Hey, Been wanting to get round to doing a thread about my build so far but have taken ages getting round to it so here goes. Haven't had the best of luck with her so far, started a thread in the new members bit about it being a total lemon but i'm finally starting to get my confidence in her back. Had what seems like a massive amount of work done on her and still feels like i've only sratched the surface, giving me so much respect for anyone who's fully refurbished or built a show car, mental amounts of work, lol. anyway, the goal has always been to build her back to how she would of driven in 1994, but with some fairly major comprimises made with regard to styling. essential i've always loved that low, clean, staggered phat wheelskind of look, i think euro is the correct term:shrug: I know it'll probably mess up, to a degree that fabled handeling, but it'll still drive great, with loads of grip and in my eyes the comprimises are worth it for how it looks...eventually. so here's what i've had done so far: (all parts are genuine volkswagen parts if not otherwise stated....) powdercoated front subrame driveshafts, front hubs shotblasted and painted new wheel bairings front and back new front wishbones new topmounts and bearings front and back new Brembo disks all round greenstuff pads goodridge braided lines all round droplinks, balljoints, track rod ends and every bolt clip and bracket replaced vibratech solid front, fast road rear and gearbox mount overhauled engine, sourced 2.8 VR from stealth racing, has had new chains, tensioners, head rebuild, new headgasket, new clutch and all the other internal sensors replaced. Only had 70, 000 miles on before work, pulls really sweet. every coolent sensor changed including the black box by the expansion tank new heater matrix fixed sunroof retrimmed headling with my mates for £30's worth of black felt and some spray glue, sprayed all switches, casings and visors black as well, looks really good if i do say so myself, lol! had a BMC CDA fitted Magnecor leads(one of which i broke and haven't got round to replacing, tool.) Samco coolent hoses new alternator, waterpump, radiator, coilpack oh the Keskin KT1's, love them, just need her a tad lower to look spon on...arch work required... oh yeah, rear beam dropped, new bushes fitted, not sprayed yet, bit of a drama involving me shotblasting and spraying a beam that turned out to be the wrong one... new coppper lines at the back new front splitter and i think that's it for now, probably some stuff i forgot, anyway seats are waiting to go in, need rear bench trimmed and bodywork done first. Big thanks to a few guy's on here who have helped me with parts, lilfuzzer is one i forget the other and recently someone who is saved in my phone as Dave ECU came to the rescue after a multitude of issues were traced to a faulty ecu. got the car running awesome. and on a broader note found this website to be invaluable, learnt so much just from reading posts, and also learnt my problems are not new ones, lol! So thats it, there's some photo's below, on the girlfriends iphone so there not the best. any comments would be sweet. also anybody got or know of anybody selling a supercharger or obd2 setup let i know, laters guys. regards, max

We'll its been in the garage for nearly two weeks now, always had a misfire and other issues, then stopped running completly. they took four ecu's from ther local breakers three didn't work at all, one for a late golf vr6 got it running but the ecu was for an automatic so there were horrid flat spots and such. so seems that it was the problem, but i'll be damned if i'm paying for one new. You said yours has been re-mapped though, sure it'll work on my engine. its a 2.8 rebuilt by stealth, also got bmc cda and magnacor leads if that makes a difference. went for the 2.8 as i'm looking to supercharge it begging of next year. i'll pay today mate as i'm desperate to get her up and running, regards, max.

Thanks for the advice bud, clears things up. I looked at the turbo route, but with teh money i've got and the fact i'd like to do as much myself as possible the charger seemed much more realistic. I'm not really looking for mega numbers, just a nice wedge of usable power, and try and improve the sluggish feeling below 3,500rpm, 240-250 would be superb. also regarding the internals an head, etc. are these going to need replacing? lilfuzzer, the sills are looking dapper mate, got the headlining and sunroof done as well, looks the bollox with the new pillars and all, i'll try and get some photo's up in another thread! anyway, cheers guys, max

Hey, The issues with cooling, oil temperatures and misfire just seem to keep coming, I fix one thing, something else goes, etc. It seems endless, so i've decided to stop patching and sort it. I've alway's had big plans for the C, and have been ammassing bits toward restoring her. Now here's the question, I've just bought a 2.8 AAA golf Vr6 engine and gearbox, no auxillaries(sp) I think, but i've replaced most of them on my current anyway so i'll just swap them over. Now I've decided to go with the supercharger as it would work out a far cheaper alternative to a rebore 2.9 N/A route which would cost mega money. The engines got 96, 000 miles or something on it so i was wondering what i should do to ensure it's up to the charger, thinking rings, chains, tensioners, head re-build, anything i've missed? no real rush as the cars drivable, just, looking to get something done every month. Also regarding the supercharger itself, my understanding from other posts is that the Z-engineering one is good, but limited and only available second hand, whilst the, is it rotex v1/v2 are really good with adjustable pulleys, is this correct? looking to get it all done for under £2,000 as i'll be fitting the engine and hopefully charger myself, is this realistic? Any help or info would be wicked, Cheers, Max,

