What coolant and bleeding tips please
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
They still have the ratio's on the back, just need to peel back the rear label, it even has pictures for thickies like me....lol Stormy is all full of coolant now, one little weep of coolant on the top rad elbow so just waiting for a new o ring from heritage before I give it a full test. Btw, how expensive is G13, £11 a tub... Ouch.. Thanks for all the tips guys. Rog. -
£3.75, then add delivery @ £3.29, then VAT @ £1.41 equals a grand total of £8.45 for an 'O' ring seal. Rog.

Not sure if anyone from Heritage ever read anything on this forum but I hope they do. 99% of the time I'm more than happy to order stuff from Heritage, yes sometimes some bits can be cheaper from the bay of e however I still prefer to get my parts from them as I feel I am dealing with enthusiasts with a real desire to see older VW's kept on the road. But.... £3.29 to post an O ring is taking the p!ss, and that's not even next day delivery... Come on Heritage, that seal could have been posted for the price of a first class stamp, stop being greedy... Rog.

Starting problem has returned. Video inc

Rob, try leaving the ign on for a few sets before stating and see if that mates a difference. Failing that I have a fuel pump relay with a push button over ride switch, you are more than welcome to borrow it to see if it solves your problem. Also, check your fuel lines, I checked mine and the supply line was leaking at the pump. BTW, sounds really sweet once it's running. Rog. -
Mk3 motor will fit, that's what I have in mine, tbh I think they are better than the OE motor, my roof would pop up but wouldn't open although I could wind it back by hand, mk3 motor sorted it out. Rog.

What coolant and bleeding tips please
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
What's the total capacity fellas? I assume you mix the G13 with water and not chuck it in neat. Rog. -
Evening all. I've that the cooling system to pieces due to a cracked crack pipe, also got a new rad fitted. So tomorrow is coolant day, what coolant I need? I've read somewhere that G2 is the correct stuff. Also, any tips on bleeding the system. Rog.

Adjustable water pump pliers are my weapon of choice, hence why I now have a black thumb nail...lol For info, from experience the VW spring clips are a lot stronger than Honda ones, just something to maybe bear in mind when buying aftermarket clips. Rog.

Rob, I've got a compressor that you are more then welcome to borrow, I'll even deliver it if you put the kettle on...lol Rog.

Oil cooler mounting (upside down, on its side)
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
Thats what I'm going to do Kev, the VW owners manual says don't even begin to worry until 140 and like you say modern oils are far better at handling heat that the stuff that was available 20 years ago. Also, I've got a new rad and have flushed all the pipes and block through so that should improve my cooling. Rog. -
Gotta love this forum, 2 hours in and I have an answer, awesome. Rog.

Cheers guys, so it looks like its for AC then and I can simply tuck it away somewhere. I was worried I've disconnected it but I can't find anywhere it would go. Rog.

Yes mate, highest I've seen is 124. Rog. -
Evening chums, I've got the front in bits and cant work out where this wire goes. It's the one hanging over the sub-frame, single wire with a white plug on it, yellow wire with a black stripe. Many thanks. Rog.

Oil cooler mounting (upside down, on its side)
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
Since I've got the front apart I did a little test this afternoon, suspended the oil temp sender in a cup of hot water, it was surprisingly accurate. So, I guess I'm seeing real temps of 110-120 on a regular basis, anything to worry about?? Rog. -
Oil cooler mounting (upside down, on its side)
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
Yes Kev, I was still seeing oil temps over 100 even with the 19 row mocal, it's got a themostat sandwich plate so doesn't flow until over 80 so I can't see it over cooling. Think I'll run it without the extra cooler and see how it goes. Rog. -

What a bloody idiot... just realised I've got a spare engine sat in my garage... I've just checked and it has the OE cooler still attached..I'll simply use that.. Cheers for the heads up Sean and the kind offer. Rog. -
Oil cooler mounting (upside down, on its side)

I think I might, i'm sure the new rad and a good wash out should improve the cooling, only problem I have is I dont have the original oil cooler cover. Rog. -
Oil cooler mounting (upside down, on its side)
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
Well I've had a quick look round the inter web and there seems there is no reason why I can't run this cooler upside down so I've decided to mount it under the slam panel. Rog. -
I'm thinking that either, the alarm has been wired incorrectly and is cutting the supply to the ecu, the ecu itself is buggered, or another wiring issue. I had a quick look at the wiring diagrams and appears that the ecu powers up the dash warning lights so maybe the problem lies there. Maybe pull the ecu plug and have a look. Rog.

Why I chose it: "I wanted a classic that wasn't going to be too much work" Ha ha, obviously never actually owned a Rado then......lol Rog.

Coolant leak.. Update, broken crack pipe
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
Bugger, forgot you are breaking a VR... cheers for the offer mate but I've paid now. Rog. -
Hi all, As some of you know I'm currently sorting out a few cooling issues with 'Stormy' So, while I have the front off I thought I would sort out the oil cooler. I'm thinking I may move it to a different location so it gets better airflow, currently it sit in-line with the number plate. So I'm thinking either move it up which would mean mounting it upside down or move it to the side which would mean mounting it sideways. Would there be a problem with upside down or side mounting?? I'm thinking possible air locks etc. Or should I just leave it where it is. Rog.

Coolant leak.. Update, broken crack pipe
Roger Chatfield replied to Roger Chatfield's topic in Engine Bay
Little update, phoned the rad man today and he says my rad is 90% blocked and I need a new one, he has quoted £125 plus the vat.... errr.. no thanks.... managed to find one on ebay for £70 with a years warranty, also got a new rad switch for £8. Managed to get a few things done during my break at work last night. Fan frame stripped of fans and shrouds ready for a wire brush and some lovely hammerite. Got a few bits through the parts washer. before.. After.. There is definitely a small oil leak somewhere on the mocal oil cooler, I'm not sure if its the hoses, the fittings or the actual cooler so as it was a bit of a bodge when I fitted it I've decided to bite the bullet and buy new Jic 10 fitting and 5/8 piping, the increased bore of the pipe should aid the cooling a bit and hopefully it'll be leak free. Rog. -
Dave, I'm after a set for a VR if possible please. Many thanks Rog.
