Had an early day today so i got on with looking at the starting problem again . Ive checked for fuel at the rail again and made sure i have a spark . Both are fine . Im doing the compression test at the weekend , but unsure how to check flow rate on injectors , i had a look on the web and it looks like you need special tools to do it ?. Just to recap as im still at a total loss . I have checked the coil , new ht leads , new dizzy , new crank sensor , cleaned all connections ecu ect . I have fuel delivery and have a spark . Can anyone come up with any other things to check please . I just dont know what to do now !

Thanks Matt , Sean . I glad I'm getting it sorn this year , as when it's taxed I never do those sort of jobs and they end up getting left .

Every car will be different i normaly leave mine running for 10 minutes before driving , its warmed up then and the oil has rached the tappets . Normal temp is around 75 degrees . Rob

Just reread your post , sorry mate i thought you meant the fuel line by the air filter as i comes up to the rail , mine was rubbing on the line and put a hole in it . When you say by the fuel filter is it the hardline you are talking about ? Edit my brains not working ! .You should only need a new length of fuel pipe and a connector mate and i remember now i did have a leak there too .Available from halfords and the like .

Have not updated this for a while .Mot and tax are due in october and november , but with the problems im having with it not starting at the moment ,not to mention the nights drawing in and the rain ,it looks like im going to sorn it for the winter . So the winter jobs are piling up already . I need to sort out the non starting first . Then the interior is coming out because of the squeaks and rattles ,it drives me nuts !,so i will be refixing with plenty of foam and new fixings . While thats out i can fit the handbrake tunnel kit i have .I also have new door handle kits to put on . I also need to have a look at the central locking as when you press the fob to open the locks ,it keeps locking itself . I picked up a powder coated arm that the wiper blades fit to , and a powder coated heat protector that goes over the abs pump . Ive fitted the new black ht leads which blend in nice with the engine bay plastics .Also ive nearly finished re rapping all the wiring . Ive taken a few pics of how she is looking at the moment . I had a leak in the same place sean ,least its an easy fix . As for the lights , thats crap really mate . Rob Edit , not what you said is crap !, i meant the way they were packaged and delivered .

If you dont have a spark , you need to work back from the plugs , by this i mean checking the leads , then the coil pack ,i presume you have a coil pack and not a dizzy cap as its a 93 . Also check the battery terminals and earth fixings . You will need help with some of this as you need a multi meter to check voltages .I am in the same boat as you right now ! Edit i would also connect the car up to a vagcom .

Ok , you need to remove a spark plug , connect the lead back on to the plug , put on a rubber glove for safety . Hold the lead and make sure the plug is touching the block , get someone to crank the engine , you should see a spark at the plug .

As above , use the search to get ideas of what could be wrong . The first port of call is , do you have a spark , do you have fuel ? Rob

I have replaced the filter today and checked the fuel is pumping from the pump . Still no joy , i will be doing other tests that people have advised me to do ,at the weekend . Mawrick you have a pm . Thanks for everyones help so far . Rob

Yeah it's worth checking Sean , tax has run out now so it will be sorn , so I have time on my hands . Nothing worse than it being taxed and you can't drive it ! Rob

Well after a few weeks , the problem has returned rearing its ugly head . I started it this morning and left it to warm up ,it was spluttery on start up, when i got in the car it stalled and then it just turned over and didnt fire .Im going to see if i have fuel at the pump by disconnecting the fuel line to it and cranking it ,it should spurt fuel , also got a new filter from tps today . If i still cant solve it im going to throw a cover over it and walk away !. A mechanic said i doubt the injectors a blocked , other than low crompresion which i doubt as well as when it runs it pulls like a train and drives lovely .Nothing worse than an intermitant problem is there ?!!I could go out sunday morning to do the checks and it could fire up which means i cant find the problem . Nice to see the problem sorted ,I see volkscraft helped out , do you know matt well , only on more than three occasions I've been recommended to him and he wouldn't touch my car !, saying it was to old . matt the bug is coming to get you .

Make sure if you get one from 93 onwards you get the sender as well , as the late pump is different . The early sender does not fit later pumps . I found this when I ordered a new Bosch pump , when I went to connect my sender it would not fit . Just a pointer for you .

The fuel pipe will be 8mm in size , I used the original spring clamp when I renewed the hoses , if yours are a bit sketchy or you need new ones , they will be available from where ever you get the pipe from . Rob
