As anyone been mad enough to just chuck in the old "£2.95 from Sainbury garage" 20/50 stuff, I remember my dad using it in every car he ever owned! Although when he bought his beloved Rover Fastback the valves didn't like it and the car ran like a pig with two legs and one lung.

My wife already thinks I put the C before her, seeing me fondle it would send her over the edge methinks! Maybe, just maybe, if I sneak out in the early hours...........
-
Hmm, I must be getting old because most of them just look silly to me, each to their own though so fair enough!
-
Great cheers, yet again I forgot about the SEARCH feature, stupid sod!!

Yep my mate's RX-8 drives like the Civic and many other sporty Japanese cars, unless you are always on the gas at around 6000rpm it isn't that quick. And when you do push it hard at 6 and above it does fly and feels just like turbo lag, which is why I caught a Impreza out some time back, as he was trying to boot it through the lag I was pulling away from him, by the time we were both hitting 120mph it was level pegging!! The only FWD car that has really impressed me for acceleration and handling (apart from mine!!) was a Fiat Coupe, I know they were made in various guises up to a 2L V5 Turbo (220Bhp) and I would imagine this was the daddy as it pulled like a train and seemed to accelerate around a tight left corner scarily quick, obviously the limited slip diff. allows the Fiat to handle great but it was a sight to see.

I do have limited knowledge of alpha-N mode and know how this affects performance but the performance drops were outside of this possible factor. Anyway the problem was the MAF, new one in problem solved Cheers all MB
-
LOLOL very true, anyway the problem was the MAF all along, new one fitted and the car is back to normal!! Cheers peeps

When my VW exhaust finally decides to retire I am thinking of fitting a Milltek system (probably including the sport CAT), so are these the best value for my car and is there any performance boost compared to the factory fit exhaust? From what I can see the Milltek deal is very appealing but having NO knowledge of so-called performance exhaust systems I would appreciate any feedback. Cheers MB

I'm a firm believer in "what goes round comes around", so on that basis the lowlife that did this will be mashed up soon! I assume you haven't got fully comp. insurance as most companies will replace the window(s) for £50 and it won't affect your no claims. **Sorry I've just seen you have had it done** Positive thinking mate, try not to let it get you down. After fitting the new MAF and erasing the previous MAF fault with VAG-COM I went out for a test drive and WOW, it looks as if the MAF needed replacing anyway!! The most noticable improvement was the standing start, I struggled to keep the car in a straight line which I haven't experienced for a long long time, it felt like it did when I first drove the car, and second gear definately picks up a lot quicker. I am surprised how much the MAF actually affects performance even though the idle and MPG were perfectly acceptable. So in my case it looks as if the MAF was the problem all along, I knew I wasn't just imagining things!!

I replaced the MAF and the car is running as it use to END TOPIC PLEASE ADMIN Cheers people MB

AFAIK Bosch are selling mostly refurbished units as a "ECO" thing and to keep Greenpeace happy! The only original part is the case. Yes my car is a '95 and the new unit looks exactly like the old one apart from a slight difference in the "clamp" that holds the probe/sensor. I'm not sure if they will work with earlier VR6's but G&S said that this particular MAF is for the Sharan so should work on most if not all VR6's.

As you may or may not know I buggered my MAF after trying to detect my power loss problem. After phoning different sources I received prices ranging from £189+VAT - £318+VAT !!! Anyway I decided to take a risk and go with one from German & Swedish as the P/N was 021 906 462A, just the end letter differed from mine which had none. Bosch unit and same 4 pin connection and 80mm diameter case. £69+VAT (including exchange) and it works perfectly, and unless I'm mistaken the car feels as perky as it use to!!!! So unless your lucky enough to find one on ebay then G&S is the place to go. Cheers MB

