  1. As I said..... Kev will probably reply to your post..... MORE quickly than I did!!! I'll get me coat.
  2. I recently bought a 1995 VR6 with 119,000 on it. The engine is great, very strong, and it goes like a missile. However, my old 16v handled sharper, quicker turn-in etc. and was more 'chuckable'. The VR6 handles great, and grips like a grippy thing, but the 16v was still slightly better, and more 'raw', a bit more 'seat-of-the-pants'. Also, I have just had a huge bill to replace stuff like suspension bushes, axel bushes, top mounts, gearbox mount, disks, pads, and hoses. If yours has been maintained by a mechanic owner, then this sort of stuff may well have been done. If not, then it will all be worn-out by now. Also the timing chain/cam chain, and guides and tensioners, is a source of great debate on this forum. By that mileage they may well need replacing, although VW say that they never need replacing, and that they will "last the lifetime of the engine". I have not had mine done.... yet. That is a big job because the gearbox needs to come out, so people get a new clutch at the same time. If they have been done on the one you are looking at... buy it! The real VR expert on this forum is Kevhaywire, I am only repeating stuff that he replied to me in my posts.... I am sure he will reply to your post anyway. Good luck.
  3. Picked up my 'new' VR this morning after having various things sorted out on it. The garage had had it almost 5 weeks!! The bill was so high, that I part-exed my 16v against the bill!!! I walked away with £125 of the garage owners' money, and left him my 1991 16v.
  4. 'ere.... we drink other stuff as well as zider y'know? Have you tried Cornish Mead? Does yer head in!
  5. it looks OK in the third picture, but it looks pants in the first 2. Maybe it just looks better in red!
  6. Wadebridge, Cornwall. Dark blue C, dunno which model. K reg. Parked at side of road in Whitecross, near Royal Cornwall showground, about 5pm Thursday night. I waved to the driver, they waved back. Are you on here? Not many C's in Cornwall!!
  7. DEL VR6, I have out-dragged a TT whilst accelerating up a steep hill on a short stretch of dual carriageway, overtaking slower cars. By the look on the guys face he wasn't happy about it either. That one had twin pipes out the back as well. I was a bit surprised, I had only had my VR a few days.

    VR not starting

Surely if the immobiliser was the problem, the engine wouldn't even turn over? My Toad immobiliser turns itself back on (immobilises the car) 30 secs after me opening the door, if I haven't started the car up. When this happens, there is 'no nothing'. The engine is completely dead. I have to turn the ignition to on, nothing happens, no lights on the dash etc. Then I press the disarm button on the key fob, and then all the lights come on, and I can then start the car. This isn't a fault, it's supposed to do that... but my point is, that if the car is immobilised, then it won't even try to turn over..... My 2penneth....
  9. Golfg60, Yeah, I know what you mean. I had a Powerflow on my 16v when I bought that, and it was deafening in the car at motorway cruising speeds. It had to go. I bought a full Supersprint system from Stealth, and I sold the Powerflow on. The Supersprint system was much better, and no loss of power either.
  10. 0-100 in less than 6 is storming. That is "bike quick". My ZX9 is about that. My 'old' R1 was maybe a bit faster, but I could never keep the front down....!
  11. Cheers Kev. I will look at the price of the 288 setup off the Highline then, I will talk to the bloke about that next Tuesday. How much can you get for a kidney on the black market.... we only need one don't we?!...
  12. Kev, Cheers for the advice. I have got it booked in for new filters/oil/plugs and a service next Tuesday, even though it isn't due a service for another 5k yet. I will discuss the timing chain/guides/tensioners/clutch job with him then. Also, I am finding the brakes rubbish, so I will see what he can do about that too....
  13. Dr Mat, I filled it to the brim, and drove until it started spluttering out of fuel. I only just made it to the petrol station! - and that was not deliberate... When I re-filled it to the brim again, it took just over 55 litres - so it must have had nothing left in there....!
  14. Cheers David. I won't trust the b*gger any more! It was pretty accurate on my 16v though.
  15. On my 'new' VR6, the MFA fuel consumption figures are around 31-33 mpg most of the time on trips, and on the second setting the 'long term' figure is also over 30 mpg. But, I know that I just about managed 370 miles out of a full tank (15 gallons). So that means 24.6 mpg Is anyone else getting "optomistic" readings from their MFA? Jim
  16. I certainly didn't snub you Kev.... I am now preparing myself for the fact that I will have to get mine done! I am a complete muppet when it comes to mechanics, so I will have to pay the local VW specialist to do it. My "reasonably priced VR" is now looking a lot more expensive.... How much is a new clutch? May as well do that at the same time....
  17. Alex, Excellent! That's the first link/url to CCGB website that has worked in months of me trying. I will now be joining. Cheers, Jim
  18. Thanks for all the advice guys. A new clutch, head rebuild, and new chains/tensioners/guides all in one go... I am starting to feel faint! I will be selling my valver and using the all of the money for maintenance/servicing on my 'new' VR at this rate!!
  19. rayb74, Yeah, it's bad isn't it? My modded 1.8 16v often gets left behind by bog-standard Clios and 306's etc, especially accellerating up steep hills, when I am trying to use the ovetaking lanes. If my revs are below 5,000 I have no pull whatsoever. Once the revs rise I usually start to catch them up again, but they have pulled quite a few yards on me by then. I have sorted the problem now though.... I bought a VR6 this morning!! 8)
  20. Thanks for that Dr_mat. I have bought the car! Just got back from test driving it. It drives great, sounds wicked. It's in great nick, everything works as it should. Done 119K cost me £3850 I am well happy. Should pick it up tomorrow. Anybody want to buy an H reg valver?....
  21. Thanks guys. Thats a bit more expensive than I expected!! I will listen carfully when I view it later. Apparently, a timing chain change is not included in VW's service schedule for the VR?... That sounds a bit dodgy to me.
  22. Greetings all, I am probably going to buy a 119K VR6 this weekend. (Dragon Green - looks lovely). The owner says that the timing chains have not been replaced. The car has full VW history. I am surprised the chains haven't been done by now. Should I get the timing chains/tensioners/guides replaced ASAP if I buy it? How much does that cost? Cheers, Jimbo (finally going to get me a VR!!!! so excited I feel sick....)
  23. bcstudent, A brand new R1?!!! What sort of student are you?! Nice one.... enjoy. 8)
  24. You actually found a garage that had a working airline?!!!..... I ended up buying my own pump and gauge, because all of the local garages have broken airlines, that they don't bother to fix!
  25. Phil, Revo are quoting 207 bhp and 232 lbs/ft for your car after the re-programming..... exactly why I am considering getting a Leon Cupra myself!