Read through that thread but seemed to be the reverse of what i have, their issues seemed to be prevelant during cold start, getting better as the temperaure increases. mine seems fine during cold start, the misfire seems to start as the engine warms up. also struggels to start when warm, wheras cold, no issues whatoever. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also am i likely to do any damage driving it with a misfire as its my ownly car and I need to get about untill I fix the problem. Its got a straight through s/s exhaust, so no cat to worry about? regards, max,

Hey guys, Only been a member for a while, and have used the search but couldn't find anything specific to my issue, so thought one of you might be able to help. Being close to pay day, money's a tad tight and I stupidly ran my car in or around red for a couple of days. well its developed a pretty appalling missfire and was wondering if that might have something to do with it. I've sinse topped it up to quater of a tank but its still there, right through the revs. A little history: Its allready had a new coilpack, magnecor blue leads, plugs and full service about two months ago, so fuel filter is new. Coil was replaced because It had developed a bad missfire before, so did coil, leads and plugs and this solved the issue. untill now. Side notes: It has missfired before when the fuel gets low, however in the past filling it back up immediatly remedied this. Often if its warm it has to turn over quite a bit before it bangs into life Doesn't seem to missfire at all from cold, only when it warms up, so i was thinking possibly fuel related as my understanding is it runs rich during the warmup phase, is this correct? Anyway, any ideas or common problems to check would be great. Thanks, Max,

Hello there, Just thought i'd give you my limited advice being a new corrado owner myself. same as you, been into volkswagens for a while, owned three mk2 golfs before my Rado, and i love it. my main advice would be don't rush into buying one. have a really good shop about, i didn't and am paying for it now. however i'm sure there are a good number of really honest cars about. going for the 1.8/2.0 16v route seems like an excellent idea, should be able to get a tidy example for a grand and half maybe two if you shop around. might be worth looking at some with a few minor issues if your comfortable with the spanners or don't mind learning as you can use little problems to haggle on price. just make sure the base is good, strong engine, gearbox and shell, stuff like spoiler, sunroof, even fans not working can be fixed yourself so shouldn't put you off to much. Everyone goes on about the VR6, and i'm not going to lie the noise and power are awesome but a sorted 16v is plenty quick, and with the right exhaust i love the sound(friends got a mk2 16v, sounds awesome) Just be prepared that whichever one you buy will need stuff doing, its just inevitable, but trust me, owning one is brilliant, even with the headaches there a unique car, i've never owned anything that gets as many comments or makes you feel as good driving it, you won't regret it mate. Regards, Max,

Stonejag: Alright mate, sounds like you've had quite an eventful time of it as well. I love how everyone still seems very positive even with all the dramas and hurdles they seem to encounter, makes me think it'll all be worth it in the end..what was it stage 14, lol! haha, a very valid point mate, yet i'm sure if you were to frequent any DIY forum i'm sure you'll find a plethora of homeowners enthusiastically bitching and moaning about the state of their gutters and cursing the cowboy who had previousl bodged their boiler:scratch: Besides I wasn't really complaining(maybe a bit), just sharing my experience, having only ever owned old volkswagens, this corrado being the newest of the lot, i'm no stranger to issues, problems and down-right disasters, all part of the adventure, lol! Thanks again for all the encouragement though guys, picked up the new subframe at the weekend with the rear beam, feel really motivated to get cracking with it now. was thinking of putting some photo's up of the car so far, is it ok to do that on this thread??? Regards, Max, -

