts so I didnt imagine that I would ever own one. Anyway in 93 having cleared the debt I unexpectedly came into some money & by then I had decided that the G60 was the one, a friend at work told me that a local VW dealer had 2 G60s for sale, got him to run me out there & yes there was a pair of beauties, both were immaculate 1 year old examples, one was low mileage pearlescent dark red colour for £13.5k & mine was high mileage 22k for £12.5k. After negotiation I got her for £12,250, the best 12grand I've ever spent by a long way. The car is amazing, in 16yrs I've done 111,000 miles of pure motoring joy, it has been my daily & suffered years of short journeys without any apparent problem apart from batteries only lasting approx 4 years. I replaced the plugs the other day with some new Bosch W6DPOs & while I had the old ones out I couldnt help but peer in with a torch expecting to see a carbon encrusted piston crown in one of them but what I saw was a perfectly clean piston with a clearly visible number engraved in the crown, I have been using Optimax/V power for a few years , certainly seems to keep the motor clean. I 've had the usual door handle/radio aerial/sunroof problems which I've fixed over the years, & the back box replaced once on the exhaust, a couple of wheel bearings, water pump/thermostat replaced, alternator refurbed. I am going to get over to G werks v/soon for a G lader refurb , Oh & I have replaced fuel lines under the bonnet & vacuum lines & the coolant flanges on the head. Its runs just as well now as it did 16yrs ago as I said an amazing car. Regards Mick About the pinstripe I have some pics but dont know how to download them to this forum, if anyone can explain in simple terms how to do it I'll put them on here.
  10. Thats very odd, I have owned the car since June 93 so if these were'nt factory fitted they must have been put on in the 1st year of its life which doesnt seem likely, they are quite subtle & look factory fitted. I'll try to get some pics on here tomorrow..
  11. From what I can makeout my 92 J reg G60 has late exterior with early interior although the steering wheel is the later one I think. Its pearlescent aqua blue & has the red supercharged badge on the back & G60 on the grill. There is a silver deliniating line along the higher crease of the body from front to back both sides that Ive not noticed on other rados. Was this a special model or just one of the many subtle variations that came out over the years does anyone know? Regards Mick
  12. How old is your battery? My G60 had similar problems when the battery was getting tired. If you have a multimeter check your battery voltage, should be around 12.2v after being left overnight with alarm/immobiliser set, then check voltage with engine running, it should rise to 13v -13.5v to prove alternator is ok. Batterys seem to last about 4-5 yrs in my car maybe because I do a lot of short journeys. Last time I had this problem I thought it was the starter or solenoid or electrical connections because I had the same as you, ign/oil lights on & wirring from the pump but no response when key turned to crank engine, when I checked the battery voltage it was approx 11.6v. I didnt have any running problems once it was started but then the G60 is a very different beast to the VR6. A new battery fixed mine, I hope yours can be fixed as easily. Mick
  13. Thanks for that, you've made me feel more confident about attempting this, I was in two minds wether to let my little backstreet VW garage that do my servicing do this but knowing how important it is to get a good earth on the bracket & make sure the wires follow the correct path with ties etc I dont know wether to trust them with my pride & joy although everything they have done in the past has been ok.
  14. Just ordered a Bosch 4w lambda No 0258003165 for my 92 G60 from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bosch-Front-Lambd ... 286.c0.m14 for £53 inc p&p which is an absolute bargain. I have been thinking about changing it as car has 133k on the clock & although runs very well most of the time I do get the occasional flat spot when trying to suddenly accelerate with engine up to temp which makes me think the lambda may be getting tired. Have used some contact cleaner on the plug /socket which seems to help & as the signal from the lambda to the ECU is 0.3 - 0.9v the contacts need to be clean, wires are ok & I note its recommended to be changed at 60k. Anybody done this recently & got any tips, I imagine its gonna be a right bstd to get the original one out after 17yrs. Mick
  15. Had a similar thing on my G60 when the battery was dying, no response when key turned after leaving car for 45mins, I thought at the time that there was a problem with the solenoid or starter moter connections & after poking around for 10mins its coughed into life when I tried again. Drove straight home & had another look, couldnt see anything wrong but remade the connections several times to clean them up. Turned out the battery was 11.2v when I tested it, seems when the voltage drops below a certain level it doesnt even try to start maybe something to do with the immobiliser.Anyway a new battery fixed mine. If there is no click from the solenoid or cranking then it could be immobiliser or battery or earths or ignition switch, these should have all been checked. Mick
  16. Looks like my 92 G60 had a Pilkington "New Zealand" screen as OE, never had a problem with it. I have had the car since 93 so unless the screen was changed in its 1st year which I think is very unlikely it must be original. Mick
  17. Hi Steve, sounds a bit like the clutch thrust bearing may be getting tired. Also be aware that the ABS does a self check at approx 5mph the 1st time you move after starting which produces a strange buzz/quiet rattle for a second or so. This noise worried me when I 1st got my G60 I thought it was a clutch problem but as there wasnt any other problem I learnt to ignore it, 15 years later its running fine then a couple of years ago on this very forum someone explained that this strange noise & slight vibration was the ABS self check. You learn something new on here every day, I hope thats what it is & not something more serious. Mick
  18. Did a journey in my J reg blue G60 yesterday A31 M27 M3 M25 M4 & an hour doing 6 miles on the north circular to Wembley, didnt see another Rado anywhere! Boy are we getting rare these days. Car performed perfectly despite hours in slow moving traffic, passed lots of breakdowns in newer vehicles.
  19. Standard rado arms/wipers work fine when you grind a few mm off the lobes that stop the arms applying pressure to the blades, grind the lobes.....

    running hot!

My G60 runs at those temps when the weather is hot, sounds normal.
  21. Thanks for that, I will have another go soon. You say the bulbs are replaceable without opening the cluster, can they be seen from the back once the cluster is out? Mick
  22. My 92 G60 lost its LCD panels backlights about 5 years ago & I have never had the time or inclination to look into it, but now I am retired & have time on my hands I would like to get it sorted. Are the backlights replacable without too much hassle, I have had the dial cluster lose once before but chickened out when I couldnt get it to come out far enough to see the plug connection & then found the small vacuum pipe which I pulled but didnt want to come off, as I couldnt see behind I gave up at that point & put it back together. Anybody who has had experience of this I would be grateful for any advice. Mick
  23. 92 G60, heater/demister fan growls on the lowest setting when 1st switched on particularly when cold, electric windows rattle when fully open, also the ABS does that strange self-check at approx 5mph after starting (sounds/feels like a dodgy clutch release bearing), didnt realise what that was until reading on here about the ABS. Apart from that its fairly quiet, being standard apart from wiper/headlight/door handle mods. Super car
  24. Although you say the mounts are ok everything you have said suggest there is excessive engine movement, are you 100% sure the mounts & associated struts are ok? All the symptoms, cracked exaust manifold, charger contacting the bonnet, & electrical problem causing the engine to die under hard acceleration suggest otherwise. As you have said the engine dieing sounds like electrical problem, I would check all loom connections to engine, there are a few that would cause this to happen with an intermittent connection. Good luck Mick