No!! The bolts must be tightened to 20Nm (15 ft lb), anymore and the sump pan can distort and lead to leakage, any less and the same applies!!
-
I'm not sure what the setup looks like on the Golf but if it similar to the C (which surely it is) then the sump comes off easily (after removing 20 odd small bolts!). I changed my sump gasket some time back in no time at all. Check under the car yourself, it will be easy to see if there are any obstructions. If not then do it yourself and save time and money! Corrado help needed for a wannabe corrado owner
StormVR6 replied to Hank_Marvin's topic in General Car Chat
Yep a great car, obviously doesn't have the raw power of the VR but still has the same appeal, great looks and handling. You will not be disappointed, have fun looking -
Yes from 4000rpm onwards does seem to suffer and when coming to a stop the idle will sit at 1100rpm and then slowly make its way down to the usual 680rpm, also it does tend to pull sometimes and hard accelerating gear changes aren't very smooth as if the engine is cutting out for a split second.

Corrado help needed for a wannabe corrado owner
StormVR6 replied to Hank_Marvin's topic in General Car Chat
AFAIK the Ins. group on a 1.8 16v is 15, so depending on your circumstances it might not be too bad. Elephant.co.uk are the best for me but you do need to pay the total in one lump sum! -
Corrado help needed for a wannabe corrado owner
StormVR6 replied to Hank_Marvin's topic in General Car Chat
Yes the AA check is a lot of cash but if you are on the brink of buying a certain C that £300ish might save you a world of pain!! I would expect to pay around £1500-2000 for a 1.8 16v (around 100K) in good cond. and a years MOT & TAX. -
Cheers Kev, so am I right in thinking that as long as the multiplug is the same then the sensor will work? Thanks mate MB P.S. I have just checked my plug and it is a 4 pin connection

Corrado help needed for a wannabe corrado owner
StormVR6 replied to Hank_Marvin's topic in General Car Chat
Alright mate, the Corrado can be a great car to own but not without it's headaches! Depending on your budget a lot of the C's will have done around the 100K mark now but this isn't to say they are no good. To be fair I think it is a case of "luck of the draw". I would only be concerned about modified C's if you are intending to keep the car as a future collectors' item, as a standard one will obviously be worth a lot more in time! If you know a decent mechanic who would check a potential purchase over then do it (or pay the AA £300 to do an extensive test!) Full service history is a plus but not necessarily if it is VW service history! Never jump in and buy the first car you see no matter how much you want to, take your time and look around, maybe travelling further than you would like, a beauty could be that extra few miles away. Good luck mate MB -
Dan_Storm thank you very much for your generous offer but apart from the slight flutter during idle its not too bad. I think I'm going to buy the one on ebay which VW say is around the same money as the 462 (£300+VAT) but it is for the older VR6 (older chassis No) But they also say that the Golf VR6 2.8 also uses the same MAF as the C (462). So going on that I reckon they are all the same! Only the multiplug may be different? Unfortunately VW have stopped selling recon's as of this year which were £70. Just my luck! Thanks again Dan MB
-
Well those are my thoughts too, the one on ebay is being sold as a VW VR6 MAF but the seller has also said "It will fit certain models of VW Corrado VR6 '91-'96". Surely all models, unless there were differences between them? The one on ebay is selling at £69, but this is a bargain as the stealers want about £350+VAT !! I might risk it, buy it and see what happens Cheers people MB

Choosing to clean any easily accessible parts that could be causing my performance drop I started on the MAF sensor, after cleaning I decided it would be a good idea to gently dry the wire with some kitchen roll only to realise I had snapped off part of the wire! Plugging in VAG-COM reported a MAF fault (open or short B+ intermittent). What a joke, I didn't know the wire was the most brittle material known to man! I have seen a MAF sensor on ebay very cheap (P/N 021 906 461) but mine is 462, will it work? If not apart from the slight pull here and there can I put up with this until I decide which bank to rob or will something more serious develop? And I apologise the the M reg C I spotted on the A3 south bound, if I came across unfriendly now you know why, sorry. I am trying to just laugh it off as a foolish act but I can't therefore I'm now going to have a large Jack Daniels and hope the MAF was the problem anyway! Cheers for any input MB

If you are talking about the "Gunson" range then yes apparently they will work, well so says a auto-electrician I know. They probably don't state that it works on Corrado's because like so many other people they haven't heard of them!!