Haha, looks like i'm not on my own with this situation then, not sure if that's reasurring or not, lol. Appreciate the encouragement though guy's, but not to worry i'm not even angry or dejected with the car, almost feel a sense of stubborness and commitement, this car will not beat me. I couldn't agree mor ewith the comments about selling up, exactly like you said, no assurance i won't have to go through it all again. besides, everything that i (or the garage) has fixed so far has been fine sinse, like someone said, hopefully good for another 15+ years. Currently re-trimming the headlining in black polar fleece, as the sunroof had never works, bought new sunroof ubframe with new cables and thought as the headling is out might as well try and change all that horrible grubby grey for nice new black. (reading on here looks like its been done a fair few times, there goes me thinking i was being original, lol) she's getting there, but before a spray or anything like that i just want to get it mechanically perfect, go from ther. Anyway, thanks for all the replys people, seems to be a great forum look forward to spending some time here. Regards, Max P.s agree completely with whoever said about components breaking in series, in my limited experience it appears that replacing one component for new(ie, waterpump)just stresses the old componants finding weak areas and making them fail. seems to be true from what i've seen. -
Hey, Having previously owned three mk2 golfs none of which exceding 1.6l, the jump up for my fourth car was something i'd been looking forward to for a long time. So having just handed over 2,500 of my hard earned monies I was now the proud owner of a black VR6 with black leather interior and full vwsh, happy days. or so i thought. Alarm bells should of begun to ring on the way home as the temperature rose to 100 and the fans suddenly kicked into overdrive, sounding more like a jet engine. well the owner assured me that they were curved fans, much louder but also much more efficient than there flat-bladed counterparts, muggins here lapped it up, its a VR6, it runs hot, what's there to worry about...... Anyway, a quick snapshot of my corrado ownership in its first four months: first two weeks, develops horrible mis-fire, needs new coil, get new plugs and leads to go along with it. whilst in the garage they notice some tool has wired a direct feed from the fans to the alternator (alarm bells), meaning that as soon as the engine hits 70degrees the fans come on at stage 3, hench the rediculous noise.......curved blades my ass..... two days after getting it back, alternator packs up. twoish weeks later, low coolant light come on on my way to bristol volksfest, eats three litres there and back. new waterpump is needed, old one leaking. four days after getting that fitted, huge billowing clouds of steam, radiator has now got inch split. fit new radiator, on drive back from mates, two pipes at the front of engine blow, transfer pipe and oil cooler pipe garage told me. get them fitted, one week later, huge amount of steam pouring out of dash, vents, glove box, very wet carpets next morning. need new heater matrix, just by-passed it for now. Has in the past two weeks developed a slight knocking, grinding from the front end. In that time, I seriously wondered if it has ever had any new part bought for it in all of its 156,000 miles, just lots of services. Considered selling it and looking for another, but sinse i've owned it, it has always needed something buying to make it road worthy, and before i realised i was to financially comitted to even consider selling it. So. Its staying. and even with all the above i love it, the noise and power and looks of the thing, genuinly make it worth while. I've bought and fitted a set of fk highsport coilovers, keskin kt1's with 9 out back, getting the interior halfway finished, got the re-trimmed escort rs recaros waiting. Just got a new front sub-frame and rear beam blasted and static painted along with a set of 288mk3 golf fronts. ordered all the droplinks, balljoints bushes to rebuild both the front and rear end, so she's on her way to being back to her best. Even if i am in financial ruin. I think i'd be in relationship ruin as well if the missus had any idea how much 'that bloody car' had cost me recently. wow, long message, might of got a bit carried away, but wanted to let my eventful few months of corrado ownership be know. Regards, Max,

Cheers mate, I'm now looking at replacing the lot, front and back. Went to my local scrappy at the weekend, got a front subframe, and rear beam plus 288 mk4 golf front calipers and carriers. blokes a legend, he's going to get the whole lot shotblasted and re-painted with some static applied paint, used on plant machinery, meant to be well tough. 150quid for the bits and the same again for the shotblasting and painting, bargain i thought. Looks like I've got the wrong end of the stick then, r32 bushes are for the front, not rear axel. bugger. any upgraded rear bushes i can use without going polly, want to keep the rear steer as vw intended?? Going back a bit, do you think the plan of building up a new front end off the car is possible, all i need now is some front hubs and i think i've got the lot?? Thanks again for the reply mate, Regards, P.s mate I've thought about selling mine and buying a new one but i've allready thrown to much cash into it, i'd loose a fortune. In for the long haul now, at least it'll be another one saved, lol. Max,

Anybody got any advice??

Hey guys, Just registered to the forum, looks to be a wealth of knowledge, was wondering if i could use some of it? Just aquired a VR6 after three mk2 golfs and am loving th car. only issue is I've bought a bit of a lemon, exitement, ignorance and impatience being a dangerous mixture. After a painful episode with the cooling system, i'm now going to try to begin restoring the ar toward its former glory. The plan of attack has been somewhat forced by a new and increasingly worrying grinding/clunking noise coming from the front of the car when coasting. so. After a call to my local VW emporium i now have the following parts to go toward the rebuild. New lowerballjoints droplnks ARB bushes topmounts wishbones with bushes I'm looking to buy a subframe get it shotblasted and seamwelded then painted to build up the new front end as best i can off the car. The same with the rear beam. Then drop the old lot off the car. this will allow me(or the garage) to fully repair the underseal, and try to mend a bit of damage around the jacking points. Can you see any major problems with this plan? Other than the rear beam and bushes is there any other parts i should do at the same time? Oh also i think i read somewhere you can use R32 bushes to stiffen the rear beam slightly, is this true? Sorry for the long post, hope you can help. Regards, Max,
